BACKGROUND: Dry needling is an intervention used by physiotherapists to manage muscle spasticity. We report the effects of three sessions of dry needling on ankle plantar flexor muscle spasticity and cortical excitability in a patient with multiple sclerosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 40-year-old Iranian woman with an 11-year history of multiple sclerosis. The study outcomes were measured by the modified modified Ashworth scale, transcranial magnetic stimulation parameters, and active and passive ankle range of motion. They were assessed before (T0), after three sessions of dry nee

INTRODUCTION: Piriformis muscle syndrome (PMS) is a condition that can lead to symptoms including gluteal pain, local tenderness, and limitation of hip joint motion in daily activities, and it may have a major impact on some daily functions such as gait. We proposed that dry needling (DN) can improve the gait of individuals with PMS.
METHODS: Thirty-two individuals with PMS were assigned equally and randomly to the treatment group or the wait-list control group. Subjects in the treatment group received three sessions of DN of the piriformis muscle. All participants in both groups were educate

INTRODUCTION: Ankle sprain is a common musculoskeletal injury that leads to recurrent instability. Repeated ankle sprain can be a mechanism for creating trigger point. Proper treatment of trigger points, in addition to preventing recurrence of sprains, may reduce pain and improve muscle function. This improvement can be the result of preserving the surrounding tissues from excessive pressure.
OBJECTIVE: Investigate the added value of dry needling into perturbation training protocol for chronic ankle sprain.
DESIGN: Randomized clinical trial; assessor-blind; before and after comparison.

STUDY DESIGN: Pilot, randomized, single-blinded controlled clinical trial.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Trigger point (s) (TrPs) in thenar muscles could be a cause of narrowing of carpal tunnel in manual laborers with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Effects of dry needling (DN) on the treatment of muscle tension have been reported, but no research has been done on the effect of DN on thenar tight muscles on reducing CTS symptoms. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of DN of thenar muscles TrPs in the treatment of mild-to-moderate carpal tunnel syndrome.
METHODS: Thirty manual laborers

BACKGROUND: Survivors of moderate and severe traumatic brain injury typically present with spasticity, an upper motor neuron lesion associated with hyperexcitability of the stretch reflex due to disinhibition of cortical influences on spinal cord circuits and structural and functional changes in skeletal muscle. There is growing evidence supporting the effectiveness of dry needling in abating spasticity.
CASE PRESENTATION: The present case aims to quantify the effects of dry needling on upper limb spastic muscles in a survivor of severe traumatic brain injury in a 27-year-old Iranian man. The

CONTEXT: Chronic musculoskeletal disorders in the shoulder joint are often associated with myofascial trigger points (MTrPs), particularly in the upper trapezius (UT) muscle. Dry needling (DN) is a treatment of choice for myofascial pain syndrome. However, local lesions and severe postneedle soreness sometimes hamper the direct application of DN in the UT. Therefore, finding an alternative point of treatment seems useful in this regard.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of UT versus infraspinatus (ISP) DN on pain and disability of subjects with shoulder pain. The authors hypothesized that IS

BACKGROUND: There is good evidence in the literature supporting physiotherapy in the management of some forms of headache. Dry needling of myofascial trigger points is becoming an increasingly common approach despite a paucity of research evidence supporting its use. The purpose of this review was to determine the evidence supporting the use of dry needling in addition to conventional physiotherapy in the management of tension-type and cervicogenic headache.
METHODS: Ten databases were searched for evidence of the effect of dry needling on the severity and frequency of tension and cervicogeni

INTRODUCTION: Myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) in the tibialis posterior muscle (TP) can create a TP dysfunction, leading to alterations in plantar pressure distribution and foot loading patterns. These alterations can be objectively evaluated through baropodometric analysis. Our hypothesis was that the application of Deep dry needling (DDN) to the TP latent trigger points (LTrPs), may reverse these changes.
OBJECTIVE: to investigate whether changes in plantar pressure distribution occur after the application of DDN to the TP in individuals with LTrPs, to identify the specific areas where th

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff repair (RCR) is one of the most prevalent procedures to manage rotator cuff tears (RCT). Postoperative shoulder pain is a common complication following RCR and may be aggravated by activation of myofascial trigger points (MTrP) associated with the injury to the soft tissues surrounding the surgical incision. This study aimed to describe a preliminary, randomized, sham-controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing 4 sessions of myofascial trigger point dry needling (MTrP-DN) as a muscle treatment approach along with 10 sessions of multimodal rehabilitat

Facial anatomical structures are not easily accessible to manual palpation. The aim of our study is to objectively assess temporomandibular joint and perimandibular muscles dimensions by means of sonographic measurements before and after dry needling (DN) in asymptomatic subjects. Seventeen subjects participated in this before-after study with a within-subject control. After random allocation, one side of the face was used for the intervention and the contralateral as control. DN was performed on the temporal, masseter, and sternocleidomastoid muscles. Each subject was examined bilaterally bef

BACKGROUND: Although most common adverse events associated with dry needling can be considered minor, serious adverse events including induced pneumothorax cannot be excluded, and safety instructions for reducing the risk of pleura puncture are needed.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate if anthropometric features can predict the rhomboid major muscle and pleura depth in a sample of healthy subjects to avoid the risk of pneumothorax during dry needling.
METHODS: A diagnostic study was conducted on 59 healthy subjects (52.5% male) involving a total of 236 measurements (both sides in maximum inspiration

BACKGROUND: Chronic nonspecific neck pain (CNSNP) is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal disorders worldwide. Its etiology is multifactorial, and it constitutes a leading cause of work absenteeism and a significant socioeconomic burden. Therapeutic exercise, strongly supported by scientific evidence, is considered the cornerstone physiotherapy intervention for its management. In recent years, electrical dry needling (EDN) has been increasingly applied in musculoskeletal disorders with the aim of modulating pain and improving function.
OBJECTIVE: This protocol aims to compare the effecti

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral pain (PFP) involves 25-40 % of painful knee cases. These patients complain of pain around the knee that is aggravated by pressure on the patella or upon stair climbing, standing, running and squatting. The effect of stretching exercises with or without dry needling treatment was investigated.
METHODS: This single-blind RCT enrolled 36 participants randomly allocated to either a stretching-only group (SO: 32.89 ± 7.51 years, BMI 23.00 ± 1.59 kg/m2) or a stretching plus dry needling group (SDN: 31.89 ± 8.32 years, BMI 22.47 ± 1.94 kg/m2) via permuted block randomizati

Bruxism is a significant phenomenon that should not be underestimated, given its prevalence and consequences. The major symptoms associated with bruxism include myalgia, decreased quality of life, and limited mandibular movements. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of four treatment methods for managing bruxism-related symptoms: botulinum toxin (BoNT-A), dry needling (DN), pharmacological therapy (PT), and manual therapy (MT). Eighty patients with bruxism (44 female, 36 male) were randomly assigned to four groups of 20 patients each. All therapies were administered by t
