Linking increasing drought stress to Scots pine mortality and bark beetle infestations.

In the dry Swiss Rhone Valley, Scots pine forests have experienced increased mortality in recent years. It has commonly been assumed that drought events and bark beetles fostered the decline, however, whether bark beetle outbreaks increased in recent years and whether they can be linked to drought stress or increasing temperature has never been studied. In our study, we correlated time series of drought indices from long-term climate stations, 11-year mortality trends from a long-term research plot, and mortality probabilities modeled from tree rings (as an indicator of tree vitality) with doc

Drought-induced amplification and epidemic transmission of West Nile virus in southern Florida.

We show that the spatial-temporal variability of human West Nile (WN) cases and the transmission of West Nile virus (WNV) to sentinel chickens are associated with the spatial-temporal variability of drought and wetting in southern Florida. Land surface wetness conditions at 52 sites in 31 counties in southern Florida for 2001-2003 were simulated and compared with the occurrence of human WN cases and the transmission of WNV to sentinel chickens within these counties. Both WNV transmission to sentinel chickens and the occurrence of human WN cases were associated with drought 2-6 mo prior and lan

Citrulline and DRIP-1 protein (ArgE homologue) in drought tolerance of wild watermelon.

Drought-affected plants experience more than just desiccation of their organs due to water deficit. Plants transpire 1000 times more molecules of water than of CO2 fixed by photosynthesis in full sunlight. One effect of transpiration is to cool the leaves. Accordingly, drought brings about such multi-stresses as high temperatures, excess photoradiation and other factors that affect plant viability. Wild watermelon serves as a suitable model system to study drought responses of C3 plants, since this plant survives drought by maintaining its water content without any wilting of leaves or desicca

Comparative Transcriptome and Weighted Gene Co-Expression Network Analyses Reveal a Shared Core Response and Quantitatively Divergent Regulatory Modules Between Drought-Tolerant and Drought-Sensitive Foxtail Millet.

Drought limits the stability of foxtail millet production and the efficient use of germplasm resources, yet whether drought-tolerant and drought-sensitive accessions engage fundamentally distinct pathways or a shared, quantitatively reprogrammed network remains unclear. We generated 36 leaf transcriptomes from three drought-sensitive (DSEN) and three drought-tolerant (DTOL) accessions under well-watered (WW) and drought-stress (DS) conditions, retaining 25,099 genes for downstream analyses. Principal component analysis confirmed water treatment as the primary driver of global expression variat

Revolutionizing drought defense: The water-plant-microbe synergy in climate-smart agriculture.

Global warming-induced water scarcity threatens agricultural sustainability. While precision irrigation and microbial inoculants are recognized as effective individual strategies, their synergistic potential remains under-explored. This review synthesizes recent advances in the "water-plant-microbe" synergy to propose a bidirectional regulatory mechanism for climate-smart agriculture. We demonstrate that irrigation regimes function as a primary filter for rhizosphere microbial assembly, thereby defining the hydraulic niche for colonization. Conversely, functional microbes actively engineer the

Temporal phenotypic responses of early vegetative maize to heat, drought, and combined stresses.

Understanding how maize responds to heat, drought, and the combination of stresses is essential for developing resilient cultivars for future climates. We characterized temporal phenotypic responses of 47 genetically diverse Zea mays inbred lines grown under control, drought, heat, and combined drought-heat stresses for 13 days in a high-throughput phenotyping platform. Plant area was modeled over time using Bayesian hierarchical growth analysis. Treatment explained the largest proportion of phenotypic variance, while genotype × treatment interaction accounted for up to 35% of color variation.

A NAC-MYB-cysteine regulatory module enhances drought and salt tolerance in soybean.

Drought and salinity are two major factors limiting soybean productivity worldwide, and both stresses can negatively affect plant growth in similar manners by disrupting cellular redox homeostasis and metabolism. However, the regulatory networks coordinating transcriptional control and metabolic adaptation under both types of stress remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that the R2R3-MYB transcription factors GmMYB60a and GmMYB60b serve as core negative regulators of drought and salt tolerance in soybean. Loss-of-function mutations in GmMYB60a/b clearly increased stress tolerance, whi

From molecules to field: Integrated insights into cuticle-mediated drought tolerance in plants.

Drought stress exacerbates non-stomatal water loss, which hinders agricultural growth and global food security. The cuticle, a layer of cutin, waxes, and other polymers, protects plants from the negative impact of drought. One crucial adaptation that has enabled terrestrial plants to survive and flourish in drought-prone regions is the development of cuticle structures. In this review, we (1) provide an overview of the molecular and enzymatic pathways involved in the biosynthesis of cutin and wax; (2) analyze important regulatory networks that control the formation of cuticles, such as abscisi

Fraxinus mandshurica SPL2 enhances tolerance to drought stress by activating the phenylpropanoid pathway.

Drought is a major abiotic stressor that severely threatens forest tree growth and survival worldwide. The SQUAMOSA promoter binding protein-like (SPL) family is a group of plant-specific transcription factors that play important roles in plant growth, development, and environmental adaptation. Our study showed that overexpression of Fraxinus mandshurica SPL2 (FmSPL2) promotes lignin biosynthesis and enhances drought tolerance. Phenotypic analysis indicated that the stomatal aperture of FmSPL2-OE1 and FmSPL2-OE2 was reduced by 12.05% and 19.23%, respectively, compared to the wild type (WT). Ad

PhCBP60b positively regulates drought tolerance in Petunia by transcriptionally activating PhSWEET11 and PhUGT74E2.

BACKGROUND: The calmodulin-binding protein 60-like protein family plays important roles in plant immunity and stress responses, but its functions in ornamental plants remain poorly understood. In this study, we characterized PhCBP60b from Petunia × hybrida 'Mitchell Diploid' and investigated its role in drought tolerance. RESULTS: PhCBP60b encoded a nuclear-localized protein containing a conserved calmodulin-binding domain and was phylogenetically closely related to Arabidopsis AtCBP60b. PhCBP60b was predominantly expressed in roots. Overexpression of PhCBP60b in Arabidopsis and petunia enhan

MdMYB70 transcription factor modulates malate accumulation under drought stress in apple.

Malic acid, a key component of the organoleptic quality, determines the flavor of apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) fruit. R2R3-MYB transcription factors (TFs) have important functions in stress response, but their roles in drought-mediated malate metabolism remain poorly understood. In this study, a drought-responsive gene, MdMYB70, which was relevant to the content of malate, was identified and characterized. Overexpressing MdMYB70 promoted malic acid accumulation and improved drought tolerance, while silencing MdMYB70 showed the opposite results. Moreover, MdMYB70 directly combined with the pr

The StMYB55/StPYL8-StEXLB1 Module Is Associated With Drought Tolerance and Stomatal Regulation in Potato.

Potato growth and development are inhibited by drought stress, which in extreme situations jeopardises tuber yield and quality. Despite progress in understanding drought stress responses, the full regulatory network remains unclear. In this study, we found that the cell wall-localised expansin gene StEXLB1 was significantly induced by polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG6000) and abscisic acid (ABA). StEXLB1-Overexpression (OE) reduced stomatal density and aperture, accompanied by enhancing drought tolerance. Conversely RNA interference (RNAi) lines exhibited the opposite effects. Spatiotemporal dynamics of vegetation cover and its responses to drought in arid northwestern China.

Under the dual pressures of accelerating global warming and intensifying human activities, arid and semi-arid ecosystems are confronting unprecedented ecological challenges. Fractional Vegetation Cover (FVC), as a critical indicator of vegetation dynamics and ecosystem health, has attracted increasing research attention; however, the spatiotemporal evolution patterns of FVC and its underlying response mechanisms to drought stress remain insufficiently understood. Using a dimidiate pixel model, FVC was derived from Landsat imagery during 1990-2022 for the arid northwestern China. Its spatiotemp

Scion-based drought stress memory affects potato response to water deficit.

A scion-based stress memory signal, which was derived from drought-primed potato plants, was transmitted to new potato plants generated through vegetative reproduction. This affected potato tuber yield. Drought is one of the most significant threats to agricultural productivity worldwide. The cultivated potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a crop species that is sensitive to drought stress. This study investigated the impact of scion-based drought stress memory on tuber yield, physiological parameters, gene expression, and DNA methylation in the vegetative progeny of grafted plants. The tuber prog

Functional memory of drought affects leaf chemical defenses and microbial interactions in aspen.

Drought is an important driver of tree mortality, but its long-term impacts on trait expression remain poorly understood. Leaves are a key interface at which trees respond to abiotic stress, and foliar traits such as chemical defenses and microbial communities may play a role in determining post-drought resilience. We tested whether prior-year drought leaves a persistent imprint on leaf traits in Populus tremuloides Michx. Using a 3-year common garden experiment with controlled water limitation, we measured two classes of defensive phenolics-salicinoid phenolic glycosides (SPGs) and condensed

Rhizosphere Dialogue: Microorganisms Mediated by Root Exudates Alleviate Drought Stress in Grasses.

Drought stress threatens the ecological functions and economic value of grasses, posing a major challenge to their sustainable production. Plants co-evolve with rhizosphere microbial communities, sometimes described as the plant's second genome, that can contribute to drought adaptation. Drought alters root architecture, hormonal and redox regulation and belowground carbon allocation, thereby modifying the quantity and composition of root exudation and reshaping the rhizosphere environment. This review uses the rhizosphere dialogue as an integrative framework to link these plant responses with

Genotype-Specific Interactions Between Wheat and Rhizosphere Microbiome Under Drought Stress.

Drought severely limits global wheat production, and plants can mitigate this stress by recruiting beneficial rhizosphere microbiomes. However, the role of host genotype in shaping this recruitment and influencing microbial inoculant efficacy is poorly understood. Here, we aimed to elucidate the interplay among host genotype, drought stress, and inoculation with Trichoderma citrinoviride. A factorial pot experiment investigated the responses of two wheat genotypes (JN 14-95, constitutively drought-tolerant; JN 72, drought-responsive) to water regimes and inoculation with T. citrinoviride. Overexpression of SeTIP2;3 and SePIP1;4 from Salicornia europaea Enhances Drought Tolerance in Arabidopsis.

Aquaporins (AQPs) are key channels for water and small molecule transport across membranes, and represent early targets of stress signaling pathways in plants. Salicornia europaea is a typical halophyte adapted to saline-alkaline and nutrient-poor soils. However, studies on AQPs from S. europaea and their precise roles in abiotic stress responses remain limited. In this study, SeTIP2;3 and SePIP1;4 were cloned from S. europaea. Bioinformatics analysis confirmed that they belong to the TIP and PIP subfamilies of AQPs, respectively. Subcellular localization analysis revealed that SeTIP2;3 and Se

Microbial community dynamics during historic drought and flood in Great Salt Lake.

UNLABELLED: Understanding human-driven environmental impacts on microbial community distribution, abundance, and function remains a central challenge in microbial ecology. In particular, the drivers of temporal succession in community membership following perturbation remain unclear. Great Salt Lake, Utah, bears clear hallmarks of human disturbance, including a rock-filled railroad causeway that sequestered its northern arm from freshwater river influx, leading to localized hypersalination and food web collapse. Following decades of riverine water diversion, the southern arm of this terminal l
