Dog overpopulation and burden of exposure to canine distemper virus and other pathogens on Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos.

Dog overpopulation and diseases are hazards to native island species and humans on the Galapagos. Vaccination and importation of dogs are prohibited on the Galapagos. Risk management of these hazards requires the use of science-based risk assessment and risk communication. The objectives of the study reported here were (i) to estimate the human:dog ratio and (ii) the prevalence of and identify exposure factors associated with positive antibody titers to canine distemper virus (CDV) and other pathogens, as well as infection with intestinal parasites in owned dogs on Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos

In vitro inhibition of canine distemper virus by flavonoids and phenolic acids: implications of structural differences for antiviral design.

Infection caused by canine distemper virus (CDV) is a highly contagious disease with high incidence and lethality in the canine population. Antiviral activity of flavonoids quercetin, morin, rutin and hesperidin, and phenolic cinnamic, trans-cinnamic and ferulic acids were evaluated in vitro against the CDV using the time of addition assay to determine which step of the viral replicative cycle was affected. All flavonoids displayed great viral inhibition when they were added at the times 0 (adsorption) and 1h (penetration) of the viral replicative cycle. Both quercetin and hesperidin presented

Genotypes of canine distemper virus determined by analysis of the hemagglutinin genes of recent isolates from dogs in Japan.

Canine distemper of domestic dogs is caused by canine distemper virus (CDV), a member of the morbilliviruses. It has been a highly contagious disease of great veterinary importance for centuries, but for the last several decades it has been controlled satisfactorily by modified live vaccines. In the 1990s, however, it was described that CDV strains genetically different from vaccine strains may have caused the disease in vaccinated dogs. The highest antigenic variation is found in the H protein. Therefore, in the present study, hemagglutinin (H) genes obtained from current vaccines and field i

Immunogenic evaluation of a recombinant rabies virus expressing canine distemper virus H gene and canine parvovirus VP2 gene.

In clinical practice, canine infectious diseases including rabies, canine distemper, and canine parvovirosis pose substantial health threats to canines. In this study, we constructed a recombinant rabies virus (RABV) rHEP-Flury(H+VP2) expressing the canine distemper virus (CDV) H gene and canine parvovirus (CPV) VP2 gene, and evaluated its growth characteristics and immunogenicity. The recombinant virus was generated by inserting the CDV H gene and CPV VP2 gene between the G and L genes of HEP-Flury strain. We found that the recombinant virus maintained high genetic stability after 20 consecut

EFFECTIVE ANTIBODY RESPONSE OF AFRICAN WILD DOGS (LYCAON PICTUS) TO CANINE DISTEMPER VACCINATION WITH A LIVE ATTENUATED VACCINE.

Vaccinating African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) against canine distemper virus (CDV) using live attenuated vaccines (LAV) has been controversial because of limitations in the vaccines' effectiveness and safety. However, CDV is a significant pathogen for African wild dogs, and CDV LAV are currently the only vaccines readily available on the African continent, making them a crucial tool for in situ conservation. There are few studies exploring immunogenicity of CDV LAV, and even less information pertaining to optimal vaccination protocols. This study reports the use of CDV LAV VanguardTM Plus 5/L

A Canine Distemper Virus Retrospective Study Conducted from 2011 to 2019 in Central Italy (Latium and Tuscany Regions).

Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a highly lethal contagious viral pathogen mainly found in domestic and wild canids and mustelids. Although, in Italy, circulating strains of Europe 1, Europe wildlife and Arctic type are reported, data relating to Latium and Tuscany regions are limited. In view of this, through passive surveillance, we investigated the presence of CDV and which strains were circulating in these Regions. From March 2017 to October 2019, a group of 122 subjects were tested for CDV using a PCR protocol described in the literature, with 12 detected positive; analyses were carried ou

Compatibility between a rabies vaccine and a combined vaccine against canine distemper, adenovirosis, parvovirosis, parainfluenza virus and leptospirosis.

In many cicumstances, veterinarians are requiring to be able to administer rabies vaccine in dogs at the same time as vaccinating against canine distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, parainfluenza virus and leptospirosis. The aim of this study was to assess the compatibility between a multivalent vaccine and a rabies vaccine when injected at two separate sites. Lack of interference was assessed by comparing serological response to viral components during one year following primary vaccination with vaccines administered alone or concomitantly. Antibody response to all tested components was compara

Serological detection of infection with canine distemper virus, canine parvovirus and canine adenovirus in communal dogs from Zimbabwe.

Domestic dogs are common amongst communities in sub-Saharan Africa and may serve as important reservoirs for infectious agents that may cause diseases in wildlife. Two agents of concern are canine parvovirus (CPV) and canine distemper virus (CDV), which may infect and cause disease in large carnivore species such as African wild dogs and African lions, respectively. The impact of domestic dogs and their diseases on wildlife conservation is increasing in Zimbabwe, necessitating thorough assessment and implementation of control measures. In this study, domestic dogs in north-western Zimbabwe wer

Black-backed jackal exposure to rabies virus, canine distemper virus, and Bacillus anthracis in Etosha National Park, Namibia.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) and rabies virus (RABV) occur worldwide in wild carnivore and domestic dog populations and pose threats to wildlife conservation and public health. In Etosha National Park (ENP), Namibia, anthrax is endemic and generates carcasses frequently fed on by an unusually dense population of black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas). Using serology, phylogenetic analyses (on samples obtained from February 2009-July 2010), and historical mortality records (1975-2011), we assessed jackal exposure to Bacillus anthracis (BA; the causal bacterial agent of anthrax), CDV, and RABV.

Canine Distemper Virus-Induced Transcriptional Modulation of Canine Histiocytic Sarcoma Cells in an In Vitro Model of Tumour Zones.

Canine distemper virus (Onderstepoort strain; CDVOnd) exhibits potential oncolytic properties. However, the detailed molecular mechanisms remain undetermined so far. This study investigated the influence of a CDVOnd infection and various culture conditions on gene expression patterns in canine histiocytic sarcoma (DH82) cells at different time points simulating different zones within a solid tumour. Persistently CDVOnd-infected DH82 cells and non-infected controls were cultured under standard conditions, 1% hypoxia, and starvation. Cells were analysed on day 1 (short-term) and day 3 (prolonged

Antemortem diagnosis of CDV infection by RT-PCR in distemper dogs with neurological deficits without the typical clinical presentation.

In dogs with neurological disturbances without myoclonus and extraneural signs, the clinical diagnosis of distemper is difficult perform. Considering the great infectious potential of the disease, the possibility of carrying out an antemortem diagnosis of distemper is important, particularly in hospitalized patients with neurological disease. The present study was carried out to evaluate RT-PCR for antemortem CDV detection in hospitalized dogs with neurological disturbances without the typical findings of distemper. We investigated five dogs with canine distemper virus (CDV) encephalomyelitis,

Detection of canine distemper virus in 100% of Paget's disease samples by in situ-reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction.

Previous evidence implicating paramyxoviruses in the aetiopathology of Paget's disease of bone has been controversial. While several groups have demonstrated the presence of paramyxoviruses using electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and molecular biological techniques, others have found no evidence of viruses using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). We have previously provided evidence that canine distemper virus (CDV) is present in approximately 65% of samples of pagetic bone, using in situ hybridization and RT-PCR; however, these results have been criticized. Canine distemper infection in mice: characterization of a neuro-adapted virus strain and its long-term evolution in the mouse.

The Onderstepoort strain of canine distemper virus (CDV) which has been adapted to newborn Swiss mice was used in a study in weanling mice. Intracerebral inoculation of newborn mice with either the parent or mouse-adapted virus strain led to mortality in 100% of the animals. In weanling mice the parent virus produced less than 10% mortality, whereas the mouse-adapted strain killed approximately 40% of the animals and this was not dose-dependent. Although a meningitis was observed in the surviving mice, the occurrence of viral antigens was less widespread in the brain of weanling mice than in t

Rhodococcus equi pVAPN type causing pneumonia in a dog coinfected with canine morbillivirus (distemper virus) and Toxoplasma gondii.

Canine morbillivirus (previously, canine distemper virus, CDV) is a highly contagious infectious disease-causing agent that produces immunosuppressive infections and multiple clinical signs. Canine toxoplasmosis is an opportunistic disease characterized by enteric, pulmonary, and neuromuscular signs that might be confused with CDV-induced infections. Rhodococcus equi is a Gram-positive intracellular facultative bacterium that is also opportunistic in nature, and causes pyogranulomatous infections in humans and multiple host animals, although canine rhodococcosis is rare or unrecognized. First report of clinical disease associated with canine distemper virus infection in a wild black bear (Ursus americana).

An approximately 1-yr-old black bear was discovered on the porch of a rural residence in southwestern Pennsylvania on October 26, 2011, where it remained during the day in spite of efforts to frighten it away. The bear exhibited periods of somnolence and sporadic tremors and seizures. It was euthanized by gunshot that evening. Immediately after euthanasia it was observed to have footpads that exuded fluid when compressed. It was submitted for necropsy the next day where roughened footpads were noted. Histologic examination of the brain demonstrated nonsuppurative encephalitis with eosinophilic

Recombinant canine distemper virus strain Snyder Hill expressing green or red fluorescent proteins causes meningoencephalitis in the ferret.

The propensity of canine distemper virus (CDV) to spread to the central nervous system is one of the primary features of distemper. Therefore, we developed a reverse genetics system based on the neurovirulent Snyder Hill (SH) strain of CDV (CDV(SH)) and show that this virus rapidly circumvents the blood-brain and blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barriers to spread into the subarachnoid space to induce dramatic viral meningoencephalitis. The use of recombinant CDV(SH) (rCDV(SH)) expressing enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) or red fluorescent protein (dTomato) facilitated the sensitive pa

Isolation of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and Listeria monocytogenes serotype 4 from a gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) with canine distemper.

In February 1993, clinical, pathological, and microbiological investigations were performed on an adult female gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) from northern Mississippi (USA). The fox had clinical signs consistent with canine distemper virus encephalitis. Eosinophilic inclusions characteristic of canine distemper virus were in the nuclei and cytoplasm of cerebral neurons and glial cells and in the cytoplasm of urinary, gastric, pancreatic and biliary epithelial cells. The liver contained multifocal microscopic nodular foci of granulomatous to pyogranulomatous inflammation and necrosis with

Field-deployable RspCas13d platform for rapid and extraction-free detection of giant panda- and canine-derived Canine Distemper virus.

BACKGROUND: Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a highly contagious RNA virus that causes severe disease in domestic dogs and diverse wildlife species, including endangered giant pandas. Current CDV diagnosis mainly relies on laboratory-based RT-qPCR, which requires nucleic acid extraction, trained personnel, and temperature-controlled instruments, limiting its use in field surveillance and resource-limited settings. Although CRISPR-based diagnostics offer promising alternatives, chemically defined extraction-free workflows compatible with one-pot Cas13d detection remain limited. This study addres
