BACKGROUND: Environmental low frequency noise (LFN < 125 Hz), ubiquitous in urban areas, is an understudied area of exposure science and an overlooked threat to population health. Environmental noise has historically been measured and regulated by A-weighted decibel (dBA) metrics, which more heavily weight frequencies between 2000 and 5000 Hz. Limited research has been conducted to measure and characterize the LFN components of urban environmental noise.
OBJECTIVES: We characterized LFN noise at two urban sites in Greater Boston, Massachusetts (USA) using dBA and full spectrum noise measureme

The physiotherapy curriculum has been modified over the years to address patients, community and health care system needs more fittingly. Recent attention is being paid to the need for an eco-social transition of the profession. This article delves into conceptual frameworks that underpin the urgent need to regenerate the curriculum, fostering a vision of humanity and the planet as deeply interconnected and indivisible. This implies not only becoming aware of the environmental impact of educational and clinical physiotherapy practices but also to reframe education through the lenses of planeta

IMPORTANCE: Structural racism is associated with persistent inequities in health and health outcomes in the US for racial and ethnic minority groups. This review summarizes how structural racism contributes to differential population-level exposure to lung cancer risk factors and thus disparate lung cancer risk across different racial and ethnic groups.
OBSERVATIONS: A scoping review was conducted focusing on structural racism and lung cancer risk for racial and ethnic minority groups. The domains of structural racism evaluated included housing and built environment, occupation and employment

Previous research shows poorer birth outcomes for racial and ethnic minorities and for persons with low socioeconomic status (SES). We evaluated whether mothers in groups at higher risk for poor birth outcomes live in areas of higher air pollution and whether higher exposure to air pollution contributes to poor birth outcomes. An index representing long-term exposure to criteria air pollutants was matched with birth certificate data at the county level for the United States in 1998-1999. We used linear regression to estimate associations between the air pollution index and maternal race and ed

The Mass Incarceration Trauma (MIT) framework is a conceptual model for understanding the role of trauma in the lives of individuals who experience incarceration in the United States. This population faces poverty, violence, and discrimination across the life span. The MIT framework is guided by an ecological systems perspective, a foundational theoretical approach in social work that recognizes that effective assessment and intervention require an understanding of the complex contexts in which individuals live. The MIT framework presents the cumulative trauma exposures commonly faced by this

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic revealed and exacerbated existing social and economic health disparities, and actionable epidemiologic evidence is needed to identify potential vulnerability factors to help inform targeted responses. In this commentary, methodological challenges and opportunities regarding the links between air pollution and COVID-19 are discussed with a focus on 2 factors: 1) the role of differential exposure to air pollution across populations as an explanation for spatiotemporal variability of the epidemic spread and resultant mortality; and 2) the indirect

Ethylene oxide (EtO) is a colorless, flammable, reactive gas commonly used for sterilization and chemical manufacturing. It has become a contaminant of concern for the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) due to an assessment of its toxicity, which found that EtO is more potent than had been previously understood and which also revised the weight-of-evidence classification of EtO from "probably carcinogenic" to "carcinogenic to humans". With the revised toxicity assessment came findings of increased cancer risk to communities near some facilities that emit EtO to ambient air,

BACKGROUND: Approximately 1 in 5 to 1 in 6 Indigenous Australian males are currently imprisoned or have previously been imprisoned. Recent work has also pointed to a widening socio-economic gap within the Indigenous population. Given the myriad social, wellbeing and environmental risk factors associated with justice-involvement, it is conceivable that incarceration may contribute to the increasing disparities found within the Indigenous population. This study aimed to explore the presence and extent of an 'incarceration gap' within the Indigenous population and to uncover which social factors

Obesity and food and nutrition insecurity are increasingly understood as syndemic outcomes of enduring social inequalities. In Brazil, these conditions disproportionately affect Black women in socially vulnerable contexts, due to the intersection of gender, race/ethnicity, and low socioeconomic status. In response, Brazil has launched the new Intersectoral Strategy for Obesity Prevention, which frames obesity as a multidetermined condition shaped by social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors. Grounded in intersectionality and rights-based governance, the Strategy is structured aroun

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this paper, we seek to elucidate the impact of car-free days and events on human health. Car-free days and events are often designed to alleviate the impact of transportation-related air pollution, noise, physical inactivity, traffic congestion, or other detrimental externalities of private motor vehicle travel. We reviewed existing peer-reviewed and gray literature to understand the variety of potential public health impacts that have been measured as a result of car-free days or events and associated changes in environmental exposures and lifestyles.

Arsenic is a naturally occurring toxic element often concentrated in groundwater at levels unsafe for human consumption. Private well water in the United States is mostly unregulated by federal and state drinking water standards. It is the responsibility of the over 13 million U.S. households regularly depending on private wells for their water to ensure it is safe for drinking. There is a consistent graded association with health outcomes at all levels of socioeconomic status (SES) in the U.S. Differential exposure to environmental risk may be contributing to this persistent SES-health gradie

Across the USA, communities have discovered per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) contamination of water supplies, and local responses have varied widely in terms of community involvement and the reaction of government agencies. This research aims to better understand the factors that influence community responses to PFAS contamination by comparing the experiences of two communities impacted by such contamination, Pease Tradeport in Portsmouth, NH, and Hyannis MA. Using 40 in-depth semi-structured qualitative interviews with community members from the Pease Tradeport and Hyannis, we compar

BACKGROUND: Individuals experiencing homelessness endure occupational injustices in the form of marginalization and deprivation at higher rates than their counterparts who are not experiencing homelessness. This population's expressed interests, needs, and desires are frequently ignored or unsolicited by a system of care that continues to exercise power over this fragile and underserved group. Marginalization and deprivation can lead to disempowerment. Few studies have been conducted that explore the perceptions of empowerment by those experiencing homelessness. Providing a "space" for the voi

This paper explores whether the health risks related to air pollution and temperature extremes are spatially and socioeconomically differentiated within three Latin American cities: Bogota, Colombia, Mexico City, Mexico, and Santiago, Chile. Based on a theoretical review of three relevant approaches to risk analysis (risk society, environmental justice, and urban vulnerability as impact), we hypothesize that health risks from exposure to air pollution and temperature in these cities do not necessarily depend on socio-economic inequalities. To test this hypothesis, we gathered, validated, and a

An interdisciplinary environmental assessment team from the Howard University Environmental Justice Partnership (HUEJP) conducted a site visit and assessment of the Defense Depot of Memphis, Tennessee in February of 2000. This depot was built in the late 1940's for storage of numerous chemicals and munitions. As the years progressed, many Memphis citizens have grown to believe that the activities and chemical stockpile located at this site have negatively affected the health environment of their residents. There is anecdotal evidence and documentation of numerous cancers and other illnesses in

The development of air quality management (AQM) strategies provides opportunities to improve public health and reduce health inequalities. This study evaluates health and inequality impacts of alternate SO2 control strategies in Detroit, MI, a designated non-attainment area. Control alternatives include uniform reductions across sources, ranking approaches based on total emissions and health impacts per ton of pollutant emitted, and optimizations that meet concentration and health goals. Using dispersion modeling and quantitative health impact assessment (HIA), these strategies are evaluated i

Unequal exposure to air pollution by race and socioeconomic status is well-documented in the U.S. However, relatively little research has examined inequities in the collection of PM2.5 data, creating a critical gap in understanding which neighborhood exposures are represented in these data sets. In this study, we use multilevel models with random intercepts by county and state, stratified by urbanicity, to assess associations between six key environmental justice (EJ) attributes (%AIAN, %Asian, %Black, %Hispanic, %White, %Poverty) at the census tract level and proximity to the nearest regulato
