Is There a Relationship Between Styloid Process Morphology and Symptoms Associated With Eagle Syndrome?

BACKGROUND: Eagle Syndrome is characterized by an elongated or angulated styloid process, often linked to symptoms such as throat pain, otalgia, and dizziness. The association between styloid morphology and symptoms remains unclear. This study evaluates the potential correlation between styloid process characteristics and Eagle Syndrome symptoms. METHODS: This retrospective study included 945 patients who underwent paranasal sinus CT between 2019 and 2022. Styloid process length, angulation, and morphological types (continuous, pseudoarticular, and segmentary) were evaluated. Clinical symptom

Effect of viscosity in the medium for sperm cryopreservation of golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos).

BACKGROUND: The development of assisted reproduction techniques for birds is useful for ex situ conservation but is limited. For the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), only artificial insemination procedures using extenders developed over 50 years ago have been described. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of the viscosity of the cryopreservation medium on the acrosomal reaction ability of A. chrysaetos sperm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Viscosity was determined in 45 ejaculates. A design using the Lake medium, 6 % dimethylacetamide (DMA), and Ficoll (10 %, 35 %, and 45 %) was developed to create c

Symptomatic carotid stenosis in Eagle syndrome managed with traditional endarterectomy and styloidectomy.

Eagle syndrome represents an anatomic variant present in 4% of the population. It is characterized by an elongated styloid process or ossified stylohyoid ligament with resultant irritation of cervical neurovascular structures. Common manifestations include craniofacial or cervical pain related to compression of the glossopharyngeal nerve. In rare cases, patients can present with a stroke or transient ischemic attack due to associated carotid artery injury. Fewer than 25 prior case reports describe vascular symptoms in the setting of associated carotid artery dissection and, in one case, a pseu

Eagle syndrome: a rare pathology presented in a 3-Dimensional reconstructed view.

A 42-year-old male presented with 3-month history of constant right-sided frontal headaches, severe right-sided intermittent sharp jaw pain, odynophagia, globus pharyngis, and worsening episodes of blurry vision in his right eye. Cervicocerebral angiography demonstrated a prominent, 4 cm right sided styloid process with close proximity to the right internal carotid artery (ICA). The patient was referred to otorhinolaryngology for styloidectomy and continued care.

A rare vascular complication of Eagle syndrome highlight by CTA with neck flexion.

We report a case of a 53-year-old woman admitted to the emergency department with left hemiplegia, tinnitus and palpitations. A cerebral and cervical computed tomography angiography revealed an acute large ischemic stroke on the right Sylvian territory, which was related to a dissection of the right internal carotid. Moreover, a left internal carotid pseudo-aneurysm was observed. These two injuries were presumably imputable to a bilateral Eagle Syndrome. Indeed, the temporal styloid processes were measured at 31mm on both sides. To support our hypothesis of a stylocarotid impingement, a cervic

Isolated Horner Syndrome From an Elongated Styloid Process (Eagle Syndrome).

Eagle syndrome occurs when an elongated styloid process causes otolaryngological or neurological symptoms or signs. We report a patient who had an isolated asymptomatic Horner syndrome that resulted from a pinned internal carotid artery being dynamically injured by an elongated styloid process during chiropractic neck manipulation. There was no evidence of arterial dissection.

Atypical presentation of Eagle syndrome with hypoglossal nerve palsy and Horner syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Many nerve injuries have been associated with Eagle syndrome. The cranial nerves V, VII, IX, and X have been reported to be injured by the elongated styloid process in this syndrome. METHODS: We describe a case of Eagle syndrome with atypical symptoms of hypoglossal nerve palsy and Horner syndrome. RESULTS: A 56-year-old woman presented with right hypoglossal nerve palsy, right Horner syndrome, right neck pain, and symptoms mimicking transient cerebral ischemia. An angioscan showed elongated styloid process bilaterally with the right process compressing the right carotid artery c

Visual acuity in adults with Asperger's syndrome: no evidence for "eagle-eyed" vision.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum conditions (ASC) are defined by criteria comprising impairments in social interaction and communication. Altered visual perception is one possible and often discussed cause of difficulties in social interaction and social communication. Recently, Ashwin et al. suggested that enhanced ability in local visual processing in ASC was due to superior visual acuity, but that study has been the subject of methodological criticism, placing the findings in doubt. METHODS: The present study investigated visual acuity thresholds in 24 adults with Asperger's syndrome and compar

[Elongated styloid process (Eagle's syndrome): literature review and a case report].

Eagle's syndrome occurs when an elongated styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament causes recurrent throat pain or foreign body sensation, dysphagia, or facial pain. Additional symptoms may include neck or throat pain with radiation to the ipsilateral ear. The symptoms related to this condition can be confused with those attributed to a wide variety of facial neuralgias. Diagnosis can usually be made on physical examination by digital palpation of the styloid process in the tonsillar fossa. The treatment of Eagle's syndrome is primarily surgical. The styloid process can be shortened th

Soils of Eagle crater and Meridiani Planum at the Opportunity Rover landing site.

The soils at the Opportunity site are fine-grained basaltic sands mixed with dust and sulfate-rich outcrop debris. Hematite is concentrated in spherules eroded from the strata. Ongoing saltation exhumes the spherules and their fragments, concentrating them at the surface. Spherules emerge from soils coated, perhaps from subsurface cementation, by salts. Two types of vesicular clasts may represent basaltic sand sources. Eolian ripples, armored by well-sorted hematite-rich grains, pervade Meridiani Planum. The thickness of the soil on the plain is estimated to be about a meter. The flatness and

The glossopharyngeal nerve, glossopharyngeal neuralgia and the Eagle's syndrome--current concepts and management.

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is not just a painful condition. At times, it may be life-threatening as a result of associated cardiovascular consequences. Even in the absence of life-threatening consequences, it can be a severe debilitating disease with depression, suicidal tendencies, fear of swallowing, loss of weight and under-nutrition. The treatment for glossopharyngeal neuralgia and Eagle's syndrome has evolved over time. This review summarises the scientific evidence and philosophy about current management and therapy. Emphasis is placed on the importance of excluding secondary causes of g

Can We Predict Who Will Experience Adverse Events While Using Smoking Cessation Pharmacotherapy? A Secondary Analysis of the EAGLES Clinical Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Concerns about potential side effects remain a barrier to uptake of Food and Drug Administration-approved smoking cessation pharmacotherapy (ie, varenicline, bupropion, nicotine replacement therapy [NRT]). However, use of pharmacotherapy can double the odds of successful quitting. Knowledge of an individual's likelihood of side effects while taking smoking cessation pharmacotherapy could influence treatment planning discussions and monitoring. METHODS: We conducted a secondary, post hoc analysis to predict an individual's likelihood of adverse events (AEs) using the Evaluating A

Psychiatric Comorbidity and Multimorbidity in the EAGLES Trial: Descriptive Correlates and Associations With Neuropsychiatric Adverse Events, Treatment Adherence, and Smoking Cessation.

INTRODUCTION: Psychiatric and substance use disorders represent barriers to smoking cessation. We sought to identify correlates of psychiatric comorbidity (CM; 2 diagnoses) and multimorbidity (MM; 3+ diagnoses) among smokers attempting to quit and to evaluate whether these conditions predicted neuropsychiatric adverse events (NPSAEs), treatment adherence, or cessation efficacy (CE). AIMS AND METHODS: Data were collected from November 2011 to January 2015 across sixteen countries and reflect the psychiatric cohort of the EAGLES trial. Participants were randomly assigned to receive varenicline,

Heavy metals in soft tissue of white-tailed eagles found dead or moribund in Germany and Austria from 1993 to 2000.

Residues of the potentially toxic metals lead, mercury, and cadmium were analyzed in liver and kidney tissue of 61 free-ranging white-tailed eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla) found dead or moribund in Germany and Austria between 1993 and 2000. Highest values and the widest range were detected for lead in liver and for mercury in kidney tissue. Lead concentrations considered to induce lethal lead poisoning (>5 ppm wet wt) were determined in 28% of liver samples. Lead fragments were detected it the gizzards of two specimens, presumably having died from lead intoxication. Histopathological findings i

Efficacy and safety of pharmacotherapies for smoking cessation in anxiety disorders: Subgroup analysis of the randomized, active- and placebo-controlled EAGLES trial.

BACKGROUND: Smoking rates are high in adults with anxiety disorders (ADs), yet little is known about the safety and efficacy of smoking-cessation pharmacotherapies in this group. METHODS: Post hoc analyses in 712 smokers with AD (posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD], n = 192; generalized anxiety disorder [GAD], n = 243; panic disorder [PD], n = 277) and in a nonpsychiatric cohort (NPC; n = 4,028). Participants were randomly assigned to varenicline, bupropion, nicotine-replacement therapy (NRT), or placebo plus weekly smoking-cessation counseling for 12 weeks, with 12 weeks follow-up. General

Styloidogenic Jugular Venous Compression Syndrome: A Rare Vascular Variant of Eagle Syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Styloidogenic jugular venous compression syndrome, a recently recognized vascular variant of Eagle syndrome, a rare condition caused by the elongation of the styloid process or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament, occurs when the internal jugular vein is compressed between the styloid process and C1 transverse process, leading to a spectrum of neurovascular and cervicofacial symptoms. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old male pilot presented with right-sided pulsatile tinnitus, vertigo, and episodic near-syncope that progressively worsened over 4 years despite

Eagle syndrome with bilateral stylohyoid ossification: a surgical case report with anatomical correlation.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Eagle syndrome is a rare clinical condition characterized by craniofacial pain and a wide range of associated symptoms. This syndrome is characterized by the elongation of the styloid process of the temporal bone and/or the calcification of the stylohyoid muscle tendon. The stylohyoid muscle elevates and retracts the hyoid bone during swallowing and contributes to mandibular depression through its anatomical interaction with the digastric muscle. In this case, clinical evaluation and anatomical knowledge led to the diagnostic suspicion and a minimally invasive and

Differential screen and treatment of sternocleidomastoid syndrome versus eagle syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Differential screening is a complex process in chronic pain conditions. There is significant uncertainty that surrounds the pathophysiology of many chronic pain syndromes that may lead to misdiagnosis and treatment failures. Such differential screening is even more challenging where there is regional overlapping from surrounding tissues. This case report chronicles the differential screening and treatment of a patient with sternocleidomastoid syndrome (SCMS) originally diagnosed as Eagle's syndrome (ES). CASE DESCRIPTION: A 55-year-old woman, referred to a physical therapi

Radiographic Reference Intervals of the Cardiac Silhouette Width in the Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus).

Radiograph imaging is an important diagnostic tool for assessing cardiac size in avian patients. The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalis), once on the United States Federal List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants, is now a thriving species in the United States. However, there is surprisingly little information regarding bald eagle cardiac reference values obtained through radiographic imaging for use in assessment of cardiac disease in this species. This study was performed to establish reference values of cardiac size in the bald eagle. Ventrodorsal radiographic images were tak
