An evaluation of medical students' views on the introduction of a community placement and its impact on their understanding of patients with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: In 2011 the third-year community course at the University of Liverpool was reorganised to have an emphasis on disability. The aim was to increase students' understanding of some of the issues surrounding disability and what this means to individual patients. The rotation consists of six full-day, small-group tutorial sessions, five days at a GP placement where, amongst other things, they have to perform a 'long case' clerking of two patients with disabilities, communication skills sessions and visits to community disability centres. METHODS: Five focus groups were arranged with a

Responsiveness of the disability of the arm, shoulder, and hand (DASH) and patient-rated wrist/hand evaluation (PRWHE) in evaluating change after hand therapy.

A hand therapy clinic used a systematic process to select an outcome tool for routine use. After a literature review of available instruments, the choice had been narrowed to two instruments: the Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) and the Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PWRE). The PRWE was modified to attribute to the hand/wrist. A cohort of 60 patients (36 hand problems, 24 wrist problems) completed a DASH and PRWHE at their initial clinic visit and three months later. Standardized response means (SRMs) and effect sizes indicated a large treatment effect. The PRWHE had slightly

Predicting Clinical Improvement in Chronic Low Back Pain Using Exercise-Induced IVIM Perfusion: Threshold Evaluation and Disability-Dependent Effects.

Chronic low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of disability worldwide, yet responses to exercise-based rehabilitation vary substantially and remain not well characterized. Impaired activation of the lumbar paraspinal muscles has been proposed as a mechanism limiting rehabilitation treatment response. Intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) magnetic resonance imaging assesses muscle diffusion and perfusion after exercise, offering physiological markers of dynamic function. In a previous pilot study, we reported that acute exercise-induced IVIM responses were reduced in individuals with LBP and t

Evaluation of a disability-inclusive ultra-poor graduation programme in Bangladesh: study protocol for a cluster-randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: There remains a lack of evidence on which livelihoods interventions are effective for persons with disabilities, particularly given the fact that the impact of interventions varies according to contextual factors. The disability-inclusive ultra-poor graduation (DIUPG) programme is an adaptation of the ultra-poor graduation programme (UPG), designed to tackle extreme poverty among persons with disabilities. The DIUPG programme has been previously evaluated in Uganda and found to have successfully improved household consumption, amidst the challenges of COVID-19 and funding cuts. The

Developing and Implementing a Web-Based Branching Logic Survey to Support Psychiatric Crisis Evaluations of Individuals With Developmental Disabilities: Qualitative Study and Evaluation of Validity.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with developmental disabilities (DD) experience increased rates of emotional and behavioral crises that necessitate assessment and intervention. Psychiatric disorders can contribute to crises; however, screening measures developed for the general population are inadequate for those with DD. Medical conditions can exacerbate crises and merit evaluation. Screening tools using checklist formats, even when designed for DD, are too limited in depth and scope for crisis assessments. The Sources of Distress survey implements a web-based branching logic format to screen for com
