Correlates of disablement in polyarticular juvenile chronic arthritis--a cross-sectional study.

To assess the impact of disease on the functional outcome of patients with polyarticular juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA), the relationship between impairments and functional limitations was studied. Therefore, variables from the impairment domain were correlated with variables of the functional limitation domain and outcome variables were analysed for differences as a result of inflammatory disease, rheumatoid factor (RF), disease duration and age at onset. Twenty-three patients with polyarticular JCA were subjected to auxologic evaluation, a laboratory check, radiographic evaluation, joint c

Disadvantage as a measure of handicap: a paired sibling study of disabled adults in Lebanon.

In 1980 WHO defined disability as a functional limitation due to impairment, and handicap as the psychosocial disadvantage consequent to disability. This study was designed to investigate the advent of handicap in a group of adults physically disabled by poliomyelitis in childhood by comparing them to their age- and sex-matched siblings. An area survey was conducted in West Beirut and its Southern Suburb and 240 such disabled people and their siblings were identified and interviewed. Handicap was defined as disadvantage in six areas, namely, education, work, income, marital status, housing, an

Prevalence of reading disability in boys and girls. Results of the Connecticut Longitudinal Study.

We hypothesized that results of previous investigations indicating an increased prevalence of reading disability in boys compared with girls reflected a bias in subject selection. In an epidemiologic sample of 215 girls and 199 boys, we identified two groups of reading-disabled children: research identified and school identified. Results indicated no significant differences in the prevalence of reading disability in research-identified boys compared with research-identified girls in either second (17[8.7%] of 196 boys; 15[6.9%] of 216 girls) or third grade (18[9.0%] of 199 boys; 13[6.0%] of 21

Muscle strength and aerobic power--a study of lower-limb disabled males.

The relationship between arm strength and aerobic power (VO2 peak) was examined in 35 lower-limb disabled males. Equations related predicted VO2 peak to simple measurements of isokinetic and/or static strength. Covariance analysis (ANCOVA) showed that after allowance for level of habitual activity and lesion level there was a highly significant relationship between VO2 peak and simple strength measurements (greater for isokinetic than for static data). The findings suggest that in the wheelchair-bound the extent to which arm strength is developed has more impact upon cardiovascular performance

Individuals with intellectual disability and complex epilepsy: a case study of diagnostic overshadowing.

People with intellectual disability have a higher prevalence of epilepsy, care complexity, comorbidity and polypharmacy than the general population. These patients are often found to be on multiple medications without a clear rationale for ongoing prescriptions. Recent evidence has highlighted the ongoing exposure to avoidable health inequalities and premature death in this population group, in which medicines management can play an influential role. This article aims to identify practical interventions to mitigate the risk of diagnostic overshadowing and health inequalities in individuals wit

Intellectual disabilities and risk of dementia: A Korean population-based cohort study.

This retrospective cohort study assessed the risk of all-cause dementia, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and vascular dementia (VaD) in individuals with intellectual disabilities compared to those without. Using data from the Korean National Disability Registry and National Health Insurance Service, individuals over 40 who underwent health examinations in 2009 were followed until 2020. Cox proportional hazards models estimated hazard ratios (HRs) for dementia outcomes, adjusting for confounders. Over a mean 8-year follow-up, 161 dementia, 111 AD, and 22 VaD cases occurred among individuals with inte

Psychological flexibility and resilience in dizziness-related disability: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Dizziness is a highly prevalent and often disabling complaint that cannot always be explained by peripheral vestibular pathology alone. Psychological factors, particularly psychological flexibility and resilience, may play an important role in shaping symptom severity and disability, yet their combined contribution remains insufficiently explored. This study aimed to examine how psychological flexibility and resilience contribute to the clinical expression of dizziness-related disability. METHODS: Ninety-eight patients with dizziness (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, persiste
