Both depressive disorders and eating disorders are multidimensional and heterogeneous disorders. This paper examines the nature of their relationship by reviewing clinical descriptive, family-genetic, treatment, and biological studies that relate to the issue. The studies confirm the prominence of depressive symptoms and depressive disorders in eating disorders. Other psychiatric syndromes which occur with less frequency, such as anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorders in anorexia nervosa, or personality disorders, anxiety disorders, and substance abuse in bulimia nervosa, also pl

Dietary prescriptions meant to reduce the risk of adult diseases could retard growth and development in infants and young children. Parents who pay attention to their infant's hunger or satiety signals will avoid under-feeding or over-feeding their infant. A useful guiding principle is that, as long as overall growth compares favourably with the standards for age, it is likely that all is well. Nutrition priorities during infancy should reflect the promotion of growth and development rather than the prevention of diseases later in life. For this reason, fat restriction is not appropriate under

The eating disorders of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are important health problems for women today. Nurses at different practice sites are in a position to assess, treat, and refer these women, depending on educational and clinical preparation. This article presents information to facilitate the role of the nurse in working with women with eating disorders. Clinical features, risk factors, and treatment options are discussed.

Sixty-seven patients with bulimia nervosa and 29 patients with anorexia nervosa completed the Impulsiveness Questionnaire and questionnaires detailing severity of eating disorder. Bulimic patients had higher impulsivity scores than anorexic patients. Bulimics with high impulsivity scores did not have more severe eating disorders than low scorers. When 39 bulimics and 25 anorexics were interviewed about other impulsive behaviour, 51% of bulimics and 28% of anorexics reported at least one other impulsive behaviour. Patients with so-called 'multi-impulsive' bulimia reported more severe eating dis

Five cases with eating disorders (one case with anorexia nervosa alone, 4 cases with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa) complicated with schizophrenia and 3 cases of bulimia nervosa complicated with schizophrenia were reported. The eating disorders and schizophrenia were diagnosed according to the diagnostic criteria of DSM-III-R. As to the type of schizophrenia, 4 patients were of an undifferentiated type and 4 cases were of a disorganized type. Regarding the prepsychotic personality, 6 of the 8 cases showed schizothyme personality traits. All the patients showed depressive symptoms which

Sixty-six consecutive infertility clinic patients were prospectively screened with the 26-item Eating Attitudes Test and a study questionnaire. Women identified as being at high risk for an eating disorder were then interviewed to confirm or refute the diagnosis. A total of 7.6% of infertility clinic women were found to suffer from anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. If eating disorders not otherwise specified were included, a total of 16.7% of infertility patients were found to suffer from an eating disorder. Among infertile women with amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea 58% had eating disorders. B

Despite our strong belief in the utility of laboratory studies of eating behavior, we also note several caveats on the data thereby obtained. First, it must be assumed that subjects' behavior is influenced by the laboratory environment and is not identical to eating behavior in a "normal" setting. Second, not all bulimic subjects who were screened for these studies actually participated, so that it is possible that the sample of patients from whom we obtained data differed in some ways from a general clinical population of women with bulimia. Nonetheless, we believe that our data provide compe

Crude mortality rates and mortality rates standardized against a British reference population have been calculated for a group of 460 consecutive patients with eating disorders seen between 1971 and 1981 in a tertiary referral centre for eating disorders. Crude mortality rates were 3.3% and 3.1% in the anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa groups respectively. Standardized rates demonstrated a six-fold increase in mortality in the anorexia nervosa group. The most common cause of death in this group was found to be suicide, with the risk of death remaining high for at least eight years after ini

INTRODUCTION: Eating disorders (EDs) often emerge in adolescence and are influenced by family factors. Parental eating attitudes, including orthorexic tendencies, may be associated with adolescent ED severity. We examined parental orthorexic tendencies, cognitive rigidity, and nutritional knowledge in relation to adolescents' ED symptoms.
METHODS: The sample comprised 59 adolescents (93.2% female; mean age = 18.34 ± 3.78 years) and their parents (36 dyads; 23 single parents). Parents completed measures of orthorexia (ORTO-R), cognitive rigidity (D-FLEX), and an ad hoc nutritional knowledge qu

The consumption of highly processed, hyperpalatable food in Western societies increases the risk of developing obesity and compulsive eating behaviors, which include food addiction (FA) and eating disorders (EDs), such as bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED). These behaviors can lead to a range of health consequences, including cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, cognitive impairments, and mental health disorders, among others. Given the evidence suggesting the involvement of the gut microbiota in regulating eating behavior, in recent years, scientists have sought to identif

OBJECTIVE: In 2015, the Academy for Eating Disorders collaborated with international patient, advocacy, and parent organizations to craft the 'Nine Truths About Eating Disorders'. This document has been translated into over 30 languages and has been distributed globally to replace outdated and erroneous stereotypes about eating disorders with factual information. In this paper, we review the state of the science supporting the 'Nine Truths'.
METHODS: The literature supporting each of the 'Nine Truths' was reviewed, summarized and richly annotated.
RESULTS: Most of the 'Nine Truths' arise fro

OBJECTIVE: A limited literature suggests an association between maternal eating disorders and child feeding difficulties, and notes maternal concern about inadvertently transmitting eating disorders. Thus, parents may be an important target for eating-disorder research to guide the development of clinical programs.
METHODS: The current study examined differences in child eating-disorder behaviors and parental feeding practices between a sample of parents (42 fathers, 130 mothers) exhibiting core features of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, or purging disorder, and a m

OBJECTIVE: To describe eating patterns in youth with restricting and binge/purge type anorexia nervosa (AN) and to examine whether eating patterns are associated with binge eating or purging behaviors.
METHOD: Participants included 160 children and adolescents (M = 15.14 ± 2.17 years) evaluated at The University of Chicago Eating Disorders Program who met criteria for DSM-5 restrictive type AN (AN-R; 75%; n = 120) or binge eating/purging type AN (AN-BE/P; 25%; n = 40). All participants completed the eating disorder examination on initial evaluation.
RESULTS: Youth with AN-R and AN-BE/P diffe

The aim of this study was to verify the relationship between eating disorders (binge eating and bulimia nervosa) and body image dissatisfaction with BMI, anorexigenic and orexigenic factors in adolescents. Thirty-two adolescents, (13 obese [BMI=36.65±5.68] and 19 non-obese [BMI=22.18±3.11]), aged between 14 and 19y, were recruited. Symptoms of eating disorders were measured by self-report questionnaires (BSQ, BITE and BES). Hormones, cytokines and neuropeptides were determined by Elisa kits (Phoenix peptide). A positive correlation was found between: leptin and BES (r=.724), BSQ (r=.705) and B

We compared nutritional knowledge, eating attitudes and chronic dietary restraint scores among 17 men (10 with bulimia nervosa and 7 with anorexia nervosa) and 50 women (20 with bulimia nervosa and 30 with anorexia nervosa), who were consecutive patients at a major treatment center in Brazil. There were no differences in nutritional knowledge and concern with food between men and women. For both genders, chronic dietary restraint scores were higher among bulimics. Men with eating disorders had better eating attitudes scores than women. Anorexic men tended to have worse eating attitudes scores

TOPIC: Binge eating is often a way of life for many women even if the diagnostic criteria for the tentative DSM-IV-TR diagnosis of binge eating disorder is not met.
METHODS: Binge eating was conceptualized as a problem in affect regulation. Affective indices of alexithymia and depression were measure with the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS), the Alexithymia-Provoked Response Questionnaire (APQR), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), respectively. This study was an exploratory study of 65 subjects, 35 of whom self-reported as eating disordered and 30 as non-eating disordered.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to be a highly effective form of treatment for patients with bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa. Issues of satiety disturbances, food restriction, and food choice are central to this form of therapy; however, ingestive behavior research that directly addresses these issues in eating disorder patients has often been overlooked by clinicians. These areas of research are reviewed and the implications of the findings for more effective CBT therapy with anorexics and bulimics are discussed.
