Public health emergencies like pandemics results in systemic disruptions, leading to substantial indirect consequences beyond direct morbidity and mortality. The experiences from previous outbreaks have shown disproportionate effects on the vulnerable groups. This study aims to identify the challenges faced by these groups in attaining routine health services during the COVID-19 pandemic and the strategies used for service recovery. A qualitative study done in Jodhpur district in Western India using inductive thematic approach. Data were collected through eight key informant interviews with he

BACKGROUND: Infectious diseases that can cause epidemics, such as COVID-19, SARS-CoV, and MERS-CoV, constitute a major social issue, with healthcare providers fearing secondary, tertiary, and even quaternary infections. Loneliness is a major concern for public health in contemporary societies. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to loneliness because of their reduced social connections following life changes, such as retirement. Loneliness is often investigated and discussed together with social isolation. While social isolation implies an actual lack of social connections, loneliness implies a perceived deficit of social relations regardless of the real amount of social contacts. However, since living alone may lead to loneliness, individuals can experience both loneliness and social isolation together.

Health emergencies are governed nationally but experienced locally, where primary health care (PHC) plays a central role in maintaining essential services, surveillance, medication access, chronic disease management, communication, and recovery. Flexible surge capacity (FSC) was developed as a cross-sector approach for identifying and preparing additional personnel, facilities, supplies, systems, and community capabilities, but PHC has not been explicitly integrated into the concept. This narrative conceptual review examined how emergency-ready PHC can be incorporated into FSC at the subnation

The EMSC movement is still in its infancy, and there is much that remains to be done. The primary care pediatrician plays a major role in the EMSC system and should continue to advocate for efficient, high-quality pediatric emergency care. In summary, there are several ways that the office-based pediatrician can and should become involved with EMSC: 1. Pediatricians should emphasize safe and injury prevention at each health maintenance visit throughout a child's life. 2. Pediatricians should encourage all parents to become certified in BLS/CPR. Ideally, training in CPR should be provided durin

Global healthcare systems have faced unprecedented strain due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a profound impact on individuals with non-communicable diseases (NCDs), a scenario particularly pronounced in low-income countries like Nepal. This study aimed to understand the experiences of and challenges faced by patients with NCDs in Nepal during the pandemic, focusing on healthcare service availability and identifying factors affecting healthcare use, with the goal of being prepared for future emergencies. This study utilized a telephonic survey of 102 patients with NCDs and 10 qualitative interv

In this article the authors offer their perspective on the changes in the Dutch harm reduction field. From the 1970s to the 1990s, the Netherlands emerged as a leader in harm reduction services, driven by grassroots movements like the Medisch-sociale Dienst Heroïne Gebruikers (MDHG) (Medisch-sociale Dienst Heroïne Gebruikers (MDHG) translates to Medical-Social Service Heroin Users in English) in Amsterdam and Junkiebond in Rotterdam. These organisations advocated for health-centred policies, initiated needle exchange programmes, and created safe consumption spaces. Their efforts led to signifi

Massachusetts is one of the epicenters of the opioid epidemic and has been severely impacted by injection-related viral and bacterial infections. A recent increase in newly diagnosed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections among persons who inject drugs in the state highlights the urgent need to address and bridge the overlapping epidemics of opioid use disorder (OUD) and injection-related infections. Building on an established relationship between the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Boston Medical Center, the Infectious Diseases section has contributed to the development a

BACKGROUND: The opioid epidemic in the United States has devastated the lives of individuals and imposed decades-long opportunity costs on the community.
METHODS: We analyzed Emergency Medical Services (EMS) data from the Maryland Department of Health installation of the Electronic Surveillance System for Early Notification of Community-Based Epidemics (ESSENCE) to assess the impact of COVID-19 on EMS call volume and how COVID-19 impacted patients' decisions whether to accept transport to a hospital following an EMS call.
RESULTS: The rate of patients accepting transportation via EMS to a ho

BACKGROUND: Medical imaging features along the entire healthcare continuum and is known for its fast-paced technological evolution which enables it to keep up with the demands of the healthcare system to provide safe, quality services. The overall efficacy and efficiency of the system depends on practitioners' clinical competence, achieved through professional education and continuous professional development. Recent studies have revealed concerns regarding newly graduated healthcare professionals' preparedness and readiness to handle actual practice.

BACKGROUND: People returning to communities from prison or jail face stressors related to securing housing, including discrimination, restrictions based on prior felony convictions, and limited economic and social resources. Existing housing programs can effectively reduce housing instability but often do not fully address the needs of people involved in the criminal justice system experiencing homelessness who often have co-occurring chronic medical issues, and psychiatric and substance use disorders.
METHODS: Project CHANGE is an ongoing program to deliver person-centered, integrated care a

BACKGROUND: Persons living with dementia (PLWD) have longer lengths of stay (LOS) in the Emergency Department (ED), which increases risk of delirium, falls and medication errors. Care of PLWD in the ED is complex and presence of dementia care specialists (geriatrics, neurology, psychiatry) may streamline care. We sought to understand the contribution of health system factors, including presence of dementia care specialists, to LOS among PLWD.
METHODS: We linked statewide ED visit data on patients discharged from the ED for Arkansas, Arizona, Florida and Massachusetts from the 2018 Healthcare

In super-aged societies such as Japan, achieving "healthy longevity with well-being" requires not only medical and long-term care services but also a seamless continuum that integrates health promotion, frailty prevention, and community-based support, along with age-friendly physical and social environments that support functional ability, social participation, and independent living. Within this framework, oral frailty (OF)-defined as the accumulation of slight declines in oral function, including tooth loss, chewing and swallowing difficulties, oral dryness, and low articulatory oral motor s

BACKGROUND: Medication errors pose a risk to outpatient medication safety. Community pharmacists play a central role in medication safety; however, their contribution to risk management in social and healthcare settings is less studied.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to explore factors identified by community pharmacists contributing to medication errors originating outside pharmacies. It aims to show how community pharmacies can collaborate with social and healthcare organisations to enhance medication safety.
METHODS: Medication safety incident reports from three wellbeing services counties i

BACKGROUND: In an effort to reduce the increasing number of persons with mental illness (PMI) experiencing incarceration, co-responding police-mental health teams are being utilized as a way to divert PMI from the criminal justice system. Co-response teams are typically an inter-agency collaboration between police and mental health professionals, and in some cases include emergency medical personnel. These teams are intended to facilitate emergency response by linking patients to mental health resources rather than the criminal justice system, thus reducing burdens on both the criminal justice
