Adolescents choosing self-harm as an emotion regulation strategy: the protective role of trait emotional intelligence.

OBJECTIVES: The present study seeks to extend the understanding of the role of dispositional factors in the aetiology of self-harm among adolescents. We hypothesized that higher trait emotional intelligence (trait EI) would be associated with a lower likelihood to harm oneself, and that this relationship would be mediated by the choice of coping strategies. DESIGN AND METHODS: Trait EI, coping styles and self-harm behaviours were assessed in 490 adolescents recruited from eight British schools. RESULTS: The results supported our hypothesis and showed that the relationship between trait EI an

Investigating the neural effects of emotional stimuli and pharmacological treatments on the emotional regulation network in fibromyalgia: A graph theory approach.

BACKGROUND: The present study examines the impact of positive, negative, and neutral emotional stimuli on brain activity, as well as the relationship between various pharmacological treatment states and functional brain topology, with special emphasis on regions related to emotional regulation in patients with fibromyalgia (FM). METHOD: In this study, fMRI images of 33 women with FM were used to analyze brain regions involved in emotional processing and regulation using various graph theory metrics. To investigate the relationship between the values of these metrics and different pharmacologi

Emotion regulation difficulties associated with the experience of uncued panic attacks: evidence of experiential avoidance, emotional nonacceptance, and decreased emotional clarity.

Emotion regulation difficulties among nonclinical uncued panickers were examined in two studies. In Study 1, participants with a recent history of uncued panic attacks (n=91), compared to a nonpanic sample (n=91), reported significantly greater levels of experiential avoidance, lack of emotional acceptance, and lack of emotional clarity. In Study 2, a subset of uncued panickers and nonpanickers from Study 1 (n=17 per group) viewed positive and negative emotion-eliciting film clips. Despite comparable levels of self-reported distress and physiological arousal, panickers reported using more emot

Randomized trial of a single-session digital intervention targeting emotion-related beliefs and emotion regulation.

There is a lack of accessible and efficacious interventions for emotionally distressed adults. We developed a single-session digital intervention, called Visitor Mindset, targeting beliefs about negative emotions and awareness, clarity, and acceptance of negative emotions. We evaluated the acceptability, feasibility, and short-term efficacy of Visitor Mindset among emotionally distressed adults (n = 530). Participants were recruited via CloudResearch and randomized to Visitor Mindset or control (nature videos with relaxing music). The primary outcome was emotional distress. Secondary outcomes

Emotion regulation habits and emotional states of college students during lockdown: A cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of negative emotional states, such as anxiety and depression, has increased annually. Although personal habits are known to influence emotional regulation, the precise mechanisms underlying this relationship remain unclear. AIM: To investigate emotion regulation habits impact on students negative emotions during lockdown, using the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic as a case example. METHODS: During the coronavirus disease 2019 lockdown, an online cross-sectional survey was conducted at a Chinese university. Emotional states were assessed using the Depression, Anxi

Cognitive and Emotional Predictors of Decision-Making in Adults: Roles of Cognitive Functions and Emotion Regulation Difficulties.

OBJECTIVES: The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is a widely used measure of decision-making that mimics real-life situations involving uncertainty and reward. While prior research has separately explored the roles of cognitive functions (e.g., intelligence) and non-cognitive factors (e.g., emotion regulation), few have examined their combined and relative influence. This study aimed to clarify how cognitive abilities and emotion regulation difficulties contribute to decision-making under ambiguity and risk, as assessed by the IGT. METHODS: Fifty healthy adults completed a modified version of the IGT

Negative emotion differentiation in adolescents: unpacking linkages with emotion regulation traits and behaviours, rumination, and depression.

Negative emotion differentiation (NED), or the ability to parse negative emotions (NEs) with precision, is theorised to facilitate emotion regulation (ER), but research examining the link between NED and the development of ER skills in adolescence has been surprisingly sparse and inconsistent. Brooding rumination may help explain heterogeneity in the relationship between NED and ER, as high brooders may continue to negatively perseverate on their NEs even if they are well-differentiated. In this preregistered longitudinal study of adolescents (N = 241, ages 14-17), participants completed self-

A comparative analysis of adolescents' emotions and emotion regulation strategies when witnessing different cyberbullying scenarios.

The search for greater popularity and acceptance by peers increases the use of social networks that may cause cyberbullying. The high number of adolescents who observe this phenomenon may help reduce the negative impact on the victims. Emotion regulation is an important predictor of adolescents' psychological adjustment and social competence to adopt a prosocial behavior. Bystanders of these incidents may misinterpret what they see, due to specific cyberbullying characteristics which may influence emotion regulation negatively. Studies about emotions and emotion regulations in bystanders are s

Nonlinear associations between cardiovascular stress reactivity and emotional reactivity and emotion regulation among adolescents.

Cardiovascular stress reactivity (CVR) is considered as a physiological pathway linking emotional reactivity and emotion regulation with psychopathology. However, the associations between CVR and emotional reactivity and emotion regulation remain underexplored, with limited evidence showing that either excessive or blunted CVR is associated with emotional reactivity and emotional regulation. Recently, moderate CVR has been theoretically hypothesized to be related to optimal outcomes; however, whether CVR is nonlinearly associated with emotional reactivity and emotion regulation still needs to

Problematic online anime (animation) use: It's relationship with viewers' satisfaction with life, emotions, and emotion regulation.

Although there are numerous studies on problematic technology use, such as problematic video game use and problematic smartphone use, little is known about problematic online anime use. However, problematic online anime use warrants further examination because of anime's popularity and commercial importance. Furthermore, how emotion strategies and emotions (such as pleasure and arousal) invoked upon watching the online anime are associated with problematic online anime use is not examined in previous studies. To bridge these literature gaps and to contribute to the fields of emotion regulation

From the need to the knowledge. Feeding emotions and thoughts: Assessing emotion regulation strategies in food tribes.

Some people choose to follow a certain dietary habit because they are guided by strong beliefs, but also to pursue a healthy lifestyle. Food tribes are defined as social groups sharing common values and beliefs that underlie food and lifestyle choices. The current study aimed to investigate potential differences in emotion regulation between specific food tribes, and when comparing food tribes to people who conversely do not follow a dietary habit. Specifically, we examined the presence of rumination, psychological inflexibility, and emotional contagion as components of emotion dysregulation.

The effects of left DLPFC tDCS on emotion regulation, biased attention, and emotional reactivity to negative content.

The potentiation of neural activity in lateral prefrontal regions via transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can reduce patterns of biased attention for threat and may facilitate intentional emotion regulation. The current study sought to determine whether left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex tDCS, in combination with intentional down-regulation of emotional responses would reduce negative appraisals of aversive content during emotional regulation (assessed during online tDCS), reduce patterns of biased attention and attention bias variability (assessed offline), and attenuate spontaneo

Intervening to shape children's emotion regulation: A review of emotion socialization parenting programs for young children.

Emotion regulation patterns are shaped, in part, by the quality of interpersonal interactions during early development. Given the important contribution of caregiver emotion socialization, parenting programs targeting these socialization practices represent an effective method of preventative intervention for childhood difficulties with emotion regulation. This review examines emotion socialization parenting programs that target the development of emotion regulation in young children aged 0-6. Through a systematic search of multiple databases, 1117 articles were retrieved for title, abstract,

The role of emotion regulation difficulties in the connection between childhood emotional abuse and borderline personality features.

In the present report from the Rhode Island Methods to Improve Diagnostic Assessment and Services project, we examined the role of emotion dysregulation as a mediator between childhood abuse and borderline personality disorder (BPD) feature severity among a sample of 964 adults presenting for treatment at an outpatient clinic. A structural equation model suggested that emotional abuse relates to BPD features both directly and through difficulties with emotion regulation, whereas physical abuse showed only a weak indirect relation with BPD features. There was no link between sexual abuse and BP

Attentional avoidance of emotional stimuli in postpartum women with childhood history of maltreatment and difficulties with emotion regulation.

Child abuse and neglect can lead to difficulties regulating responses to threatening and emotional situations. Exposure to childhood maltreatment has been linked to conflicting findings of both attention biases toward and away from threat-related information. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether emotion regulation moderated the association between history of childhood maltreatment and attention bias in a sample of postpartum women. One hundred forty women participated in the study at 7 months postpartum. Selective attention to both negative emotional and attachment-related n

Attachment style and emotional eating in bariatric surgery candidates: The mediating role of difficulties in emotion regulation.

OBJECTIVE: Difficulties with emotion regulation is a hypothesized mechanism through which attachment insecurity may affect emotional eating. No studies have yet investigated this effect in the bariatric population. Because many obese individuals engage in emotional eating, difficulty regulating emotion may be an important underlying mechanism through which attachment insecurity is linked to emotional eating in bariatric surgery candidates. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 1393 adult bariatric surgery candidates from the Toronto Western Hospital were recruited to complete the Emotional

Emotion regulation in social anxiety disorder: behavioral and neural responses to three socio-emotional tasks.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is thought to involve deficits in emotion regulation, and more specifically, deficits in cognitive reappraisal. However, evidence for such deficits is mixed. METHODS: Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of blood oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) signal, we examined reappraisal-related behavioral and neural responses in 27 participants with generalized SAD and 27 healthy controls (HC) during three socio-emotional tasks: (1) looming harsh faces (Faces); (2) videotaped actors delivering social criticism (Criticism); and (3) written autobiograp

Parental Emotion Coaching and Child Emotion Regulation as Protective Factors for Children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

We assessed linkages of mothers' emotion coaching and children's emotion regulation and emotion lability/negativity with children's adjustment in 72 mother-child dyads seeking treatment for Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Dyads completed questionnaires and discussed emotion-related family events. Maternal emotion coaching was associated with children's emotion regulation, which in turn was related to higher mother-reported adaptive skills, higher child-reported internalizing symptoms, and lower child-reported adjustment. When children were high in emotion lability/negativity, mothers' emo

Non-suicidal self-injury and emotion regulation: a review on facial emotion recognition and facial mimicry.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is an increasingly prevalent, clinically significant behavior in adolescents and can be associated with serious consequences for the afflicted person. Emotion regulation is considered its most frequent function. Because the symptoms of NSSI are common and cause impairment, it will be included in Section 3 disorders as a new disorder in the revised Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). So far, research has been conducted mostly with patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) showing self-injurious behavior. Therefore, for this re

A longitudinal study of emotion regulation, emotion lability-negativity, and internalizing symptomatology in maltreated and nonmaltreated children.

The longitudinal contributions of emotion regulation and emotion lability-negativity to internalizing symptomatology were examined in a low-income sample (171 maltreated and 151 nonmaltreated children, from age 7 to 10 years). Latent difference score models indicated that for both maltreated and nonmaltreated children, emotion regulation was a mediator between emotion lability-negativity and internalizing symptomatology, whereas emotion lability-negativity was not a mediator between emotion regulation and internalizing symptomatology. Early maltreatment was associated with high emotion labilit
