BACKGROUND: Rosai Dorfman disease is a rare histiocytosis, which is characterized by accumulation of histiocytes in lymph nodes, but also in extranodal locations. Histologically, one of the key features of Rosai Dorfman disease is emperipolesis. Treatment options involve surgical resection, radiation, chemotherapy, corticosteroids, and immunotherapy. Rosai Dorfman disease treatment depends on disease location and symptomatology. Patients with mild nodal or cutaneous involvement usually have a self-limited course and require observation only. The exact pathogenesis of Rosai Dorfman disease is s

BACKGROUND: The differential diagnosis of an adrenal mass is critical for clinical management. We report a case that expanded the spectrum of a rare disease and present a novel diagnostic trap for both pathologists and clinicians.
METHODS: Histopathological, immunohistochemical (CD68, CD163, ALK), and molecular (FISH) analyses were performed on a right adrenal tumor from an 81-year-old male.
RESULTS: The tumor was diagnosed as ALK-positive histiocytosis. Uniquely, it presented as a primary adrenal mass with unusual morphology. The tumor cells showed marked anaplasia and emperipolesis. Apart

Rosai-Dorfman Disease (RDD) is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. We present a unique case of RDD with sinus and palatal involvement managed with surgical biopsy, debulking and radiation, and review the literature on this topic. A 69-year-old female presented with a two-year history of nasal obstruction and left-sided epiphora. CT imaging demonstrated a large soft tissue mass with extension into and bony destruction of the left maxillary sinus and hard palate. An initial biopsy obtained at an outside center reported an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. MRI and PET-CT were obtained and

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare histiocytic disorder that most commonly affects lymph nodes but can also present in extranodal sites, including the breast. Immune-related RDD may be associated with increased plasma cells, with a significant proportion of the plasma cells expressing IgG4. These cases typically lack the other features of IgG4-related disease. We report a case of a 20-year-old woman who presented with a painless mass in the left breast. Prior biopsy was diagnosed as RDD with increased plasma cells. Ultrasound scan showed a well-circumscribed hypoechoic hypervascular solid s

PURPOSE: To report an unusual presentation of a 48-year-old man with a salmon-colored epibulbar mass, whose pathology was consistent with extranodal Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD).
METHOD: We conducted a retrospective and interventional case report.
RESULTS: A 48-year-old white man presented with progressive left eye irritation, redness, and multiple large subcutaneous nodules on his arms and torso over the past year. He did not have any lymphadenopathy, lymphocytosis, or fever. Visual acuity and intraocular pressures were normal in both eyes. He had mild vertical diplopia on downward gaze. Sli

Rosai-Dorfman disease, also known as sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy, is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytic disorder most commonly involving the cervical lymph nodes, which are affected in approximately 80%-90% of cases. It predominantly affects children and young adults but may occur at any age, typically presenting with painless, bilateral, and sometimes bulky cervical lymphadenopathy, occasionally associated with systemic inflammatory symptoms and laboratory abnormalities such as elevated inflammatory markers and polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia. Histopathological exam

BACKGROUND: Histological similarities between granulomas and granulomatous mycosis fungoides (GMF) may lead to misdiagnoses of sarcoidosis or leprosy.
METHODS: This report presents four patients with GMF in whom skin biopsies showed perineural and intraneural granulomas that were confused with tuberculoid leprosy granulomas.
RESULTS: Patient 1 presented with erythematous plaques and bulky nodules. Biopsy findings suggested cutaneous sarcoidosis. Tumor resection showed granulomatous infiltrate extending to the fascia and skeletal muscle. Clinicopathological correlations permitted a diagnosis

BACKGROUND: Giant angiofibromas in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) are rare.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to report two patients who had TSC with unusually large and disfiguring facial angiofibromas and to identify underlying histopathologic changes that may possibly explain the clinical features.
METHODS: We performed a clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular biologic study using 42 lesional specimens and peripheral blood from one of the two patients. The immunohistochemical investigations were mainly focused on the vascular moiety of the lesions. TSC1 and TSC2 alterati

A distinctive histological variant of poorly differentiated, sarcomatoid, non-small cell lung carcinoma characterized by a discohesive population of giant tumor cells associated with prominent interstitial inflammatory cell infiltrates is described. The tumors occurred in 7 women and 7 men, 42 to 72 years of age (mean: 56 y). They predominantly affected the upper lobes and measured 1.3 to 9 cm in greatest diameter (mean: 4.6 cm). The tumor cells were characterized by large pleomorphic nuclei with prominent nucleoli, ample cytoplasm, and frequent abnormal mitoses, and were surrounded by a dense

PurposeThere has been a lack of evidence-based management strategies on the nasal presentations of Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD). We aim to investigate the clinical manifestation, treatment, and outcomes in patients with nasal RDD.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed available medical records of patients diagnosed with nasal RDD from 2014 to 2021 at our department.ResultsA total of 26 patients were included with a marked female preponderance (2.25:1). The most common symptom and affected sites were nasal congestion (31%) and nasal cavity (73%), respectively. The average times of biopsies was 1.5 t

AIMS: The sinonasal tract is a common extranodal site for Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD). Recently, histiocytes with features of RDD were identified in the clinical setting of chronic sinusitis. This study evaluates whether this phenomenon should be considered part of the RDD spectrum or classified separately as RDD-like histiocytes.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We prospectively collected 13 cases showing histological features of RDD in chronic sinusitis patients and identified 14 with similar findings (3.5%) via retrospective review of 403 sinus contents over 2 years. All 27 cases displayed nodular agg

Renal tumours include a heterogeneous and diverse spectrum of neoplasms. Recent advances in this field have significantly improved our understanding of the morphological, immunohistochemical, molecular, epidemiological and clinical characteristics of renal tumours, which led to the new Vancouver classification of renal neoplasia and the new World Health Organization (WHO) classification of renal cell tumours. This review aims to summarise the new information and evidence on several new and emerging/provisional renal entities, which were mostly generated after the recent classification of renal

A 45-year-old woman had pyrexia, headaches, collapse and hyponatraemia. Intracerebral abscess, bacterial meningitis and subarachnoid haemorrhage were excluded. She was given intravenous antibiotics and gradually recovered. One month later she was readmitted with diplopia, headache and vomiting. Serum sodium was low (107 mmol/l) and a diagnosis of inappropriate ADH secretion was made. MRI scan showed a suprasellar tumour arising from the posterior pituitary gland. A skin rash gradually faded. Serum cortisol, prolactin, gonadotrophins and thyroid hormone levels were low. A pituitary tumour was r

A histomorphometric analysis was performed on trephine biopsies of the bone marrow in 55 patients with chronic myeloproliferative disorders (CMPDs) and marked thrombocytosis (platelet count exceeding 600 x 10(9)/l). This study aimed at discriminating primary (essential) thrombocythaemia (PTH) from the various other subtypes of CMPDs presenting with thrombocytosis. Following the diagnostic requirements postulated by the Polycythemia-vera-Study-Group for PTH and polycythaemia vera rubra (P.vera) and the generally accepted criteria for the establishment of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) and agno

BACKGROUND: Rosai-Dorfman Disease (RDD) is a rare histiocytic disorder typically affecting lymph nodes. Extranodal RDD is uncommon, and isolated central nervous system (CNS) or spinal disease is particularly rare, limiting guidance on diagnosis and management.
METHODS: We report a patient treated at our institution and conducted a systematic review of all published cases of extranodal RDD isolated to the thoracic spine. Patient demographics, clinical presentation, imaging and histopathologic findings, treatments, and outcomes were extracted.
RESULTS: A 21-year-old woman presented with progre

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare type of histiocytosis usually presenting with painless bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy and leukocytosis. Cytopenias, particularly isolated lymphopenia, are particularly uncommon and poorly characterized. Hereby, we report a case of a 3-year-old boy presenting with progressive bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy and profound T- and B-cell lymphopenia. Immunophenotyping demonstrated markedly reduced CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, and CD19+ cells, low borderline level of NK-cells, and expansion of TCRγδ+ double-negative (CD3+/CD4-/CD8-) T cells. B-cell subset analysis r

The diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) relies on well-established criteria encompassing histological, serological, and clinical features. Diagnosing AIH may become challenging when encountering patients who have undergone steroid therapy for other co-existing diseases. Thirty-nine liver biopsies from 25 patients with treated and untreated AIH were classified into three groups: 1) Newly diagnosed untreated biopsies (n = 16); 2) Newly diagnosed partially treated biopsies from patients already on steroid treatment for other co-existing diseases (n = 9); 3) Previously diagnosed biopsies from
