Echinococcosis is a zoonotic disease with global public health implications. However, its prevalence in Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, remains poorly documented. In this article, a case of human cystic echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus ortleppi (E. ortleppi) is reported in a 21-year-old man from Myanmar, who had traveled to Japan for vocational training. He presented to the study hospital in Tokyo after a chest radiograph revealed the presence of a giant cyst shadow in the right middle and lower lung fields. The cysts were excised, and echinococcosis was diagnosed on the basis of the p

Hydatid cyst disease is a zoonotic infection caused by the genus Echinococcus. Hydatid cysts are usually located in the liver or lungs whereas the brain is an unusual location. A 45-year-old male patient was diagnosed with an intracranial mass suggesting a metastasis in the frontal region shown in the cranial computed tomography (CT) scan following a cranial trauma. The histological evaluation revealed an acellular laminated lesion surrounded with reactive changes, compatible with a cuticle. These findings were evaluated in favour of a hydatid cyst caused by Echinococcus multilocularis. Alveol

Echinococcosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Echinococcus infections, and this disorder may cause fibrosis of multiple vital organs, which may further progress into cirrhosis. Early-stage hepatic fibrosis is reversible, and unraveling the mechanisms underlying hepatic fibrosis induced by Echinococcus infections is of great significance for the prevention and treatment of early-stage hepatic fibrosis. Recently, the studies pertaining to hepatic fibrosis associated with Echinococcus infections focus on cytokines and immune cells. This review summarizes the advances in the mechanisms

Alveolar echinococcosis is caused by the metacestode stage of the zoonotic parasite Echinococcus multilocularis. Current chemotherapeutic treatment options rely on benzimidazoles, which have limited curative capabilities and can cause severe side effects. Thus, novel treatment options are urgently needed. In search for novel targetable pathways we focused on the mitochondrial energy metabolism of E. multilocularis. The parasite relies hereby on two pathways: The classical oxidative phosphorylation including the electron transfer chain (ETC), and the anaerobic malate dismutation (MD). We screen

Wild carnivores are definitive hosts and potential reservoirs for the tapeworm Echinococcus sp. which can cause cystic and alveolar echinococcosis. Both are considered neglected and important food-borne pandemics. This study is the first to molecularly test Slovenian wild carnivores for Echinococcus species that can cause disease in humans. Fecal samples from 210 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), 42 wolves (Canis lupus), 39 golden jackals (Canis aureus), 18 martens (Marten sp.), 2 Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), 2 European badger (Meles meles), and 1 Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) were examined for Echinoco

Echinococcus multilocularis has been spreading through Central Eastern Europe but has not yet been reported in Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H). Recently, this parasite is confirmed in Croatia suggesting the movement of the parasite's distribution limit further south. Given that there is no surveillance or monitoring system for echinococcosis in B&H, our study was designed as a pilot study of E. multilocularis. A total of 57 red foxes originating from 24 localities all over the country were collected during the routine rabies monitoring, autopsied and examined for the presence of echinococcosis. B

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a neglected zoonotic disease with considerable economic and public health burden worldwide, particularly affecting developing countries like Ethiopia. To initiate effective prevention and control of CE, comprehensive data on the local lifecycles of the various species/genotypes of Echinococcus are needed. In the present study, conducted in eastern Ethiopia, a total of 1106 livestock animals were examined at three slaughterhouses, which resulted in combined prevalence of morphologically and molecularly confirmed CE of 8.4% (75/891) in cattle, 1.1% (1/95) in sheep,

INTRODUCTION: Cystic and alveolar echinococcosis are two potentially life-threatening diseases caused by the helminthic parasites Echinococcus granulosus or Echinococcus multilocularis, respectively. In central Europe a marked increase in incidence of both forms of echinococcosis has recently been observed.
OBJECTIVE: There is widespread uncertainty with diagnostic and treatment algorithms due to the close genetic relationship of both parasites and the similar presentation; however, since the treatment and prognosis significantly differ between the two diseases, a correct diagnosis is essenti

Echinococcus multilocularis is a tiny devastating worm that causes alveolar echinococcosis in humans. This disease mainly occurs in the liver but rarely in other organs. We report the subcutaneous encystment of E. multilocularis metacestodes in experimentally infected mice. Subcutaneous cysts had remarkably fewer protoscoleces (2.05 ± 1.47, n = 20) and small irregular-shape vesicles (ISVs) in the lumen as compared to liver cysts (69.6 ± 55.65, n = 10). Moreover, abnormal development of a protoscolex was also observed in a subcutaneous cyst. The results suggest that subcutaneous encystment may

The fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis is the causative agent of alveolar echinococcosis, a severe zoonotic disease that may be fatal if untreated. A broad spectrum of mammalian species may be accidentally infected even in captivity. In April 2011, liver lesions due to E. multilocularis were observed during the necropsy of a captive-born nutria (Myocastor coypus) in a French wildlife park, leading to initiation of a study to survey the parasite's presence in the park. A comparable environmental contamination with fox's feces infected by E. multilocularis was reported inside (17.8%) and o

Echinococcosis is a serious helminthic zoonosis in humans, livestock and wildlife. The pathogenic organisms are members of the genus Echinococcus (Cestoda: Taeniidae). Life cycles of Echinococcus spp. are consistently dependent on predator-prey association between two obligate mammalian hosts. Carnivores (canids and felids) serve as definitive hosts for adult tapeworms and their herbivore prey (ungulates, rodents and lagomorphs) as intermediate hosts for metacestode larvae. Humans are involved as an accidental host for metacestode infections. The metacestodes develop in various internal organs

The geographic and host distribution, prevalence and genotypes of Echinococcus canadensis in wild ungulates in Canada are described to better understand the significance for wildlife and public health. We observed E. canadensis in 10.5% (11/105) of wild elk (wapiti; Cervus canadensis) in Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba, examined at necropsy, over two consecutive years (2010-2011). Molecular characterization of hydatid cyst material from these elk, as well as three other intermediate wildlife host species, was based on sequence of a 470 bp region of the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (NAD

The present study was carried out during the period from August 2009 to July 2010. The purpose of this study was to identify the genotype of donkeys' echinococcosis in one of the Egyptian governorates. On post-mortem inspection taking place at the zoo of Beni-Suef, Egypt, a total number of 145 donkeys were examined for the presence of hydatid cysts. Ten of these donkeys were found to be infected by hydatid cysts; and location, number and fertility of cysts found were determined. The liver was the predominant site of infection. Molecular identification of these cystic echinococcosis isolates, b

Echinococcus alveolaris (E. alveolaris) (multi-localaris) is a parasitic agent that commonly affects the liver and poses as a solid mass. In contrast to Echnicoccus granulosus, E. alveolaris tends to invade adjacent structures rather than displace and compress them. Haematogenous dissemination to other organs such as the lungs, brain, or bone is rare. In this case, we report on a 34-year old woman with a history of liver segmentectomy due to E. alveolaris infestation and the disease disseminated to the lungs. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed multiple opacities and mixe

We describe the case of a 14-year-old boy of Turkish origin, presenting with anaphylactic shock after a minor abdominal trauma. Further investigations revealed a hepatic Echinococcal cyst without evidence of rupture. Anti-helminthic therapy was administered. Because of aggravating symptoms and recurrent anaphylaxis, surgical excision was performed. Intra-operative, a rupture into the biliary tree was seen. After surgery, the anaphylactic symptoms disappeared and the patient recovered. This case-report supports the fact that anaphylactic shock can be the only presentation of a hydatid cyst. Mic

The liver is the most commonly involved organ in the body by cystic echinococcosis (CE) secondary to infection with Echinococcus granulosus. In this article, the authors discuss the classification, recent advances in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging for the diagnosis of hepatic CE, and approaches for management of hepatic CE using five therapeutic options that include: antihelminthic chemotherapy, surgery, percutaneous treatment, endoscopic approach, and the "watch and wait" approach.

Investigations were undertaken to determine the genotypes of the parasite Echinococcus granulosus that were present in livestock animals on the island of Sardinia. Liver, lung, and spleen samples were obtained from 770 sheep, 229 cattle, and 277 pigs slaughtered in Sardinia between January 2003 and April 2005, and the number and fertility of hydatid cysts were determined. Protoscoleces and/or germinal layer were collected from individual cysts, DNA was extracted from 91 samples, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) methods were used for id

As exemplified by "aborted" calcified liver lesions commonly found in patients from endemic areas, Echinococcus multilocularis metacestodes develop only in a minority of individuals exposed to infection with the papasite. Clinical research has disclosed some aspects of the survival strategy of E. multilocularis in human hosts. Clinical observations in liver transplantation and AIDS suggest that suppression of cellular/Th1-related immunity increases disease severity. Most of the studies have stressed a role for CD8+ T cells and for Interleukin-10 in the development of tolerance. A spontaneous s
