BACKGROUND: Endophthalmitis caused by Enterococci is rare, and cases involving vancomycin-resistant enterococci are even rarer. We report the first case of Enterococcus casseliflavus endophthalmitis associated with injury caused by a pig. We also review reported cases of exogenous endophthalmitis caused by Enterococcus casseliflavus and discuss the clinical management and prognosis of this disease.
CASE SUMMARY: A 43-year-old man with no previous visual problems complained of endophthalmitis in his left eye following injury caused by a pig. Visual acuity was light perception and B-ultrasonogr

This study was based on 43 vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) strains collected from clinical specimens. Susceptibility testing and resistance gene amplification revealed that these strains had multidrug resistance and all belonged to the VanA phenotype. Furthermore, there were seven ST types, and all belonged to the clonal complex (CC17); ST17 and ST78 were the main ST types. In particular, ST1392 and ST1394 are novel ST types first identified in this research. Genome analysis of SY1, LY19 and LY22 showed that tet(O)and tet(K) were the genes responsible for tetracycline resista

An 8-year-old boy presented to our hospital with complaints of fever, epigastric pain and headache. Enterococcus faecalis were isolated from urine and blood culture, bacteraemic urinary tract infection was clinically diagnosed. Although vancomycin and ampicillin were administrated, fever did not subside. Contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) revealed bilateral and multiple wedge-shaped defects, thus prompting a diagnosis of acute lobar nephronia (ALN). After 7 days of antibiotic treatment, the patient's fever subsided. ALN can be classified into two subgroups based on features of CECT; simple and compli

Alcohol-based disinfectants and particularly hand rubs are a key way to control hospital infections worldwide. Such disinfectants restrict transmission of pathogens, such as multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecium Despite this success, health care infections caused by E. faecium are increasing. We tested alcohol tolerance of 139 hospital isolates of E. faecium obtained between 1997 and 2015 and found that E. faecium isolates after 2010 were 10-fold more tolerant to killing by alcohol than were older isolates. Using a mouse gut colonization model of E. faecium transmi

BACKGROUND: Enterococcus is ubiquitous in nature and is a commensal of both the bovine and human gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It is also associated with clinical infections in humans. Subtherapeutic administration of antibiotics to cattle selects for antibiotic resistant enterococci in the bovine GI tract. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) may be present in enterococci following antibiotic use in cattle. If located on mobile genetic elements (MGEs) their dissemination between Enterococcus species and to pathogenic bacteria may be promoted, reducing the efficacy of antibiotics.
RESULTS: We pr

Antibiotic resistance is an ever-growing problem faced by all major sectors of health care, including dentistry. Recurrent infections related to multidrug-resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) in hospitals are untreatable and question the effectiveness of notable drugs. Two major reasons for these recurrent infections are acquired antibiotic resistance genes and biofilm formation. None of the traditionally known effective techniques have been able to efficiently resolve these i

Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VREfs) is an important nosocomial pathogen(1,2). We undertook whole genome sequencing of E. faecalis associated with bloodstream infection in the UK and Ireland over more than a decade to determine the population structure and genetic associations with hospital adaptation. Three lineages predominated in the population, two of which (L1 and L2) were nationally distributed, and one (L3) geographically restricted. Genome comparison with a global collection identified that L1 and L3 were also present in the USA, but were genetically distinct. Over 90% of

OBJECTIVES: Molecular mechanism of the pathogenicity of Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), a suspected endodontic pathogen, has not yet been adequately elucidated due to limited information on its virulence factors. Here we report the identification of in vivo expressed antigens of E. faecalis by using a novel immunoscreening technique called change-mediated antigen technology (CMAT) and an experimental animal model of endodontic infection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Among 4,500 E. coli recombinant clones screened, 19 positive clones reacted reproducibly with hyperimmune sera obtained from rabb

PURPOSE: In light of recent evidence suggesting enhancement of daptomycin activity against vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) by ampicillin and other β-lactam antibiotics, we evaluated the safety profile and clinical efficacy of daptomycin with and without concomitant β-lactam antimicrobials in the treatment of VRE (faecium or faecalis) bacteremia from multiple centers across the United States.
METHODS: Data were collected retrospectively as part of a larger multicenter registry (The Cubicin Outcomes Registry and Experience). Efficacy and clinical outcomes in patients with VRE bacteremia

Enterococcus faecalis is an opportunistic nosocomial pathogen that is highly resistant to a variety of environmental insults, including an intrinsic tolerance to antimicrobials that target the cell wall (CW). With the goal of determining the CW-stress stimulon of E. faecalis, the global transcriptional profile of E. faecalis OG1RF exposed to ampicillin, bacitracin, cephalotin or vancomycin was obtained via microarrays. Exposure to the β-lactams ampicillin and cephalotin resulted in the fewest transcriptional changes with 50 and 192 genes differentially expressed 60 min after treatment, respect

BACKGROUND: Ampicillin-resistant Enterococcus faecium isolates are reported in increasing numbers in many European hospitals. The clonal complex 17 (CC17) characterized by ampicillin resistance has been associated with nosocomial E. faecium outbreaks and infections in five continents. The aim was to investigate how prevalent ampicillin resistance is in clinical E. faecium isolates from Denmark and to investigate their clonal affiliation, especially to CC17.
METHODS: Microbiology data from 2002 through 2006 on E. faecium and Enterococcus faecalis blood isolates was received from Departments of

Nineteen E. faecium strains isolated from chicken caecum samples, collected in slaughterhouses and highly resistant to vancomycin or gentamicin, were coresistant to erythromycin, and/or tetracyclines, and/or streptogramins, and/or avilamycin. Multiple antibiotic resistance was related to the presence in various combinations of aac(6')-aph(2"), erm(B), emtA, mef(A), tet(L), tet(M), and vanA genes.

Recently increase of enterococcal infections has been observed. These bacteria, mainly Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium are members of the normal flora of gastrointestinal tract but also are typical opportunistic pathogens. Enterococci are characterized by natural resistance to numerous antibiotics (among them cephalosporins), and also by easy acquired resistance to antibiotics. Infections caused by multiresistant strains are difficult in treatment, chronic, recurrent and sometimes fatal are described. Enterococcal infections are caused often by E. faecalis, rarely by E. faecium.

During a 17-week period vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) was found in clinical specimens from 4 in-patients. All bacterial isolates were phenotypically VanA, showing high-level resistance to vancomycin (MIC 256 micrograms/ml) and teicoplanin (MIC 24-256 micrograms/ml). The corresponding gene (vanA) was detected with PCR in strains from 3 of the patients. Three patients had been hospitalized at the renal unit at Orebro Medical Centre Hospital (OMCH). The fourth patient, diagnosed in another hospital, had received treatment in the oncology unit at OMCH. All patients recovered with

We report the isolation of a vancomycin-resistant strain of Enterococcus faecalis, designated AH803, from a 76-year-old Taiwanese woman with pneumonia and bacteremia. This is the first documented clinical isolation of a vancomycin-resistant enterococcus in Taiwan. AH803 was repeatedly isolated from sputum specimens of the patient. AH803 had a high level of vancomycin (minimal inhibitory concentration, MIC = 512 micrograms/mL) and gentamicin (MIC > 2,000 micrograms/mL) resistance, but was susceptible to teicoplanin (MIC = 8 micrograms/mL) and ampicillin (MIC = 2 micrograms/mL). AH803 was shown

Enterococci are a frequent cause of hospital-acquired infection, being associated with urinary tract infections, wound sepsis, bacteremia, and endocarditis. The source of infection is usually thought to be endogenous, but some evidence points to cross-infection between patients. A better understanding of the epidemiology of enterococci has been limited by the lack of a good discriminatory typing system. This report describes the application of two DNA-based typing methods to Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium: comparison of restriction fragments from total DNA by conventional elect
