Inner ear function in children with Fabry disease.

AIM: The prevalence of hearing loss in patients with Fabry disease is still uncertain. This paper examines hearing loss in a group of young patients with Fabry disease. METHODS: A clinical ear nose and throat examination, pure-tone air and bone conduction audiometry, speech audiometry and middle ear testing (tympanometry and acoustic reflex testing) were carried out in four girls and two boys with Fabry disease (age, 7-17 years), receiving enzyme replacement therapy (ERT). RESULTS: None of the patients complained of a hearing disorder or suffered from hearing loss. Three female patients repo

Adamantiades-Behçet's disease with inner ear involvement.

Adamantiades-Behçet's disease is a chronic recurrent inflammatory disorder involving the small and large vessels. Typical loci of manifestations are the mucous membranes, skin and eyes, as well as the joints and central nervous system. Other organs are not commonly involved. We present two patients, one with ocular and the other with mucocutaneous manifestation of Adamantiades-Behçet's disease. In addition, the first patient reported three episodes of sudden hearing loss while under immunosuppressive therapy for his eye involvement. The second, therapy-naive patient complained of tinnitus in h

Bone conduction impairment in chronic ear disease.

The preoperative and postoperative bone conduction (BC) thresholds were prospectively investigated in 24 patients with chronic ear disease in the form of cholesteatoma, chronic suppurative otitis media, or adhesive otitis media. All underwent tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy. Ossicular reconstruction was performed in 14, and the remaining 10 were still awaiting second-stage ossicular reconstruction at the time of this investigation. In each group, the postoperative results were compared with the preoperative results by the paired-samples t-test. In the ossicular reconstruction group, the resul

[Forestier's disease. Ear, nose and throat manifestations].

Forestier's disease is a skeletal pathology that sometimes affects the head and neck as a consequence of hyperostotic involvement of the cervical spine. We report the case of a 73-year-old man who had progressive difficulty in swallowing solids. Gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a bony mass in the hypopharynx. The case is described and the disease manifestations in head and neck are discussed.

Autoimmune inner ear disease--a real entity?

Involvement of autoimmune mechanisms in sudden-onset, rapidly progressive, bilateral inner ear disease is supported by the following evidence: (1) the inner ear contains immune cells and mediators (immunoglobulins); (2) animal models demonstrate inner ear damage after immunization with inner ear tissue; (3) experimental autoimmune inner ear disease appears to be transferable with sensitized T cells; (4) human SNHL can occur in the context of systemic immunologic disease; (5) SNHL can be improved by immunosuppressive therapy; and (6) patients with SNHL demonstrate elevated immune responses to i

Chronic middle ear disease and cochlear implantation.

We have presented three patients with bilateral CSOM who were otherwise suitable for cochlear implantation. These patients had conventional surgical management of CSOM and were implanted after a period of 6 months through apparently healthy middle ears. However, all three had a recurrence of middle ear disease requiring further surgery, and one had a potentially life-threatening complication necessitating removal of the implant. Before considering cochlear implantation in patients with bilateral CSOM, it is essential to eradicate all disease, and radical mastoidectomy with obliteration may be

[Mucoregulatory therapy in secreting disease of the middle ear].

A controlled double-blind study was carried out vs placebo to evaluate the preventive and therapeutic efficacy of carboxymethylcysteine lysine salt (SCMC-Lys) in 40 non-adenoidectomised children (aged between 6-7 years old) with secretive otitis media and in 30 adult patients with acute inflammatory pathologies of the middle ear. The drug SCMC-Lys was administered to children at a dose of 750 mg/die in a linctus formula for 10 days and 2.7 g in a granular formula once a day for a maximum of 15 days if recovery had not already occurred. All subjects were assessed before and after treatment by m

Ear disease in patients with inflammations of Waldeyer's ring.

The etiologies of otitis media with effusion are certainly multiple but remain incompletely understood. The treatment of otitis media with effusion varies considerably. A discussion of known facts as well as debated issues underlying these differences is presented.

Factors leading to chronic middle ear disease.

In an Australian Aboriginal community, 65% of all people examined had clinical evidence of pathology in the ear drum or middle ear, but active ear disease was found mainly in children. In most people, both ears showed similar clinical changes. Clinical nutritional status and hygienic factors did not correlate with the presence of ear disease. Some families had significantly more ear disease than did others, suggesting that there is some as yet unidentified familial factor.

Exploring AAV-Mediated Gene Therapy for Inner Ear Diseases: from Preclinical Success to Clinical Potential.

Hearing loss imposes a significant global health burden and often results from genetic factors and various external influences, such as noise exposure and the use of ototoxic drugs. Recent advancements in adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated gene therapy offer promising new avenues for the treatment of inner ear diseases. Clinical trials of AAV-mediated gene therapies show impressive preliminary results, although further research is needed to evaluate the safety and long-term effects of these therapies. Preclinical AAV-mediated gene therapy is notable for its high transduction efficiency and

Prevalence and Intriguing Clinical Profiles of Autoimmune Inner Ear Diseases in Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

INTRODUCTION: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is idiopathic in 70-90% of cases with 10-30% linked to vascular injuries, viral infections, or autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED). AIED contributes to less than 1% of all hearing losses, categorized into primary, affecting only the inner ear, and secondary, associated with systemic autoimmune diseases (SAID). This study examines the prevalence and features of AIED in SSNHL in a tertiary referral center. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective study from November 2021 to December 2022 including SSNHL patients who exhibited symp

[Lymphocyte subpopulations and HLA-DR determinations in diseases of the inner ear and Bell's palsy].

Thymus lymphocytes-subpopulations (T-helper T4 and T-suppressorcells T8) were determined in inner ear diseases (e.g. sudden hearing loss, neuronitis vestibularis, Morbus Menière, Bell's Palsy) by specific monoclonal antibodies. T-cell subset ratio (T4/T8) was elevated (less than 3) in about 50% of all patients. DR-typifying was performed because of the well-known control of the immunoregulation through the class II HLA-DR antigens. There was a relative risk of 5.2 in peripheral vestibular lesion (neuronitis vestibularis). The relative risk of autoimmune diseases is found at this level.
