Pharmacogenomic knowledge and awareness among diverse patients treated with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors.

We developed novel electronic phenotyping algorithms for the BioMe biobank data, which accurately identified angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEi)-induced angioedema cases and controls. A survey was mailed to all 1075 patients and 91 were returned. Over a third reported that prescribing physicians had not discussed with them the concepts of interindividual drug response variability or adverse event risk, and 73% of patients were previously unaware of pharmacogenomics; however, most patients were interested in having pharmacogenomic testing. Moreover, 67% of patients indicated that pha

Return of genome-informed risk-assessment results for common conditions to 23,840 adults and children: An eMERGE network study.

Incorporating genetic risk factors to assess health risk and inform screening is critical for advancing precision medicine. The Electronic Medical Records and Genomics (eMERGE) Network conducted a large-scale study returning genome-informed risk assessments (GIRAs) to 23,840 participants (ages 3-75) across ten clinical sites. Risk for 11 common conditions was assessed using polygenic risk scores (PRSs), monogenic variants, and family history, with results placed in the electronic health record and returned to participants. Non-high-risk and family history-only high-risk results were delivered

Assessing medication safety culture in Norwegian pediatric wards: a first nationwide survey.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Health information technologies are widely used in hospitals to reduce the risk of medication errors. However, evidence on their impact on medication management and patient safety in pediatric settings remains limited. The aim of this study was to assess safety culture in medication management and medication error reporting in pediatric wards and to identify areas for improvement. METHOD: A survey was developed and presented on the annual meeting of Medicines for Children Network, Norway, attended by 80 physicians, pharmacists, and nurses. Following adjustments, the quest

Internet-based treatment of social phobia: a randomized controlled trial comparing unguided with two types of guided self-help.

Internet-based self-help for social phobia with minimal therapist support via email have shown efficacy in several controlled trials by independent research teams. The role and necessity of therapist guidance is, however, still largely unclear. The present study compared the benefits of a 10-week web-based unguided self-help treatment for social phobia with the same intervention complemented with minimal, although weekly, therapist support via email. Further, a third treatment arm was included, in which the level of support was flexibly stepped up, from no support to email or telephone contact

Assessment of hospital disaster preparedness for the 2010 FIFA World Cup using an internet-based, long-distance tabletop drill.

INTRODUCTION: The State University of New York at Downstate (SUNY) conducted a web-based long-distance tabletop drill (LDTT) designed to identify vulnerabilities in safety, security, communications, supplies, incident management, and surge capacity for a number of hospitals preceding the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The tabletop drill simulated a stampede and crush-type disaster at the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town, South Africa in anticipation of 2010 FIFA World Cup. The LDTT, entitled "Western Cape-Abilities", was conducted between May and September 2009, and encompassed nine hospitals in the Wes

Pandemic influenza: antiviral preparedness and health care workers.

OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study was to determine the preparedness for pandemic influenza of hospitals, in terms of amount of antiviral drugs on hand and employee vaccination rates, in the Finger Lakes region (FLR) of western New York. METHODS: A survey of the 17 FLR hospitals was conducted via e-mail during the period of June 2007 to August 2007. RESULTS: A total of 13 of 17 hospitals responded for a response rate of 76.5%. Only 23.1% of responding hospitals stockpile antiviral drugs. Vaccination rates for personnel with patient contact ranged from 36.8% to 76.1%. CONCLUSION

Shyness 3: randomized controlled trial of guided versus unguided Internet-based CBT for social phobia.

OBJECTIVE: In two previous randomized controlled trials Titov et al. demonstrated significant benefit from an Internet- and email-based treatment programme for social phobia. The present study (Shyness 3) explores whether participants are able to complete this programme independently. METHOD: A total of 98 individuals with social phobia were randomly assigned to a clinician-assisted computerized cognitive behavioural treatment (CaCCBT) group, a self-guided computerized CBT (CCBT) group, or to a waitlist control group. CaCCBT group participants completed the usual Shyness programme consisting

Quality Initiative to Increase Delivery of Adolescent Hospital-Based Reproductive Health Care.

OBJECTIVES: Hospitals are an important nontraditional setting in which to address adolescent reproductive health. However, opportunities for intervention are frequently missed, especially for boys and patients hospitalized for noningestion complaints. Our global aim was to increase delivery of reproductive health care to adolescents hospitalized through our children's hospital Pediatric Hospital Medicine service. METHODS: We performed 2 quality improvement intervention cycles: (1) provider education and monthly reminder e-mails and (2) an automated electronic health record (EHR) adolescent hi
