Although protective effects of the cochlea's efferent feedback pathways have been well documented, prior work has focused on hair cell damage and cochlear threshold elevation and, correspondingly, on the high sound pressure levels (>100 dB SPL) necessary to produce them. Here we explore the noise-induced loss of cochlear neurons that occurs with lower-intensity exposures and in the absence of permanent threshold shifts. Using confocal microscopy to count synapses between hair cells and cochlear nerve fibers, and using measurement of auditory brainstem responses and otoacoustic emissions to ass

Autonomic nerves in most mammalian species mediate both contractions and relaxations of airway smooth muscle. Cholinergic-parasympathetic nerves mediate contractions, whereas adrenergic-sympathetic and/or noncholinergic parasympathetic nerves mediate relaxations. Sympathetic-adrenergic innervation of human airway smooth muscle is sparse or nonexistent based on histological analyses and plays little or no role in regulating airway caliber. Rather, in humans and in many other species, postganglionic noncholinergic parasympathetic nerves provide the only relaxant innervation of airway smooth musc

The effects of acupuncture-like stimulation of the various segmental areas on gastric motility were examined in anesthetized rats. An acupuncture needle (diameter 340 microns) was inserted into the skin and underlying muscles at a depth of 4-5 mm and was twisted right and left once every second for 60 s. Gastric motility in the pyloric region was measured with the balloon method. Gastric motility was inhibited by acupuncture-like stimulation applied to the abdomen and lower chest region, and was often excited when the limbs were stimulated, in all cases in which stimuli were delivered to the s

Central nervous tumors are the leading cause of death from cancer in the pediatric population. Advances in care for pediatric neuro-oncology patients have led to improved survival rates. As survivorship increases, care of the sequelae of the tumor and its treatment become more important for long-term quality of life. A significant portion of the brain is involved in vision. Pediatric brain tumors can distort, damage, and destroy portions of the brain involved in both the afferent and efferent vision pathways. This interruption of normal visual pathways can lead to permanent vision loss or othe

The cochlear nerve includes a small population of unmyelinated sensory fibers connecting outer hair cells to the brain. The functional role of these type II afferent neurons is controversial, because neurophysiological data are sparse. A recent study (Froud et al., 2015) reported that targeted deletion of peripherin, a type of neurofilament, eliminated type II afferents and inactivated efferent feedback to the outer hair cells, thereby suggesting that type II afferents were the sensory drive to this sound-evoked, negative-feedback reflex, the olivocochlear pathway. Here, we re-evaluated the co

Neurophysiological methods which allow to identify objectively lesions of the efferent cortico-spinal pathways in humans are with the exception of transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the motor cortex nor available. Long latency EMG responses from leg muscles are mediated by a "transcortical loop" and offer the possibility to detect in combination with sensory evoked potentials lesions both of the afferent proprioceptive and the efferent motor pathways. Subjects stood on a platform which was rotated toe-up (50 degrees/s, 4 degrees) around the axis of the ankle joint. This lead to two EMG r

The auditory efferent nerve is a feedback pathway that originates in the brainstem and projects to the inner ear. Although the anatomy and physiology of efferents have been rather thoroughly described, their functional roles in auditory perception are still not clear. Here, we report data in six human subjects who had undergone vestibular neurectomy, during which their efferent nerves were also presumably severed. The surgery had alleviated these subjects' vertigo but also resulted in mild to moderate hearing loss. We designed our experiments with a focus on the possible role of efferents in a

Auditory experience plays a critical role in hearing development. Developmental auditory deprivation because of otitis media, a common childhood disease, produces long-standing changes in the central auditory system, even after the middle ear pathology is resolved. The effects of sound deprivation because of otitis media have been mostly studied in the ascending auditory system but remain to be examined in the descending pathway that runs from the auditory cortex to the cochlea via the brainstem. Alterations in the efferent neural system could be important because the descending olivocochlear

The tonsil of the soft palate, the predominant lymphoid tissue of the oropharynx in pigs, is important especially in initiating immune responses against antigenic material entering the mouth. The aim of this work was to describe the lymphatic pathways from the tonsils of the soft palate of pigs through lymph nodes of the head to the bloodstream. This was achieved by gross dissection, and by using Evans' Blue dye and Microfil casts. Efferent lymphatic vessels from the tonsil coalesce to form vessels which convey lymph to the primary nodes, the mandibular and medial retropharyngeal, and thence t

There currently are no standardized protocols to evaluate auditory efferent function in humans. Typical tests use broadband noise to activate the efferents, but only test the contralateral efferent pathway, risk activating the middle ear muscle reflex (MEMR), and are laborious for clinical use. In an attempt to develop a clinical test of bilateral auditory efferent function, we have designed a method that uses clicks to evoke efferent activity, obtain click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (CEOAEs), and monitor MEMR. This allows for near-simultaneous estimation of cochlear and efferent function. I

OBJECTIVE: The medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex provides efferent feedback from the brainstem to cochlear outer hair cells. Physiologic studies have demonstrated that the MOC reflex is involved in "unmasking" of signals-in-noise at the level of the auditory nerve; however, its functional importance in human hearing remains unclear.
DESIGN: This study examined relationships between pre-neural measurements of MOC reflex strength (click-evoked otoacoustic emission inhibition; CEOAE) and neural measurements of speech-in-noise encoding (speech frequency following response; sFFR) in four condition

Cerebellum is highly connected with the contralateral cerebral cortex. So far, the motor deficits observed in acute focal cerebellar lesions in human have been mainly explained on the basis of a disruption of the cerebello-thalamo-cortical projections. Cerebellar circuits have also numerous anatomical and functional interactions with brainstem nuclei and projects also directly to the spinal cord. Cerebellar lesions alter the excitability of peripheral motor axons as demonstrated by peripheral motor threshold-tracking techniques in cerebellar stroke. The biophysical changes are correlated with

The functional organization of the main human brainstem centers and circuits are described as revealed in post-mortem material with high-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) acquired at ultra-high magnetic field 7 T. The description is complemented with a conventional in vivo fiber tracking study of the descending motor pathways. This type of neuroanatomic depiction of nuclei and nerve tracts at very high spatial resolution opens new possibilities to analyze the fine structure and circuits of the human br

This tribute article to Professor James P. Lund stems from 6 of the presentations delivered at the July 1, 2008, symposium that honored 3 "giants" in orofacial neuroscience: B. J. Sessle, A. G. Hannam, and J. P. Lund. It was noted that soon after his training as a dentist in Australia, Jim Lund became interested in research. At the time he decided to do a PhD, there was a lot of discussion about how rhythmic movements were programmed. The early belief, based on Sherrington's studies of motor systems, was that these movements were simply an alternating series of reflexes. In the late 1960s and

The organization of embryonic efferent cranial nerves is addressed here by interspecies comparison of segmentally patterned neuromeres, efferent neuronal populations and early mesodermal sources of target muscles. The segmental constancy of these three structural patterns is evaluated for elasmobranch, teleost, reptile, bird and mammal embryos and compared with the segmentally restricted expression patterns of Hox genes. A conserved series of hindbrain neuroepithelial segments (rhombomeres) is present in all of these taxa. Dye-labeling experiments demonstrate that the segmental locations of ef

In the frog, identical orienting deficits, involving a failure to turn toward stimuli in the ipsilateral hemifield, can be produced by small white matter lesions either in the caudal mesencephalon (Kostyk and Grobstein, 1987a) or in the caudal medulla (Masino and Grobstein, 1989). These findings suggest that descending turn signals may run uninterrupted from the midbrain to the spinal cord, and that something other than tectospinal axons may carry such signals. We here report studies to determine whether there is a tecto-recipient structure whose axons pass through the known critical lesion si

In the present study, the activation of the nociceptive dorsal horn neurons in rats by iontophoretic substance P (SP) has been observed. Thus, the role of SP in spinal nociception is further identified. In addition, the inhibitory effects of iontophoretic SP on nociceptive response (C response) of dorsal horn neurons can also be observed even in rats that have undergone dorsal half transection of spinal cord. These inhibitory effects can be partially blocked by pretreatment with iontophoretic bicuculline but not by naloxone. It indicates that the SP-induced inhibitory effects on the nociceptiv

As it was still not possible to elucidate sufficiently the function of the efferent acoustic system or the tractus olivocochlearis (OCB), and as it is still not known whether this system possibly has the function of providing protection against noise-induced trauma, the vestibular nerve was severed in the guinea pig, and the threshold shift was compared with that of a control group. On day 8 after exposure to noise, both the temporary threshold shift (TTS) and the permanent threshold shift (PTS) were significantly lower in the control group than in the group with severed OCB. Thus, it does ind

The glossopharyngeal nerve and the vagus nerve are mixed nerves containing sensory, gustatory, motor and autonomous fibers (parasympathetic). The glossopharyngeal nerve has mainly visceral afferent fibers from the tongue and pharynx, gustatory fibers from the posterior third of the tongue, parasympathetic afferent fibers from carotid sinus and carotid glomus, parasympathetic efferent fibers for the parotid gland and motor fibers for the muscles of the pharynx. The vagus nerve contains mostly visceral afferent fibers from laryngeal, intrathoracic and abdominal organs, parasympathetic efferent f
