We report a case of human pulmonary dirofilariasis in a 31-year-old man residing in the Aigion (Pelopennesus) Greece. The patient was hospitalized for fever of unknown cause. The chest x-ray showed a coin lesion in the left lung. Lung cancer was suspected and lobectomy was performed. Pathology reported presence of a nematode in an infarcted nodule. Its morphology enabled the diagnosis of an immature female Dirofaria repens. Twenty-two cases of human subcutaneous or subconjunctival human dirofilariasis have been reported. The present case is the first located in the lung.

PURPOSE: Human dirofilariasis cases have increased in Europe for the last few decades. We document an autochthonous case of dirofilariasis infection in the subconjunctival space of a 60-year-old Spanish man.
OBSERVATIONS: The patient presented with pain in his right eye, which was diagnosed as epi-scleritis. In spite of the treatment administered, no improvement was reported. An external exam showed conjunctival congestion on the temporal part of the right eye bulbar conjunctiva. The anterior chamber showed no flare or cells in both eyes and dilated fundus exam was normal. Nevertheless, a lon

The diagnosis of human dirofilariasis is difficult because of the absence of laboratory tests. Up-to-date ultrasound devices have a high resolution that can visualize this subcutaneous helminth. Ultrasonography can improve the timely diagnosis of this helminthism, as demonstrated by the given clinical example.

Dirofilariasis is caused by filarial nematodes (roundworms) of the genus Dirofilaria Dirofilariasis of the oral mucosa is very rare. Herein, we report a case of a 79-year-old man who had a slowly growing infiltrative mass in the right buccal space. Histopathologic examination showed an inflammatory infiltrate with eosinophilia, histiocytes, and small organisms (0.2-0.3 mm). Digital images were sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which identified the parasite as a nematode in the genus Dirofilaria It appeared to be dead and degenerating, but external, fine longitudinal cutic

Xenomonitoring (detection of filarial larvae in mosquitoes) of vectors of dirofilariasis was performed in 2009—2013 in vectors collected in southern and northwestern regions of the Russian Federation. In Rostov, Astrakhan, Krasnodar, and Novgorod Provinces and in the Republic of Adygea the degree of infestation of mosquito larvae with Dirofilaria constituted 1.8 ± 0.2 % (66/3590), 0.9 ± 0.4 % (4/470), 0.8 ± 0.2 % (11/1382), 0.7 ± 0.4 % (3/438), and 0.5 ± 0.5 % (1/190), respectively. Total degree of infestation of mosquitoes with larvae of Dirofilaria spp. constituted 2.3 ± 0.3 % (45/1936), 1.9

Human dirofilariasis is an unusual zoonotic infection (transmitted from animals to humans) presenting as a subcutaneous nodule. Occasionally it involves the eye. The parasite is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. Presentation in infants is extremely rare. A rare case of subcutaneous dirofilariasis of the eyelid in a 7-month-old infant is reported.

Human pulmonary dirofilariasis (HPD) is caused by the transmission of infective third stage larvae of the canine heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis, during blood-feeding by several species of infected mosquitoes. Since humans are incidental hosts and cannot support the parasite's life cycle, infective larvae die after migrating to the pulmonary vascular bed, where an initial subclinical inflammatory reaction is typically followed by a single pulmonary granuloma. The resulting nodular granuloma is described radiographically as a "coin lesion" that resembles a neoplastic lesion, which must be ruled

A 22-year-old male U.S. Navy airman with new nontender subcutaneous, 4-cm mass inferior to the right anterior costal margin was sent for routine biopsy. Sudden appearance of axillary lymph nodes prompted immediate excisional biopsy of the primary mass. Pathological evaluation was initially read as Onchocerca volvulus, the filarial nematode classically responsible for river blindness. Subsequent evaluation by Armed Forces Institute of Pathology resulted in a change of diagnosis to Dirofilaria species, not pathogenic in humans. The author discusses the literature of Dirofilaria infestations in h

A 22-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of an abnormal shadow in her chest X-ray found on a medical examination. Chest CT showed a 16-mm nodule with cavity formation in the left lung. We did not reach a definitive diagnosis by blood test and bronchoscopy. Because we could not exclude the possibility of a malignancy, lung partial resection was performed by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for treatment and diagnosis. We recognized the Dirofilaria immitis by pathological diagnosis and we diagnosed this case as pulmonary dirofilariasis. It seemed to be a valuable case that th

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary dirofilariasis is an uncommon entity. Known as a zoonotic disease it can affect humans as a secondary host. A pseudo-tumor of the lung called "coin" lesion is usually detected while performing a chest X-ray for another reason.
OBSERVATION: We present a case of pulmonary dirofilariasis due to Dirofilaria sp. in a 72 year old immunocompetent patient who underwent surgery for suspicion of a neoplasm.
DISCUSSION: Human pulmonary dirofilariasis should be evoked in asymptomatic patient from endemic area of canine dirofilariasis presenting with a pseudo tumor of the lung.

A new case of human dirofilariasis associated with Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens (Nematoda, Filarioidea, Onchocercidae) located in the spermatic cord is reported in a 71-year-old man from the province of Campobasso (Central Italy). When clinical signs pointed to a testicular tumor, a monolateral orchifuniculectomy was performed. According to the scientific literature, this case appears to be exceptional in its location, being only the eighth such case recorded in the world until now. The nematode, as well as the presence of vectors suitable for its transmission, had already been observed bot

A 73-year-old woman had a 4-year history of lung fibrosis from collagen vascular disease. She presented with a complaint of dry cough. A chest radiograph showed a 2-cm solitary pulmonary nodule with a small cavity in the right lower lobe. Preoperatively, we performed computed tomography of the chest and measured tumor markers. Video-assisted thoracotomy was performed because we could not rule out lung cancer. Pathologic analysis confirmed the presence of a granuloma with Dirofilaria immitis. In Japan, the incidence of human dirofilariasis has steadily increased and must be considered in the wo

BACKGROUND: Human pulmonary dirofilariasis (HPD) is rare in Hungary, and it stems from Dirofilaria immitis, mainly transmitted through mosquito bites, with dogs as primary hosts. Despite its prevalence in veterinary settings, human cases are infrequent. Historically, Mediterranean countries report most HPD cases, but sporadic cases occur in temperate European regions. Radiologically, HPD often manifests in a non-specific manner, resembling pulmonary neoplasms, leading to unnecessary surgery and patient distress.
METHODS: This study presents a notable case series from Hungary, encompassing a 1

OBJECTIVE: To present case of a child with epididymal dirofil-ariasis.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION: An 11-year-old boy was admitted to the Clinic of Pediatric Urology for elective surgery treatment of epididymal cyst on the left side. After removal, the cyst was sent for histological examination. Microscopic examination of the histological slides revealed cross-sections of a nematode belonging to Dirofilaria spp., differentiated morphologically as D. repens. After surgery, the patient recovered completely.
CONCLUSIONS: In most parts around the world, dirofilariasis is a rare and n

Ocular dirofilariasis is a zoonotic filariasis caused by nematode worm,Dirofilaria. We present a case of dirofilariasis affecting the upper eyelid in a 2-year-old child presenting as an acutely inflammed cyst, from southern Indian state of Kerala. Live adult worm was surgically removed and confirmed to be Dirofilaria repens. Live worm showing continuous movement was seen on the pre-operative high-resolution ultrasound. Ultrasound can be helpful in pre-operative identification of live worm.Imaging findings reported in literature are very few. We describe the clinical, ultrasound, and magnetic r

INTRODUCTION: Dirofilariasis due to Dirofilaria repens is a parasitic disease affecting domestic animals and transmitted to man by mosquito bites. Human infestation is rare and involves benign subcutaneous and ocular manifestations. The diagnosis is made by excisional biopsy, which is also the sole recommended treatment. There are few reports of human infection in Tunisia.
CASE REPORT: We report herein the second case of conjunctival dirofilariasis in a 21-year-old woman residing in Tunis (Tunisia). The clinical presentation evoked orbital cellulites. Clinical and radiological investigations

BACKGROUND: Dirofilariasis, the disease caused by Dirofilaria spp., and in particular by Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens in canines, occurs frequently in canids and felids, and occasionally in humans, in temperate, sub-tropical and tropical regions globally. Although highly effective, safe and convenient preventive medicines have been available for the treatment of dirofilariasis for the past three decades, the disease remains a major veterinary and public health concern in endemic areas. The insect vectors, host-parasite relationships and interactions of Dirofilaria spp. have recei
