Comparative effects of single-task and dual-task acute moderate-intensity exercise on cortisol and cognitive performance.

BACKGROUND: Acute physical exercise elicits neuroendocrine responses that may transiently modulate cognitive performance. While moderate-intensity single-task exercise (e.g., running) has been shown to improve cognition, the acute cognitive and hormonal effects of dual-task exercise, which involves cognitive load, remain underexplored. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to compare the effects of moderate-intensity single-task (5-km run) and dual-task (orienteering) exercise on salivary cortisol levels and cognitive performance in healthy young adults. METHODS: Twenty-one male college students (age:

Smartphone-Based Analysis for Early Detection of Aging Impact on Gait and Stair Negotiation: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Aging is associated with gradual mobility decline, often undetected until it affects daily life. This study investigates the potential of smartphone-based accelerometry to detect early age-related changes in gait and stair performance in middle-aged adults. Eighty-eight healthy participants were divided into four age groups: young (20-35 years), early middle-aged (45-54 years), late middle-aged (55-65 years), and older adults (65-80 years). They completed single-task, cognitive, and physical dual-task gait assessments and stair negotiation tests. While single-task walking did not reveal early

Cognitive and motor dual-task performance in older adults with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus: A cross-sectional study.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and prediabetes (PreDM) are common among older adults and are associated with cognitive and physical impairments. Dual-task testing, which combines motor and cognitive tasks, reflects real-world functional ability. However, comparisons of dual-task performance between older adults with T2DM and PreDM are limited. This study aimed to compare cognitive and motor dual-task performance and related physical and cognitive parameters in older adults with T2DM and PreDM. This cross-sectional study included 46 older adults (23 T2DM and 23 PreDM), all aged ≥ 65 years. Dua

Cognitive-motor interference during fine and gross motor tasks in children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD).

BACKGROUND: While typically developing children produce relatively automatized postural control processes, children with DCD seem to exhibit an automatization deficit. Dual tasks with various cognitive loads seem to be an effective way to assess the automatic deficit hypothesis. AIMS: The aims of the study were: (1) to examine the effect of a concurrent cognitive task on fine and gross motor tasks in children with DCD, and (2) to determine whether the effect varied with different difficulty levels of the concurrent task. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: We examined dual-task performance (Trail-Making

Working memory is a core executive function supporting dual-task locomotor performance across childhood and adolescence.

Most daily-life ambulatory tasks involve dual tasking, for example, talking while walking. In children, the evidence supporting the effects of age on dual tasking is confounded by the difficulty of the cognitive task and lack of adjustment to suit individual cognitive abilities. To address this issue, the current study examined the effects of age, cognitive load, and executive functioning on the degree of dual-task gait interference across childhood and adolescence. We tested 120 typically developing children aged 6-11 years, adolescents aged 12-16 years, and young adults aged 18-25 years. Par

Cognitive-exercise dual-task training delays natural aging/D-galactose-induced cognitive decline in mice.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive–exercise dual-task training has been shown to enhance cognitive function through mechanisms such as suppression of chronic inflammation, reduction of oxidative stress, and enhancement of synaptic plasticity. However, the precise mechanisms underlying the ability of dual-task training to delay aging-related cognitive decline remain incompletely understood. METHODS: Aged male C57BL/6J mice were subjected to a 12-week intervention program consisting of cognitive training, exercise, or cognitive–exercise dual-task training. Cognitive and physical function were assessed using

Effects of partial sleep deprivation on sustained attention and inhibitory control in a dual-task paradigm.

We investigated the effect of an acute partial sleep deprivation on upper limb dual-task performance. Through a within-subject design, we assessed participants' inhibitory control (Go/No-go task; GNG), sustained attention (Psychomotor vigilance test; PVT) and motor performance (finger tapping; FT) after one night of partial sleep deprivation (SD) versus one night of normal sleep (NS). After both SD and NS, participants underwent three single task (ST) conditions and two dual-task (DT) conditions in a counterbalanced order. We observed in 46 participants substantial differences between DT and S

Neither uni- nor multi-modal exercise interventions improved single- and dual-task gait performance in physically active healthy elderly - a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Aging is an inevitable process leading, inter alia, to the loss of muscle mass as well as the decrease in physical and cognitive function. These age-related impairments translate into a reduced gait performance and an increased risk of falls, which can be tackled with resistance training, Unimodal intervention (UMI). However, Multimodal intervention (MMI), i.e. combined motor-cognitive and resistance training, might be a more promising approach to increase physical and cognitive function in old adults. Therefore, this pilot study aimed to investigate the effects of MMI, compared to UM

The effects of a secondary task on gait in axial spondyloarthritis.

Studies on the effects of dual tasking in patients with chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases are limited. The aim of this study was to assess dual tasking while walking in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) in comparison to healthy controls. Thirty patients with axSpA and thirty healthy controls underwent a 10-m walk test at a self-selected comfortable walking speed in single- and dual-task conditions. Foot-worn inertial sensors were used to compute spatiotemporal gait parameters. Analysis of spatiotemporal gait parameters showed that the secondary manual task negatively affected

Dichotic listening while walking: A dual-task paradigm examining gait asymmetries in healthy older and younger adults.

Dual-task studies have employed various cognitive tasks to evaluate the relationship between gait and cognition. Most of these tests are not specific to a single cognitive ability or sensory modality and have limited ecological validity. In this study, we employed a dual-task paradigm using Dichotic Listening (DL) as concomitant cognitive task to walking. We argue that DL is a robust task to unravel the gait-cognition link in different healthy populations of different age groups. Thirty-six healthy older adults (Mean = 67.11) and forty younger adults (Mean = 22.75) participated in the study. D

Dual-Tasking Effects on Gait and Turning Performance of Stroke Survivors with Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Stroke survivors depend on the unaffected leg during walking and standing. The presence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) affecting both legs may further affect the postural balance and gait instability and increase the risk for falls in such patients. Thus, this study was conducted to investigate the effect of dual taskings on the gait and turning performance of stroke survivors with DPN. METHODS: Forty stroke survivors were recruited (20 with DPN and 20 without DPN) in this cross-sectional study design. Instrumented timed up and go (iTUG) tests were conducted in three diff
