The role of olfaction and sex-hormone status in empathy-related measures.

Reports of a female advantage in empathy-related measures suggest a role for sex hormones, although the data are inconsistent. Studies also report similar sex differences in human olfactory perception. In rodents, olfaction is involved in detecting and integrating socially relevant information and is modulated by the brain actions of estrogens. We hypothesized that olfaction may untangle the mixed evidence on the relationship between sex hormones and empathy-related measures (cognitive and affective) in humans. To test this, we examined 60 healthy participants in three sex-hormone-status group

Empathy in pregnant women and new mothers: a systematic literature review.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review explores changes in perinatal empathy and influence on maternal behaviours and child development. BACKGROUND: The well-being and development of infants are commonly linked to their mothers' capacity for empathy. However, characteristic changes during pregnancy and childbirth including sleep deprivation, mood and cognitive difficulties may disrupt empathic processing. METHODS: Original research papers (n = 7413) published in English language peer-reviewed academic journals were obtained by searching four electronic databases PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus and CINAH

Reductions in Goal-Directed Cognition as a Consequence of Being the Target of Empathy.

Although empathy is widely promoted as a beneficial practice across both intergroup and interpersonal contexts, the implications of being the target of empathy for the target's own psychological state are unclear. Three experiments examined how being the target of empathy affects goal-directed cognition outcomes related to a psychological sense of power, namely, the ability to maintain goal focus and readiness to ask for more in negotiations. We reasoned that because individuals typically empathize with others they perceive as disadvantaged and needing support, trying to empathize would raise

The Influence of Cognitive Load on Empathy and Intention in Response to Infant Crying.

Many studies have explored risk factors for child maltreatment, but little research has focused on situational risk factors such as cognitive load, which involves within-individual fluctuation. The current study sought to determine whether cognitive load led to within-individual changes in intention in response to infant crying. The study also sought to ascertain whether state empathy, empathic concern (EC), and personal distress mediated or moderated this relationship. Sixty-six participants completed a memory task (remembering meaningless, two- or eight-letter, English alphabet string), duri

Quadratic Associations Between Empathy and Depression as Moderated by Emotion Dysregulation.

Empathic tendencies have been associated with interpersonal and psychological benefits, but empathy at extreme levels or in combination with certain personal characteristics may contribute to risk for depression. This study tested the moderating role of cognitive emotion regulation in depression's association with empathy using nonlinear models. Young adults (N = 304; 77% female; M = 19 years) completed measures of cognitive emotion regulation strategies, depression, and affective and cognitive empathy. Individuals with good regulation had low levels of depression overall and their depression

Empathy and social functioning in anorexia nervosa before and after recovery.

INTRODUCTION: People with anorexia nervosa (AN) are known to have difficulties with social and emotional functioning, as indicated by their symptom presentation and also performance on tests of emotion perception. This study explores the level of empathy in AN, in terms of resonant experience of emotion in other people using a self-report measure. METHODS: Twenty-eight women with acute AN were compared to 25 women who have recovered from AN, and a further 54 healthy control (HC) participants. They were assessed using a questionnaire to measure reported levels of empathy, emotional recognition

Effects of an emotional intelligence intervention on aggression and empathy among adolescents.

The aim of this study was to explore the effects of a two-year intervention grounded in the ability model of emotional intelligence (EI) on aggression and empathy among adolescents. Eight Spanish public schools volunteered to participate in the research. A total of 590 adolescents (46% boys) were randomly assigned to either the EI training group or control group conditions. Students in the EI training group reported lower levels of physical/verbal aggression, anger, hostility, personal distress and fantasy compared to students in the control group. Additionally, the EI program was particularly

Love, eye contact and the developmental origins of empathy v. psychopathy.

BACKGROUND: A propensity to attend to other people's emotions is a necessary condition for human empathy. AIMS: To test our hypothesis that psychopathic disorder begins as a failure to attend to the eyes of attachment figures, using a `love' scenario in young children. METHOD: Children with oppositional defiant disorder, assessed for callous-unemotional traits, and a control group were observed in a love interaction with mothers. Eye contact and affection were measured for each dyad. RESULTS: There was no group difference in affection and eye contact expressed by the mothers. Compared with

Neural mechanisms of empathy in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and their fathers.

A deficit in empathy has been repeatedly described in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and also, albeit less markedly, in their unaffected relatives. Here, we aimed to investigate the neural mechanisms of empathy in ASD, and to explore familial contributions to empathy correlates. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, 15 boys with ASD, 11 fathers of adolescents with ASD, and two control groups comparable for age and IQ (n=15 typically developing boys and their fathers (n=9)) were investigated during an empathy task. Emotional faces were presented and participants were eit

Who caused the pain? An fMRI investigation of empathy and intentionality in children.

When we attend to other people in pain, the neural circuits underpinning the processing of first-hand experience of pain are activated in the observer. This basic somatic sensorimotor resonance plays a critical role in the primitive building block of empathy and moral reasoning that relies on the sharing of others' distress. However, the full-blown capacity of human empathy is more sophisticated than the mere simulation of the target's affective state. Indeed, empathy is about both sharing and understanding the emotional state of others in relation to oneself. In this functional magnetic reson

Functional modularity of the medial prefrontal cortex: involvement in human empathy.

To investigate medial frontal lobe mediation of human empathy, the authors analyzed the activation areas in statistical parametric maps of 80 studies reporting neural correlates of empathic processing. The meta-analysis revealed 6 spatially distinct activation clusters in the medial part of the frontal lobe dorsal to the intercommissural plane. The most dorsal cluster coincided with the left supplementary motor area (SMA). Rostrally adjacent was a cluster that overlapped with the right pre-SMA. In addition, there were 3 left-hemispheric and 1 right-hemispheric clusters located at the border be

Empathy in mild cognitive impairment: a preliminary clinical comparative study in Southern Switzerland using the interpersonal reactivity index (IRI) and the story-based empathy task (SET).

INTRODUCTION: Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a transitional stage between normal aging and dementia, frequently associated with subtle deficits in social cognition. Empathy, a core component of social cognition, encompasses both affective and cognitive dimensions and may be compromised even in prodromal phases of neurodegenerative conditions. Despite its clinical relevance, empathy in MCI remains underexplored, and standardized assessment tools are seldom used in routine diagnostics. Theory of mind is another important aspect of social cognition, and, as with empathy, it is unclear how it

Large language models in Hidradenitis suppurativa: strong empathy, weak exposome awareness.

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) imposes a substantial biopsychosocial burden. As patients increasingly consult large language models (LLMs) for health information, their capacity to provide clinically appropriate, empathic, readable and exposome-aware counseling requires evaluation. OBJECTIVES: To benchmark LLM-generated responses to simulated HS consultations for clinical performance, exposome awareness, quality-of-life (QoL) coverage and readability. METHODS: In this blinded cross-sectional study, five LLMs (Claude-4.5 Sonnet, Gemini-3.0 Pro, ChatGPT-5.2, DeepSeek-V3.2 and Llama-

Empathy Affects Individualized Care Perception and Pain Knowledge in Nursing Students.

BACKGROUND: Effective pain management is essential for individualized nursing care, yet studies report nursing students often have insufficient knowledge in this area. Empathic tendency may act as a key factor, influencing how knowledge about pain management translates into individualized care practices. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between nursing students' knowledge and attitudes toward pain management and their perceptions of individualized care and to evaluate the mediating role of empathic tendency in this relationship. DESIGN: This study is a cross-sec

Virtual Reality Education Increases Neurologic Immersion and Empathy in Nursing Students.

Background/Objectives: Virtual reality (VR) is increasingly being used in educational settings, but the evidence is mixed on whether this is better for learners. This is due in part to a reliance on self-reported "liking" of the experience rather than measuring if VR more effectively improves learner engagement and conveys information. A study was designed to determine if VR would improve nursing students' understanding of patient interactions in the clinic (n = 70). Methods: The present study measured neurologic Immersion in nursing students during a realistic patient journey in VR and in a s

Empathy deficits in women with complex trauma following childhood sexual abuse.

Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) stemming from childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is characterized by profound interpersonal difficulties in later life. Despite the crucial role empathy plays in social functioning, the specific deficits in emotional and cognitive empathy in CPTSD remain understudied. This study employs a rich, naturalistic empathy task to investigate empathic responses among women with CPTSD following childhood sexual abuse. Female participants with CPTSD following CSA and female controls viewed autobiographical videos containing emotional pain, while providing dynamic

Empathy in schizophrenia: neural alterations during emotion recognition and affective sharing.

INTRODUCTION: Deficits in emotion recognition and processing are characteristic for patients with schizophrenia [SCZ]. METHODS: We targeted both emotion recognition and affective sharing, one in static and one in dynamic facial stimuli, during functional magnetic resonance imaging [fMRI] in 22 SCZ patients and 22 matched healthy controls [HC]. Current symptomatology and cognitive deficits were assessed as potential influencing factors. RESULTS: Behaviorally, patients only showed a prolonged response time in age-discrimination trials. For emotion-processing trials, patients showed a differenc

Recognition of Empathy from Synchronization between Brain Activity and Eye Movement.

In the era of user-generated content (UGC) and virtual interactions within the metaverse, empathic digital content has become increasingly important. This study aimed to quantify human empathy levels when exposed to digital media. To assess empathy, we analyzed brain wave activity and eye movements in response to emotional videos. Forty-seven participants watched eight emotional videos, and we collected their brain activity and eye movement data during the viewing. After each video session, participants provided subjective evaluations. Our analysis focused on the relationship between brain act

Creating Patient Context: Empathy and Attitudes Toward Diabetes Following Virtual Immersion.

BACKGROUND: Pandemic circumstances created challenges for doctor of physical therapy (DPT) students to understand social determinants of health (SDH) in clinical rotations. Instead of canceling clinical rotations, a virtual reality cinema (cine-VR) education series was implemented. The purpose of this project is to describe the effect of this simulated immersion on student empathy and attitudes toward diabetes. METHOD: The DPT students (n=59) participated in 12 cine-VR education modules, completing surveys at three time points as part of coursework. The students completed baseline measures of
