A unique hospital physician disaster response system for a nonemployed medical staff.

Private hospitals with nonemployed, volunteer medical staffs face a special challenge in meeting the patient-care needs posed by a mass casualty incident (MCI). Although most disaster response systems focus on emergency department and trauma management, such systems often do not provide for the need to triage existing inpatients to create room for incoming casualties, for continuity of physician care for those patients, as well as for MCI victims in case of major disaster. Such systems must also provide a mechanism for ethical and appropriate rationing of limited resources during a MCI. Commun

Predictors of nurses' reporting for work at the time of epidemics and natural disasters; solutions for hospital surge capacity.

PURPOSE: To identify the predictors of nurses' presence at hospitals at the time of three types of disasters. DESIGN: This cross-sectional study was performed using a researcher-generated questionnaire. METHODS: This study was performed on 350 nurses of five public hospitals. Data was collected using a questionnaire in which the respondents were asked about their decisions on reporting for work in the event of three scenarios: epidemic of an unknown contagious respiratory disease, earthquake, and flood. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the data. FINDINGS: The four predictors

Disaster management ontology- an ontological approach to disaster management automation.

The geographical location of any region, as well as large-scale environmental changes caused by a variety of factors, invite a wide range of disasters. Floods, droughts, earthquakes, cyclones, landslides, tornadoes, and cloudbursts are all common natural disasters that destroy property and kill people. On average, 0.1% of the total deaths globally in the past decade have been due to natural disasters. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), a branch of the Ministry of Home Affairs, plays an important role in disaster management in India by taking responsibility for risk mitigation,

Association between resilience, social support, and institutional trust and post-traumatic stress disorder after natural disasters.

Disasters can cause significant personal and social distress and adversely affect mental health. Compared with research on the risk factors of post-disaster post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), limited studies have reported protective factors against PTSD. We investigated whether resilience, social support, and trust in government were associated with PTSD in disaster survivors, after adjustment for the perceived damage and demographic variables including sex, age, and economic status. We investigated 2311 disaster survivors, using data from the "Long-term survey on the change of life of Dis

Inclusive altruism born of suffering: the relationship between adversity and prosocial attitudes and behavior toward disadvantaged outgroups.

This article reports the results of 2 studies examining altruism born of suffering (E. Staub & J. R. Vollhardt, 2008). More specifically, we examined inclusive altruism born of suffering, which is directed toward members of disadvantaged outgroups. Drawing on and integrating clinical and social psychological theories, we hypothesized that individuals who had suffered from adverse life events would be more likely to help the outgroups in need than those who had not suffered. This was demonstrated for helpers who had experienced various forms of suffering (interpersonal and group-based harm, nat

Development of emergency food assistance design: a nutritionally balanced, culturally tailored and cost-effective strategy for flood mitigation.

Emergency food assistance forms an integral component of flood mitigation in Malaysia. A cross-sectional survey investigating emergency food assistance among 202 flood victims was conducted and alternative food assistance plan was developed using linear programming targeting post-disaster food requirement scenarios. From the study, the receipt of food aid was significantly associated with ethnicity, household income, residential area and evacuation into temporary shelters. Linear programming analysis identified nutritionally appropriate food assistance targeting mass feeding, emergency food ba

Impact of a natural disaster on a psychiatric inpatient population: clinical observations.

Natural disasters do not always lead to post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) for their victims, although stress-related symptoms are commonly reported as results of such disasters. The impact of a natural disaster on the treatment of a hospitalized psychiatric population has never been systematically evaluated. In the fall of 1986, severe river flooding caused evacuation of a 160-bed psychiatric facility. One hundred and twenty-one hospitalized patients were taken to nearby hospital facilities, and many were separated from their primary therapists, fellow patients or both. A mail survey two

Sarin poisoning on Tokyo subway.

On the day of the disaster, 641 victims were seen at St. Luke's International Hospital. Among those, five victims arrived with cardiopulmonary or respiratory arrest with marked miosis and extremely low serum cholinesterase values; two died and three recovered completely. In addition to these five critical patients, 106 patients, including four pregnant women, were hospitalized with symptoms of mild to moderate exposure. Other victims had only mild symptoms and were released after 6 hours of observation. Major signs and symptoms in victims were miosis, headache, dyspnea, nausea, ocular pain, bl

Long-Term Associations Between Disaster Experiences and Cardiometabolic Risk: A Natural Experiment From the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

We investigated the association between disaster experience and the cardiometabolic risk of survivors 2.5 years after disaster onset, adjusting for health information predating the disaster, using natural experiment data stemming from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. We used data from a cohort of adults aged 65 years or older in Iwanuma City, Japan, located 80 km (128 miles) west of the earthquake epicenter. The baseline survey was completed 7 months before the disaster, and the follow-up survey was performed among survivors approximately 2.5 years after the disaster. The surv

An Interprofessional Approach to Continuing Education With Mass Casualty Simulation: Planning and Execution.

Many natural and man-made disasters require the assistance from teams of health care professionals. Knowing that continuing education about disaster simulation training is essential to nursing students, nurses, and emergency first responders (e.g., emergency medical technicians, firefighters, police officers), a university in the northeastern United States planned and implemented an interprofessional mass casualty incident (MCI) disaster simulation using the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) management framework. The school of nursing and University Volunteer Ambulance Corps (UVAC)

Climate forecasts in disaster management: Red Cross flood operations in West Africa, 2008.

In 2008, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) used a seasonal forecast for West Africa for the first time to implement an Early Warning, Early Action strategy for enhanced flood preparedness and response. Interviews with disaster managers suggest that this approach improved their capacity and response. Relief supplies reached flood victims within days, as opposed to weeks in previous years, thereby preventing further loss of life, illness, and setbacks to livelihoods, as well as augmenting the efficiency of resource use. This case demonstrates the potenti

Arts as a vehicle for community building and post-disaster development.

Use of the arts in international aid is common in an ad hoc form, but it has not been systematically theorised or evaluated. The arts have the potential to be a culturally contextualised and sustainable intervention for adults and children in the aftermath of war or disaster. On the micro level, the arts are a method to enable the retrieval and reprocessing of traumatic memories that are often encoded in images rather than in words. On a macro level, they can help to reconstruct a group narrative of a disaster as well as mobilise people back into control of their lives. This paper researches a

[The Great East Japan earthquake and mid- and long-term prospect for mental health and welfare in Miyagi Prefecture].

About twenty-thousand persons were deceased or missing in the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. More than half of them belonged to Miyagi Prefecture. The entire coastal areas in Miyagi Prefecture fell victim to the disaster owing to tsunami damage. The damage in mental health system varied in areas both qualitatively and quantitatively ("patchy disparity"), to which uniform support cannot be applied. Such a disparity should be considered in the mid-and long-term prospect for mental health and welfare. The disaster exposed the fragility of the mental health and welfare in Japan as
