Morphohistometric evaluation of the embryological development of the heart in chicks.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the morphohistometric development of the chick heart at certain incubation periods using quantitative methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the study, the hearts of 24 Babcock White Leghorn chicks, six each from the 10th, 13th, 16th and 21st days of incubation, were used. The hearts were weighed, and their diameters were measured with a digital caliper. Paraffin blocks of heart tissue were then prepared, and serial sections were taken at 5 μm and 10 μm thickness, stained with Crossmon's triple staining method and photographed under a microsco

The Anatomy and Embryology of Tetralogy of Fallot With Pulmonary Atresia.

In this review, we approach the main morphologic and developmental aspects of the congenital cardiovascular malformation known as tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia. It is recognized that pulmonary atresia associated with a deficient ventricular septation can occur in several situations. However, the tetralogy presentation in particular, with frequent but not invariable concomitance of systemic-to-pulmonary collateral arteries supplying the lungs entirely or in part, poses surgical challenges. The variations in the morphology of such collateral arteries and the intracardiac anatomy are

Peritoneal carcinomatosis: A malignant disease with an embryological origin?

INTRODUCTION: In 1931, Simpson et al. coined the term "peritoneal carcinomatosis" to describe the regional spread of ovarian tumors as localized or extended with involvement of the peritoneal serous membrane and neighboring anatomical structures. Research into the origin of peritoneal carcinomatosis is based on two phases in a woman's life: EMBRYO DEVELOPMENT: During week 3, the bilaminar disc becomes a trilaminar disc called the mesoderm. Inside the lateral plate mesoderm, the coelomic cavity is divided into 2 layers: the parietal (somatic) mesoderm, which gives rise to the parietal peritoneu

Holoprosencephaly: a survey of the entity, with embryology and fetal imaging.

Structural malformations of the brain are an important cause of childhood mortality and morbidity, with the latter having long-term financial and psychosocial implications for the affected child and family. Holoprosencephaly (HPE) is a severe brain malformation characterized by abnormal cleavage of the prosencephalon in the 5th gestational week. Aprosencephaly and atelencephaly occur earlier because of failure in the formation of the prosencephalon and telencephalon, respectively. The HPE holoprosencephaly spectrum classically includes alobar, semilobar, and lobar forms, although there are no

A new embryological theory of the pancreatic duct system.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To clarify the anatomy of the pancreatic duct system and to investigate its embryology. METHODS: We reviewed pancreatograms of 256 patients with a normal pancreatic head and 36 cases of complete pancreas divisum. RESULTS: Accessory pancreatograms were divided into two patterns. The long-type accessory pancreatic duct (APD) forms a straight line and joins the main pancreatic duct (MPD) at the neck portion of the pancreas. The short-type APD joins the MPD near its first inferior branch. The short-type APD is less likely to have a long inferior branch arising from the APD. The

The embryologic origin of ventral body wall defects.

Ventral body wall defects include ectopia cordis, bladder exstrophy, and the abdominal wall malformations gastroschisis and omphalocele. The etiology of ectopia cordis, gastroschisis, and bladder exstrophy is not known, but they may be linked to abnormalities in the lateral body wall folds responsible for closing the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic portions of the ventral body wall. These folds form in the fourth week (postfertilization) of development as a combination of the parietal layer of lateral plate mesoderm and overlying ectoderm and must move ventrally to meet in the midline. There a

Genetics and embryological mechanisms of congenital heart diseases.

Developmental genetics of congenital heart diseases has evolved from analysis of embryo sections towards molecular genetics of cardiac morphogenesis with a dynamic view of cardiac development. Lineage analysis, transgenic animal models and retrospective clonal analysis of the developing heart led to identification of different cardiac lineages and their respective roles. Genetics of congenital heart diseases has also changed from formal genetic analysis of familial recurrences or population based analysis to screening for mutations in candidates genes identified in animal models. Based on thes

[Atrial septal defect. A morphopathological and embryological study].

To contribute to a better understanding of the morphopathology of atrial septal defects (ASD), we describe and classify topographically a series of hearts obtained from necropsies. We performed an anatomo-embryological correlation to gain insight on the pathogenesis of this type of congenital heart disease. Seventy-one hearts with ASD and twenty-three normal hearts with patent foramen ovale from the collection at the Instituto Nacional de Cardiologia lgnacio Chavez were studied morphologically; segmental sequential analysis was used. The topography of the interatrial septum was determined on t

Ectopic stapes: a case report with embryologic correlations.

A case report of unilateral congenital stapes misplacement revealed by computed tomography is presented. In addition to this malformation, the malleus was synostosed to the middle ear roof. This kind of stapes ectopia has not been described previously. We have analyzed the malformative pattern in the light of normal and teratologic development of the stapes. In a teratologic model in which retinoic acid is administered to pregnant mice, we have observed an ectopic stapes primordium independent of the otic capsule. We discuss the possible pathogenesis of this abnormality in terms of the genetic

Fabricating a face: the essence of embryology in the dental curriculum.

The current explosive growth in developmental biology, fuelled by the almost completed sequencing of the human genome, is bound to have a profound impact upon the practice of medicine and dentistry in the twenty-first century. No other discipline more accurately reflects this impact than embryology, which combines the basic and clinical sciences of genetics, ontogeny, phylogeny, teratology, and syndromology into the essence of modern medical and dental practice. The advent of in vitro fertilization, chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, prenatal ultrasonography, intrauterine surgery, and s

Systemic venous abnormalities: embryologic and echocardiographic considerations.

The echocardiographic diagnosis of systemic venous anomalies often is rendered difficult by the variety of lesions that exist. An understanding of the embryologic processes that result in these lesions is essential for accurate identification, since these lesions often are not obvious on routine echocardiographic examination. Standard echocardiographic views may demonstrate some lesions, whereas many require modified views to outline the abnormal systemic venous anatomy. This paper reviews the basic embryologic processes of the development of the normal and abnormal systemic venous system, as

Genetic regulation of the embryology of the pituitary gland and somatotrophs.

Extrinsic and intrinsic signaling gradients determine expression patterns of pituitary-specific factors in the developing anterior pituitary gland. The temporal and spatial relations of these developmental factors are required for the determination of each of the pituitary cell lineages. Rpx is required for early differentiation of the anterior pituitary. The determination of the somatotroph cell line is dependent on the transcription factors Lhx3, Prop-1, and Pit-1. Pit-1 also plays a role in the activation and regulation of the somatotroph gene product, GH. Additional factors such as CREB an

Migration of intradural epidermoid matrix: embryologic implications.

The migratory behavior of acquired cholesteatoma matrices (those arising from the tympanic membrane) has been described previously. This tissue is derived embryologically from the first branchial groove and represents the only migratory epithelium arising from the branchial groove system. If the matrix from a cerebellopontine angle (CPA) epidermoid tumor exhibits migratory behavior similar to that of acquired cholesteatomas, a first branchial groove site of origin for CPA epidermoids would be supported. Intradural CPA epidermoid cells were grown in alpha-minimum essential medium. The cultures

Perspectives on the use of the baboon in embryology and teratology research.

This paper summarizes the developmental stages of the baboon during the period of organ formation and provides comparative information for other primates, including the human. Special attention is directed to the early development of the nervous system, eye, ear and nose/palate. The similarity in development of these structures with humans indicates that the baboon is a suitable model for studies of normal and abnormal neurological development. Spontaneous prenatal loss rates in the baboon (2.4-11.2%) are slightly lower than those reported in rhesus and cynomologus monkeys. The baboon, in addi

Amino acid concentrations in human embryological fluids.

The concentrations of amino acids in samples of coelomic fluid (n = 15), amniotic fluid (n = 9) and maternal serum (n = 15) obtained from normal pregnancies between 7 and 12 weeks of gestation were measured using reversed-phase chromatography with pre-column derivatization. The total molar concentration of the 18 amino acids measured was 2.3 times higher in coelomic fluid than in maternal serum. All amino acids except serine and tryptophan were present in significantly higher concentrations in coelomic fluid than in maternal serum. Significant correlations between maternal serum and coelomic f

MR of the caudal regression syndrome: embryologic implications.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the spectrum of developmental anomalies observed in patients with the caudal regression syndrome and relate them to the pathogenesis of this syndrome. METHODS: Nineteen children with caudal regression were investigated with MR. RESULTS: The level of vertebral agenesis varied from T-11 to S-5. In 9 of the 19 children the characteristic high-ending wedge-shaped cord terminus was observed. A separation of the anterior and posterior spinal roots of the cauda equina was observed in 9 patients. Four patients had a tethered spinal cord, in 1 in combination with a wedge-shaped c

[Odontogenic and nonodontogenic epithelial rests. Embryological origin].

The close examination of the central osseous and/or parosteal lesions of the jaws must be reconducted to the study of the main fundamental embryonal processes that take place in the primordial stomodeus. Some pathological lesions can arise from the rests that survive after the disgregation of various odontogenic epithelial structures destined to disappear with growth: the epithelial root sheath, the dental lamina and the external epithelium of the enamel organ. Some osseous lesions can also originate from the nonodontogenic epithelial rests: this tissue comes from the uncompleted obliteration

Cerebro-craniofacial and craniofacial malformations: an embryological analysis.

A macro- and/or microscopical study on the normal and abnormal development of the forebrain with the eyes, nose, and cranium, was performed in 139 mouse embryos, 120 normal and 19 abnormal human embryos and fetuses, and in about 2,300 human skulls. The results suggest that from the embryological point of view, a distinction should be made between facial defects involving the brain and/or the neural elements of the eyes, i.e., the cerebro-craniofacial dysplasias, and malformations of the face and cranium only, called the craniofacial dysplasias. Both groups can be subdivided into early or prima

Unusual sacrococcygeal embryologic malformations with cutaneous manifestations.

Two unusual sacrococcygeal neuroepithelial heterotopias manifested as masses associated with cutaneous signs. In a 13-month-old infant, a cystic coccygeal medullary vestige was associated with a midline epidermal nevus. In another patient, a lipomeningocele with neuroepithelial heterotopia manifested as a skin tag and mass in the right buttock. In both cases, the malformations probably resulted from abnormal canalization and retrograde differentiation of the distal neural tube. Cystic coccygeal medullary vestige results from dilation of a persistent ependymal cyst present commonly in neonates
