We describe the case of a 52-year-old man with a history of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tonsil who presented with right subacute otalgia and otorrhea. Dedicated computed tomography of the temporal bones showed opacification within the mastoid process with destruction of bony mastoid septations consistent with coalescent mastoiditis. Preoperative imaging showed no destruction or expansion of the bony eustachian tube that would indicate that a direct spread had occurred. An urgent cortical mastoidectomy was performed. Intraoperatively, a friable white mass surrounded with purulence and

INTRODUCTION: Red ear syndrome is a rare condition characterized by episodic attacks of erythema of the ear accompanied by burning ear pain. Symptoms are brought on by touch, exertion, heat or cold, stress, neck movements and washing or brushing of hair. Diagnosis and treatment of this condition are challenging. The case we report here involves a woman whose symptoms were brought on by a dietary trigger: orange juice as well as stress, causing significant physical and psychological morbidity. Avoidance of triggers resulted in symptomatic improvement.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-year-old Caucasian

BACKGROUND: Hyalinizing clear cell adenocarcinoma (HCCA) is a rare salivary gland malignancy. To our knowledge, there are no published reports of primary clear cell carcinoma of the vallecula.
METHODS: A 59-year-old man with progressive dysphagia and otalgia underwent direct laryngoscopy with biopsy of a vallecular mass. The pathology results returned as clear cell adenocarcinoma. He underwent a wide local excision for his T₂N₀M₀ stage II tumor.
RESULTS: Clear cell adenocarcinoma of the oropharynx typically presents as a painless neck mass and it can be difficult to distinguish from other cl

Many patients in primary care present with ear pain (otalgia). When the ear is the source of the pain (primary otalgia), the ear examination is usually abnormal. When the ear is not the source of the pain (secondary otalgia), the ear examination is typically normal. The cause of primary otalgia is usually apparent on examination; the most common causes are otitis media and otitis externa. The cause of secondary otalgia is often difficult to determine because the innervation of the ear is complex and there are many potential sources of referred pain. The most common causes are temporomandibular

One of mankind's most common illnesses is rhinitis, which almost regularly leads to involvement of the paranasal sinuses. Acute sinusitis is a consequence of a viral infection which, by damaging the mucosa, opens the door to bacterial superinfection. The aim of treatment is to cure the acute inflammation, re-establish normal drainage and ventilation, and prevent the development of "rhinosinugenic" complications. Acute otitis media is also preceded by viral damage to the mucosa. In children, acute otitis media is favored by the short, straight Eustachian tube, and often by adenoids. The therape

We here report the case of a storage mite, Sancassania berlesei, infestation in the external auditory canal of a 46-yr-old male. He complained of feeling a foreign body and itching in the left external auditory canal for 1 mo, with accompanying otalgia for 3 days. Considering the duration of the patient's complaint and the 8-9-day life cycle of the mite, the mites are believed to have lived in the patient's ear for more than 3 generations.

Otalgia in adults is often secondary to non-otologic pathology, particularly with normal otoscopic examination. Auriculotemporal neuralgia (ATN) is a rare and overlooked cause of secondary otalgia. We present a case of an Army veteran with chronic right otalgia and dizziness following blast-related mild traumatic brain injury who was initially diagnosed with vestibular migraine. Despite significant improvement in headache symptoms with migraine-directed preventive and abortive treatments, otalgia persisted. Auriculotemporal nerve block produced complete but short-lived pain relief, confirming

Background and aim Acute mastoiditis (AM) is a common complication of acute otitis media in children. There is currently no consensus on criteria for diagnosis. Head CT is the most frequent diagnostic tool used in the ED although the increasing awareness on the use of ionized radiations in children has questioned the use of CT imaging versus solely using clinical criteria. Our research aimed to understand if CT imaging was essential in making a diagnosis of AM. Methods We retrospectively analyzed medical records from pediatric patients who accessed our Pediatric Emergency Department (ED) betwe

One of the common causes of ear pain (Otalgia) in children is the pain felt in the temporomandibular region due to bruxism, usually accompanied by stress and anxiety. The diagnosis and treatment of anxiety at an early age will affect the future lives of children. Our aim in the study was to investigate the presence and subtypes of anxiety in children with otalgia due to bruxism. In our study, 86 children aged between 6 and 16 years old who had ear pain and whose pain and tenderness were detected in the temporomandibular joint area and 40 healthy children were included as the control group. Skull base osteomyelitis is a rare but life-threatening condition that is characterized by osteitis of the temporal bone and skull base. Although skull base osteomyelitis is recognized as a rare complication of malignant external otitis or middle ear infection, it may also occur following a mastoidectomy. We present a case of an 81-year-old woman who suffered severe otalgia with normal-looking EAC and tympanic membrane that developed six weeks following a canal wall up mastoidectomy. Otalgia was the only abnormal feature to suspect occurrence of skull base osteomyelitis.

To investigate if there is a relationship between gastroesophageal reflux and ear pain in the pediatric age group, a series of children presenting with this picture were analyzed. Infants and children are often seen in an emergency room setting because of fretfulness, irritability, and pulling on the ears. A diagnosis of otitis media is usually made, but in some cases the diagnosis may be referred otalgia secondary to gastroesophageal reflux. Six children who presented with the above picture were seen by one of the authors (W.S.G.) the following morning and noted to have a normal ear exam. The

The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of otologic symptoms and their relationship to orofacial signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD), and the effect of orofacial myofunctional therapy. The study was conducted on eight asymptomatic subjects (Group C) and 20 subjects with articular TMD, randomly distributed over two groups: one treated using orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT Group) and a control group with TMD (Group CTMD). Patient selection was based upon the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD). All subjects submitted to a clinical examination wit

Non-explosive blast injury of the ear refers to the otological trauma caused by a blow to the ear that seals the external auditory meatus. It results in a sudden increase of air pressure within the ear canal that strikes the tympanic membrane. The present study portrays the various aspects of middle and inner ear damage in 91 patients resulting from an assault we entitled a 'non-explosive blast injury' to the ear. Sixty cases were caused by a slap or a fist, 13 patients suffered sport accidents, mostly in ball games, and 18 patients were injured during swimming and water sports activities. The
