[Neonatal therapeutic hypothermia: amplitude-integrated electroencephalography to confirm the indication].

Moderate hypothermia therapy (HT) after perinatal asphyxia of the newborn has clearly demonstrated its efficacy in reducing both mortality and long-term neurosensory sequelae. HT has now been introduced in many developed countries as a standard of care for term infants meeting the entry criteria for therapeutic cooling. However, this new therapy is only effective in case of an acute perinatal hypoxic-ischemic event. Since a number of potentially deleterious complications have been described during cooling, a strict evaluation of the newborn's status is mandatory. To help clinicians reliably se

Amplitude-integrated electroencephalography in preterm infants with cystic periventricular leukomalacia.

AIM: This study aimed to assess amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) findings in preterm infants with cystic periventricular leukomalacia (cPVL) in the early neonatal period. METHODS: We analyzed five infants with cPVL, whose gestational age was between 27 and 30 weeks, and 15 matched control infants. Two-channel (C3-O1 and C4-O2) aEEG was obtained by digital conversion from a conventional electroencephalogram, which was recorded at days 0-5, 6-13, and 21-34 in each infant. We evaluated the averaged two-channel values of several measurements using visual and quantitative analyse

Electroencephalography signals in a female Fragile X Syndrome mouse model.

BACKGROUND: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the leading monogenic cause of Autism. No broadly effective support option currently exists for FXS, and drug development has suffered many failures in clinical trials based on promising preclinical findings. Thus, effective translational biomarkers of treatment outcomes are needed. Recently, electroencephalography (EEG) has been proposed as a translational biomarker in FXS. Recent years have seen an exciting emergence of novel EEG signal analyses from FXS patients. However, there is a notable gap in corresponding analyses conducted on animal models of t

Multidomain Electroencephalography Biomarker Fusion for Machine Learning-Based Dementia Classification.

Electroencephalography (EEG) has been investigated as a noninvasive approach for characterizing brain activity in neurodegenerative conditions. This study evaluated whether multidomain EEG biomarkers could distinguish Alzheimer's disease (AD), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and healthy controls (HC). The publicly available dataset contained resting-state, eyes-closed EEG recordings from 88 participants, including 36 with AD, 23 with FTD, and 29 healthy controls. Multidomain EEG biomarkers and demographic features were extracted for machine learning classification. The EEG-derived features incl

Decoding motor imagery related to major mimetic muscles from electroencephalography.

BACKGROUND: Functional and aesthetic deficits in individuals with facial nerve paralysis (FNP) significantly impair their quality of life. By decoding motor intentions and controlling rehabilitation devices, motor imagery (MI)-based brain-computer interfaces can improve outcomes in people with peripheral paralysis. However, the electroencephalography (EEG) features underlying different facial MIs and their decodability remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the feasibility of decoding facial MIs related to major mimetic muscles and to explore suitable decoding strategies. METHODS: Fol

Linear predictive coding electroencephalography algorithms predict mortality in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Mortality is increased in Parkinson's disease (PD) and is difficult to predict because of its heterogeneity and the availability of few reliable prognostic markers. OBJECTIVES: We used electroencephalography (EEG) recordings and the Linear Predictive Coding EEG Algorithm for PD (LEAPD) to classify 3-year mortality status and correlate LEAPD indices with time to death. METHODS: 2-minutes resting-state EEG from 94 PD patients was used for binary classification of 3-year mortality status (22 deceased). Single-channel classification using a balanced dataset of 44 was performed using

Electroencephalography-based characteristics of cognitive domain impairments in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive impairment (CI) is a common non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). This study explores qEEG patterns associated with distinct cognitive domains to evaluate the potential of qEEG analysis. METHODS: The study included 64 idiopathic PD patients, divided into three groups based on their performance in five cognitive domains. Functional connectivity of the brain network was evaluated by calculating the coherence from the resting state EEG. RESULTS: We identified early CI markers in verbal fluency, visuospatial, and memory domains. Key findings could be considered i

Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease and Frontotemporal Dementia From Electroencephalography Signals.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are the most burdensome neurodegenerative disorders in older populations as they pose significant challenges because of subtle cognitive decline in the initial stages. This study proposes a novel approach to distinguishing AD, FTD, and cognitively normal (CN) subjects using electroencephalography (EEG) time-domain analysis through Hjorth parameters (Activity, Mobility, and Complexity). By exploring various window lengths and moving lengths to determine the optimal segment where dementia features are most pronounced, the proposed method

Double Sparse Dictionary-Based Electroencephalography Channel Selection for Depression Analysis.

To address channel redundancy and high computational complexity in high-density electroencephalography (EEG) for depression (DP) analysis, this study proposes an elastic net-based double sparse dictionary channel selection (EN-DSDCS) method, aimed at screening core EEG channels and analyzing abnormal topological changes in the brain functional network (BFN) of DP patients. An improved coarse-graining method is proposed to reconstruct EEG signals, calculate their multi-scale permutation entropy (MSPE), and construct an MSPE matrix that characterizes signal complexity. Based on this, a double sp

Long-Range Temporal Correlations in Electroencephalography for Parkinson's Disease Progression.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) present progressive deterioration in both motor and non-motor manifestations. However, the absence of clinical biomarkers for disease progression hinders clinicians from tailoring treatment strategies effectively. OBJECTIVES: To identify electroencephalography (EEG) biomarker that can track disease progression in PD. METHODS: A total of 116 patients with PD were initially enrolled, whereas 63 completed 2-year follow-up evaluation. Fifty-eight age- and sex-matched healthy individuals were recruited as the control group. All participants under

Pro-Con Debate: Electroencephalography-Guided Anesthesia for Reducing Postoperative Delirium.

Postoperative delirium (POD) has significant implications on morbidity, mortality, and health care expenditures. Monitoring electroencephalography (EEG) to adjust anesthetic management has gained interest as a strategy to mitigate POD. In this Pro-Con commentary article, the pro side supports the use of EEG to reduce POD, citing an empiric reduction in POD with processed EEG (pEEG)-guided general anesthesia found in several studies and recent meta-analysis. The Electroencephalography Guidance of Anesthesia to Alleviate Geriatric Syndromes (ENGAGES) trial is the exception to this, and issues wi

Immediate Postoperative Electroencephalography Monitoring in Pediatric Moyamoya Disease and Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Moyamoya disease and syndrome are progressive steno-occlusive cerebrovascular diseases that manifest clinically with ischemic episodes. There is evidence for the use of electroencephalography (EEG) in preoperative and long-term postoperative evaluation of these patients, as well as in the intraoperative period to monitor for changes correlated with perioperative ischemic events. However, the utility of EEG in the immediate postprocedure time period has not previously been described. METHODS: We review six patients who underwent pial synangiosis from 2017 to 2019. EEGs from the pre

Acute-phase electroencephalography for an infantile atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor.

BACKGROUND: Primary brain tumor is a leading cause of death in cancer-bearing children. Acutely progressive patterns of electroencephalography (EEG) remain to be investigated for children with rapidly growing brain tumors. CASE REPORT: A 14-month-old boy was transferred to our department for prolonged seizures and unrecovered consciousness on his fifth day of illness. The EEG recording on admission showed highly disorganized background activity with high-voltage rhythmic delta waves. Serial EEG monitoring revealed a rapid transition of the background activity to the suppression-burst pattern,

Does the first hour of continuous electroencephalography predict neonatal seizures?

OBJECTIVE: Prolonged continuous video-electroencephalography (cEEG) is recommended for neonates at risk of seizures. The cost and expertise required to provide a real-time response to detected seizures often limits its utility. We hypothesised that the first hour of cEEG could predict subsequent seizures. DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective multicentre diagnostic accuracy study. PATIENTS: 266 term neonates at risk of seizure or with suspected seizures. INTERVENTION: The first hour of cEEG was graded by expert and novice interpreters as normal, mildly, moderately or severely abnormal; seizures

Association of Sleep Electroencephalography-Based Brain Age Index With Dementia.

IMPORTANCE: Dementia is an increasing cause of disability and loss of independence in the elderly population yet remains largely underdiagnosed. A biomarker for dementia that can identify individuals with or at risk for developing dementia may help close this diagnostic gap. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between a sleep electroencephalography-based brain age index (BAI), the difference between chronological age and brain age estimated using the sleep electroencephalogram, and dementia. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study of 9834 polysomn
