OBJECTIVES: Prominent ear abnormalities affect 5% of the population. A prospective, double-blind study of patients who underwent otoplasty procedures to correct these abnormalities was conducted to compare two surgical techniques. They diverge by the preservation or not of conchal cartilage.
METHODS: The two techniques were compared by measuring the cephalo-auricular and scapho-conchal angles. Measurements were performed in pre and 6-months post-operative periods using alginate molding. Twenty patients were randomly assigned to two groups (with and without cartilage preservation) with 10 part

Ear reconstruction is considered to be a challenging form of surgery. In cases of microtia, surgeons must reconstruct complex missing contours, which necessitates the use of a support and skin remnants to cover this support. Although the use of synthetic material has been proposed in order to avoid harvesting and carving cartilage, the best long-term choice for reconstructing an ear is autologous rib cartilage. This procedure requires good understanding of the 3-dimensional architecture of the ear and learning the step-by-step construction of a harmonious framework (which with practice will be

The recent fad of high ear piercing in the pinna has led to an increased incidence of auricular chondritis, which leads to dissolution of the cartilage and residual ear deformity. The typical postpiercing chondritis deformity presents as a structural collapse of the superior helical rim, scaphal cartilage, and the adjacent antihelix. The skin envelope is usually preserved, but it may be scarred from the infectious process and from previous drainage incisions. In the present article, the authors present a systematic approach to reconstruction of these acquired ear deformities. Careful assessmen

BACKGROUND: The human tympanic membrane has reasonably good sound transmission properties and withstands high static pressure loads. Destruction of the tympanic membrane resulting from middle ear diseases or trauma may be repaired by different types of grafts. Middle ear surgery mostly uses autologous temporal fascia, cartilage, or cartilage perichondrium transplants which differ in their acoustical characteristics and mechanical strength.
METHODS: We have investigated the acoustical and mechanical properties of these materials and compared them with human tympanic membranes by constructing a

A patient with relapsing polychondritis and Sjogren's syndrome is reported. Diagnosis was confirmed by ear cartilage biopsy. Antibodies against rat costal cartilage were present in the patient's serum. Antinative collagen type II antibodies were detected using a passive hemagglutination technique and the titer grossly correlated with the clinical course. Direct immunofluorescence using the patient's ear cartilage as a target suggested that anti-collagen antibodies might play a major pathogenic role in the course of relapsing polychondritis.

Although microtia occurs in only 1:7000 to 8000 births, this major congenital ear deformity can result in significant psychological trauma for the affected child. Reconstruction of this complex deformity represents one of the greatest challenges to the reconstructive surgeon. Based on the pioneering work of Tanzer and Brent, the techniques have matured to the point that consistently good results can be obtained and many of the resultant problems associated with the deformity avoided. In classic microtia, a sausage-shaped vestige is made up of a rudimentary lobule and various additional remnant

The white-eared opossum (Didelphis albiventris) is a Neotropical marsupial that occurs in the Brazilian territory. The larynx is an important organ of vocalization in mammals, although, other laryngeal functions are more fundamental for survival of mammals than phonation. The anatomical knowledge of respiratory structures is pivotal for a better understanding of the species. Thus, this study aimed to examine the larynx of the white-eared opossum by gross anatomy, computed tomography and histological description. For this, 10 adult (six females and four males) white-eared opossums (D. albiventr

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare disease most commonly presenting as inflammation of the cartilage of the ears and nose. Auricular chondritis, with red ears resembling infectious cellulitis, is the most common initial finding. Antibodies to type II collagen in cartilage are found, and the earlobes are classically spared. Chronic disease may result in a flabby, droopy ear, cauliflower ear, or saddle nose deformity. Acute involvement of the tracheal cartilage may cause collapse of the airway with obstruction and pulmonary infections. Arthritis may be oligoarticular or polyarticular, most often

Microtia is a small, malformed external ear, which occurs at an incidence of 1-10 per 10 000 births. Autologous reconstruction using costal cartilage is the most widely accepted surgical microtia repair technique. Yet, the method involves donor-site pain and discomfort and relies on the artistic skill of the surgeon to create an aesthetic ear. This study employed novel tissue engineering techniques to overcome these limitations by developing a clinical-grade, 3D-printed biodegradable auricle scaffold that formed stable, custom-made neocartilage implants. The unique scaffold design combined str

INTRODUCTION: Little evidence is available on the natural course of osteoarthritis (OA) development and the genes that protect and predispose individuals to it. This study was designed to compare strain-dependent development of OA and its association with tissue regeneration in mice. Two recombinant inbred lines LGXSM-6 and LGXSM-33 generated from LG/J and SM/J intercross were used. Previous studies indicated that LGXSM-6 can regenerate both articular cartilage and ear hole punch while LGXSM-33 cannot.
METHODS: Transection of the medial meniscotibial ligament was performed on 10-week-old male

BACKGROUND: Total auricular reconstruction of microtia with autogenous costal cartilage poses one of the most demanding challenges in plastic and reconstructive surgery because of the unique and complex three-dimensional shape of the auricle. Attaining an ideal result of the constructed ear depends primarily on the fabricated cartilaginous ear framework. In this article, the authors discuss the essential modifications of ear framework grafting. The authors elaborate the relevant anatomical details for a harmonious ear framework and present a favorable result of the contour of the reconstructed

Reconstruction of upper eyelid defects should aim for a moveable lid with perfect corneal protection and good aesthetic quality. Numerous procedures to reconstruct large upper eyelid defects have been reported, but these methods require 2-stage procedures. A new method for reconstructing full-thickness upper eyelid defects after tumor excision in a single stage was presented in this study. The preferred technique uses excess skin as an advancement flap together with an ear cartilage graft for the lining. Reconstruction was performed with an advancement flap using excess skin and ear cartilage
