Drink lemonade! Implementation of drinking 2 h before elective orthopedic surgery to reduce prolonged fasting.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged fasting before surgery remains common despite guidelines recommending liquid fasting for 2 h and solid fasting for 6 h preoperatively. Consuming carbohydrate-rich drinks until 2 h before surgery improves patient well-being and reduces postoperative complications and insulin resistance. Given the persistence of implementation barriers, including logistical challenges and insufficient patient education, this study aimed to implement drinking up to 2 h before elective orthopedic surgery. METHODS: The Grol and Wensing implementation approached was followed in a before-after

Why do patients with chronic hepatitis C drink alcohol? An examination of pain, depression and drinking motives.

Alcohol consumption in the setting of chronic HCV is associated with accelerated progression towards cirrhosis, increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma and higher mortality. This analysis contextualizes how sociodemographic factors, chronic pain and depression relate to the motivations of individuals with chronic HCV to consume alcohol. We conducted a secondary analysis of baseline data from the Hep ART trial of behavioural interventions on alcohol use among patients with HCV. Alcohol consumption was measured using the Drinking Motives Questionnaire and a novel 6-item measure of pain-relate

The influence of status on group drinking by young adults: a survey of natural drinking groups on their way to and from bars.

BACKGROUND: Young people's social standing among friends and peers has been linked to general levels of drinking and has been shown to influence others' drinking. We extend previous research by examining young adults' status within their natural-occurring drinking groups as a predictor of their subsequent alcohol consumption and encouragement of group members' alcohol consumption during a night out at licensed drinking establishments, a salient context for heavy drinking and alcohol-related risk among young adults. METHODS: We recruited same-sex young adult drinking groups (n = 104 groups; 63

Residential history and drinking water type as predictors of serum PFAS in communities with a history of contaminated drinking water.

BACKGROUND: Drinking water is a major source of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) exposure in contaminated communities. Even after mitigation, residents may still have elevated serum PFAS levels; however, duration of elevated body burdens and influence of drinking water type (unfiltered tap, filtered tap, bottled) are poorly characterized. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate associations of residential history and drinking water type with serum PFAS among individuals living in communities with historical drinking water contamination. METHODS: The Massachusetts (MA) PFAS & Your Health Study is part o

Is it long-term continuous drinking or the post-drinking withdrawal period that triggers the first acute alcoholic pancreatitis?

OBJECTIVE: Unlike patients with alcoholic hepatitis, patients with acute alcoholic pancreatitis seldom come into the hospital in an intoxicated state. Long-term history of heavy drinking induces increases in the serum pancreatic enzymes and pancreatitis-associated protein profiles during the withdrawal period. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of withdrawal in triggering acute alcoholic pancreatitis by studying the time-course of development of the first symptoms of the first acute alcoholic pancreatitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred patients (85 M, 15 F, mean age 46, ran

Cognitive and physiological effects of an "energy drink": an evaluation of the whole drink and of glucose, caffeine and herbal flavouring fractions.

RATIONALE: Both glucose and caffeine can improve aspects of cognitive performance and, in the case of caffeine, mood. There are few studies investigating the effects of the two substances in combination. OBJECTIVES: We assessed the mood, cognitive and physiological effects of a soft drink containing caffeine and glucose as well as flavouring levels of herbal extracts. The effects of different drink fractions were also evaluated. METHODS: Using a randomised, double-blind, balanced, five-way crossover design, 20 participants who were overnight fasted and caffeine-deprived received 250 ml drink

Relating distractor suppression to problematic drinking behavior.

BACKGROUND: Impaired cognitive control has been linked to weakened self-regulatory processes underlying compulsive substance intake. Previous research has provided evidence for impaired task performance in substance-abusing groups during Stroop and Go/No-Go tasks. Mechanisms of distractor suppression in visual search might also involve overlapping regulatory components that support goal-directed behavior by resolving the attentional competition between distractors and the target of search. However, the efficiency of learning-dependent distractor suppression has not been examined in the context

Analytical description of adolescent binge drinking patients.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking is a widespread health compromising behavior among adolescents and young adults, leading to significant health problems, injuries and mortality. However, data on alcohol consumption is often unreliable, as it is mainly based on self-reporting surveys. In this five-year study (2014-2019) at the University Children's Hospital Zurich, we analyzed blood samples from adolescent binge drinking patients to investigate blood alcohol concentrations (BACs), co-ingestion of drugs, assess compliance between self-reported and measured substance use, and test for genetic component

Iodine supplementation and drinking-water perchlorate mitigation.

Ensuring adequate iodine intake is important, particularly among women of reproductive age, because iodine is necessary for early life development. Biologically based dose-response modeling of the relationships among iodide status, perchlorate dose, and thyroid hormone production in pregnant women has indicated that iodide intake has a profound effect on the likelihood that exposure to goitrogens will produce hypothyroxinemia. We evaluated the possibility of increasing iodine intake to offset potential risks from perchlorate exposure. We also explored the effect of dietary exposures to nitrate

A triphasic metacognitive formulation of problem drinking.

UNLABELLED: In this paper, a triphasic metacognitive formulation of problem drinking and its implications for treatment are presented together with a summary of the evidence consistent with this approach. In the triphasic formulation during the pre-alcohol use phase, alcohol-related triggers, in the form of cravings, images, memories or thoughts, activate positive metacognitive beliefs about extended thinking, which lead to desire thinking, rumination and worry or their combination. The activation of the latter brings to an escalation of cravings and negative affect, strengthening negative met

MOPEDS: Motorized Objects Propelling Ethanol Drinking Subjects.

Mopeds are not subject to the same laws and jurisdiction as cars or motorcycles, including the requirement of a driver's license. We undertook this study to examine the influence of alcohol (ETOH) on moped crashes. We retrospectively reviewed adult moped injuries compared with motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) and motorcycle crashes (MCCs) from 1995 through 2006. Demographics, severity of injury, mortality, and serum ETOH levels were recorded. Data were analyzed using the Student t test for continuous data and the χ² test for proportional data. Motor vehicle crashes accounted for 7186 admissions. M

Academic and social motives and drinking behavior.

This longitudinal study of 1,447 first-time college students tested separate time-varying covariate models of the relations between academic and social motives/behaviors and alcohol use and related problems from senior year of high school through the end of the second year in college. Structural equation models identified small but significant inverse relations between academic motives/behaviors and alcohol use across all time points, with relations of somewhat larger magnitude between academic motives/behaviors and alcohol-related problems across all semesters other than senior year in high s
