Several studies suggest that harnessing natural killer (NK) cell reactivity mediated through killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) could reduce the risk of relapse after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. Based on one promising model, information on KIR2DS1 and KIR3DL1 and their cognate ligands can be used to classify donors as KIR-advantageous or KIR-disadvantageous. This study was aimed at externally validating this model in unrelated donor hematopoietic cell transplantation. The impact of the predictor on overall survival (OS) and relapse incidence was tested in a Cox

BACKGROUND: Donor obesity, defined as donor body mass index (D-BMI) of 30 kg/m or greater, has been associated with increased risk of technical failure and poor pancreas allograft outcomes. Many transplant centers establish a threshold of D-BMI of 30 kg/m to decline donor offers for pancreas transplantation. However, no previous studies differentiate the impact of mild (D-BMI, 30-35 kg/m) versus severe obesity (D-BMI, ≥35 kg/m) on pancreas allograft outcomes.
METHODS: We examined Organ Procurement Transplant Network database records for 9916 simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplants (SPKT) per

A 20-year health follow-up study of 159 initially healthy blood donors with a severe deficiency of serum IgA ( < 0.05 x 10(-3) g/L) and of 45 donors with decreased serum IgA (0.05 x 10(-3)-0.8 g/L) was carried out. The findings indicate that persons with a severe deficiency of and decreased serum IgA who are healthy as young adults have an increased susceptibility to pneumonia and recurrent episodes of other respiratory infections and a higher risk of developing autoimmune diseases in middle age. Vitiligo, autoimmune hypothyreosis, milk intolerance, and possible rheumatoid arthritis were assoc

In order to achieve on-site fluorescent detection of antibiotic doxycycline (DOC) residue, a new kind of fluorescent organosilicon nanodots (OSiNDs) was successfully constructed by a one-pot strategy and used as a novel ratiometric fluorescent probe. This method could enhance the fluorescence of DOC by conformational fixation on the surface of OSiNDs, and subsequently induced fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). Control experimental results showed that phenylamine functional groups on the as-prepared OSiNDs possessed favorable interactions with DOC by hydrogen bond/π-π stacking, lead

BACKGROUND: Convalescent plasma is undergoing randomized trials as a potential therapeutic option for COVID-19 infection. Little empirical evidence exists regarding the determination of donor eligibility and experiences with donor selection.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This prospective study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in New York to select plasma donors for a randomized, double-blind, controlled convalescent plasma trial. Clearance for donation required successful completion of an online questionnaire and an in-person screening visit, which included (a) completion of a Donor Heal

BACKGROUND: The goal of selecting a healthy blood donor is to safeguard donors and reduce the risks of infections and immunologic complications for recipients.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: To evaluate the blood donor selection process, a survey was conducted in 28 blood transfusion centers located in 15 francophone African countries. Data collected included availability of blood products, risk factors for infection identified among blood donor candidates, the processing of the information collected before blood collection, the review process for the medical history of blood donor candidates, and

Routine versus selective predonation liver biopsy (LBx) remains controversial for assuring the safety of right hepatic lobe live donor (RHLD). Between December 1999 and March 2007, 403 potential RHLD were evaluated; 142 donated. Indications for selective LBx were: abnormal liver function tests or imaging studies, body mass index (BMI) >28, history of substance abuse or family history of immune mediated liver disease. All donors had a LBx at the time of surgery. Of 403 potential RLD, 149(36.9%) were accepted as donors, 25(6.3%) had their recipient receive a deceased donor graft, 94(23.4%) were

OBJECTIVE: Hemipancreatectomy (HPx) for the purpose of organ donation has been associated with a 25% risk of developing abnormal glucose tolerance or diabetes in the year after surgery. Since 1997, the University of Minnesota has imposed criteria to prevent potential donors with clinical features associated with an increased diabetes risk from undergoing HPx. We recently assessed glucose tolerance in hemipancreatectomized donors selected since the adoption of the new criteria to determine whether the risk of developing abnormal glucose tolerance was reduced below the 25% rate previously demons

Poor immune reconstitution after haploidentical stem cell transplantation results in a high mortality from viral infections and relapse. One approach to overcome this problem is to selectively deplete the graft of alloreactive cells using an immunotoxin directed against the activation marker CD25. However, the degree of depletion of alloreactive cells is variable following stimulation with recipient peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and this can result in graft versus host disease (GVHD). We have refined this approach using recipient Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-transformed lymphoblastoi

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the outcomes of cardiac transplantation using older donors.
BACKGROUND: Despite high mortality rates on waiting lists, transplanting hearts from older donors remains a relative contraindication.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data on 479 adult heart transplant recipients, 352 status I patients, and 534 status II patients enrolled on a waiting list between 1992 and 1999. The Cox proportional hazards model was used for statistical analysis.
RESULTS: Of all donors, 20% were 40 to 50 years old and 8% were > or =50 years old. The risk of six-month mortal

We evaluated the influence of donor type in 3006 adults with adverse-risk cytogenetic acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in first complete remission undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Donor types included matched sibling (MSD), matched unrelated (MUD), mismatched unrelated (MMUD), and haploidentical donors. At 2 years, leukemia-free survival, overall survival (OS), and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD)-free/relapse-free survival were 47%, 55%, and 36%. Compared with MSD, OS was inferior with MUD (HR 1.36; 95% CI, 1.1-1.67), MMUD (HR 1.4; 95% CI, 1.07-1.83), and haploident

BACKGROUND: Health history questions are introduced into the predonation interview to identify blood donors believed to pose a higher risk of infectious diseases to recipients. This study assesses the current impact of some of those questions.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Donor deferral and donation data were extracted from a research database of the American Red Cross. The prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen or antibodies to human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis C virus, or human T-lymphotropic virus was obtained for different groups of donors who were temporarily deferred in 2000 throu

Deceased-donor robot-assisted kidney transplantation (DD-RAKT) couples an unscheduled graft pathway with a resource-dependent operation. Living-donor-dominated reviews do not resolve DD-specific selection, ischaemia logistics, outcomes, or patient benefit. We aimed to map DD-RAKT selection, preservation-to-reperfusion logistics, outcomes, and the limits of inference about patient benefit. Following PRISMA-ScR, five sources were searched through 26 July 2026; PubMed/MEDLINE and Europe PMC were updated through 21 August 2026. Reports involving human kidney-transplant recipients and explicitly id

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have explored posthematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) outcomes by race in adults; however, pediatric data addressing this topic are scarce.
PROCEDURE: This retrospective registry study included 238 White (W) and 57 Black (B) children with hematologic malignancies (HM) receiving first allogeneic HCT between 2010 and 2019 at one of the five Florida pediatric HCT centers.
RESULTS: We found no differences between W and B children in transplant characteristics, other than donor type. There was a significant difference in use of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-mismatched

The present paper demonstrates the usefulness of the temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TGGE) as a precise method for the rapid identification of HLA-DR full matched donors by molecular crossmatch analysis. The resulting TGGE fingerprints are highly diverse for different HLA-DR genotypes and identical for samples with identical HLA-DR type, as shown for a panel of 25 randomly selected PCR-SSO pretyped DNA samples. In addition, TGGE analysis of a panel of homozygous typing cell lines (HTCs) established, that even subtle differences in the DR4 subtypes are detectable by TGGE crossmatch an

Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a major obstacle to successful bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from matched unrelated donor (MUD). Currently available HLA-A, -B, and -DR serologic testing may not be sensitive enough to detect clinically relevant donor/recipient (D/R) nonidentity. Better HLA matching of D/R pairs using molecular typing for class II antigens in combination with intensive GVHD prophylaxis may potentially reduce the incidence of GVHD and lead to an improved outcome of MUD transplantation. Between July 1991 and August 1993, thirty consecutive patients with hematologic maligna

The chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect has been invoked to explain recent reports of differences in the time-resolved EPR signals between chiral and achiral molecules. However, the microscopic origin of these differences and their connection to CISS remain contested, particularly since these systems lack a metal interface. Here, we introduce an intramolecular spinterface-like mechanism that naturally arises within donor-chiral bridge-acceptor (D-χB-A) complexes and quantitatively reproduces experimentally reported observed spin polarization in time-resolved EPR studies. In our tw
