BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that the prevalence of psychiatric disorders, particularly depression, is high among tuberculosis (TB) patients, and may adversely affect treatment compliance. A person suffering from TB can develop depression in due course of time owing to a number of factors, namely the long duration of treatment for TB, stigmatization faced by the patient due to the disease and lack of family support to name a few.
OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of depression and its correlates among TB patients enrolled at a Directly Observed Treatment Short-

BACKGROUND: Preventing active tuberculosis (TB) from developing in people with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is important for global TB control. Isoniazid (INH) for six to nine months has 60% to 90% protective efficacy, but the treatment period is long, liver toxicity is a problem, and completion rates outside trials are only around 50%. Rifampicin or rifamycin-combination treatments are shorter and may result in higher completion rates.
OBJECTIVES: To compare the effects of rifampicin monotherapy or rifamycin-combination therapy versus INH monotherapy for preventing active TB in HIV-n

OBJECTIVE: To describe trends and highlight epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of childhood tuberculosis (TB) in the United States.
METHODS: All verified TB cases reported to the national TB surveillance system from 1993 to 2001 were included. A child was defined as a person younger than 15 years.
RESULTS: A total of 11,480 childhood TB cases were reported. Case rates (TB cases/100,000 population) in all children declined from 2.9 (n = 1663) in 1993 to 1.5 (n = 931) in 2001. Among children, those who were younger than 5 years had the highest rate. California, Texas, and New York acco

PURPOSE: The success of any specific occlusion regimen is limited by the level of concordance, which is difficult to measure accurately in patching treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate prospectively the concordance rate of a group of children with strabismic and/or anisometropic amblyopia using a schematic diary based on completing 'smiley' images, filled in by the child under parental supervision, and to assess the effect of correlates such as initial visual acuity, age, and total and daily occlusion time on concordance.
METHODS: We recruited 51 amblyopic children aged 13 mont

Preventing tuberculosis (TB) by treating latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is a cornerstone of the U.S. strategy for TB elimination. Three randomized controlled trials have shown that a new combination regimen of isoniazid (INH) and rifapentine (RPT) administered weekly for 12 weeks as directly observed therapy (DOT) is as effective for preventing TB as other regimens and is more likely to be completed than the U.S. standard regimen of 9 months of INH daily without DOT. This report provides CDC recommendations for using the INH-RPT regimen. The new regimen is recommended as an

BACKGROUND: No large studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of a 6-month regimen for all forms of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB).
METHODS: Retrospective, observational analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of a 6-month treatment regimen (2HRZE/4H3R3) for all patients diagnosed with EPTB in Caracas, Venezuela, from 1 January 1998 to 31 December 2000, using direct observation.
RESULTS: Of 679 patients enrolled, 101 (14.9%) had AIDS. In 83.2% the diagnosis was based on microbiological, histological or genetic amplification information. Of 612 (90.1%) patients who took more than 90% o

INTRODUCTION: Ethiopia has a growing private health sector. In recent years, the directly observed treatment short course (DOTS) strategy was initiated in selected private health facilities in the country. The objective of the present study was to assess knowledge and practice of private practitioners in tuberculosis (TB) control in Amhara Region, Ethiopia.
METHODOLOGY: An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 112 private practitioners selected from all private health facilities in the region. The study was conducted between May and August 2008 and data was collected usi

Tuberculosis (TB) is a major worldwide health problem, particularly in India, where it accounts for a quarter of infections. Adherence to the Directly Observed Treatment, Short-Course (DOTS), which is necessary for TB treatment, is difficult in resource-limited circumstances. This study addressed the knowledge, attitude, and perceived barriers related to TB and DOTS adherence among patients and caregivers. A cross-sectional survey was undertaken at the selected TB clinics between November 2023 and March 2024. Purposive sample yielded 180 patients and 217 caregivers. Data were obtained using va

IMPORTANCE: Suboptimal adherence to oral mercaptopurine treatment in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) increases the risk of relapse. A frequently expressed barrier to adherence is forgetfulness, which is often overcome by parental vigilance.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a multicomponent intervention, compared with education alone, will result in a higher proportion of patients with ALL who have mercaptopurine adherence rates 95% or higher, for all study participants and among patients younger than 12 years and vs those aged 12 years and older.

BACKGROUND: WHO's directly observed therapy (DOT) strategy for tuberculosis (TB) treatment depends upon a well-organized healthcare system. This study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of self-administered drug intake supported by a family member versus in-clinic DOT.
METHODS: This open-label, nationally-representative stratified cluster randomized controlled non-inferiority trial with two parallel equal arms involved drug-susceptible pulmonary TB patients in the continuation treatment phase. We randomly assigned outpatient-TB-centres (52 clusters) to intervention and control arms. The int

BACKGROUND: Depression is highly prevalent among HIV-infected injection drug users (IDUs) and has been associated with poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy and increased morbidity and mortality. Factors associated with changes in depressive symptoms among this group receiving antiretroviral treatment that have not been extensively evaluated.
METHODS: This post-hoc analysis of prospective clinical trial analyzes the factors associated with changes in depressive symptomatology using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies of Depression Scale (CES-D) among HIV-infected IDUs enrolled in a prospe

Tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) programs are increasingly working together towards providing universal access to integrated TB and HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services. To monitor progress we need to measure the delivery and impact of these services; however, the lack of investment in monitoring and evaluation and the added complexity of sharing data between two vertical programs, makes monitoring and evaluation of collaborative TB-HIV activities especially challenging. We describe the global system to record, report and analyse data on collaborative TB

SETTING AND METHODS: In Orel, high tuberculosis (TB) case fatality rates have persisted despite successful implementation of the World Health Organization (WHO) global TB control strategy. We conducted a case control study to identify risk factors for mortality among Orel TB patients reported from October 1999 through June 2001. Cases were patients who died within 8 months of treatment initiation. We analyzed data abstracted from medical records using conditional logistic regression.
RESULTS: Over the 21-month period, 63/1069 (5.9%) TB patients overall and 45/521 (8.6%) sputum smear-positive

The Saharia tribe of Madhya Pradesh has a very high tuberculosis (TB) burden. However, there is no report of adverse drug reaction (ADR) available in patients receiving anti-TB chemotherapy in the community. Reporting and monitoring of ADRs among TB patients is still rare in marginalized communities. An observational prospective study was performed from November 2019 to June 2020 to assess the patterns of ADRs in 250 Saharia TB patients, who were prescribed Category-I daily DOTS (HRZE) by the physician. Both male and female participants equally experienced ADR during the treatment, but relativ
