Systemic sclerosis: environmental factors.

Epidemiological evidence for the association between environmental and occupational risk factors and systemic sclerosis (SSc) has been extensively analyzed. Such exposures are frequently of long duration, and the inadequate classification of the type of exposure and other confounding variables may bias their estimated association with SSc. Environmental factors could be classified as occupational (silica, organic solvents), infectious (bacterial, viral), and non-occupational/non-infectious (drugs, pesticides, silicones). Understanding the link between environmental risk factors and the develop

Environmental epidemiology of essential tremor.

BACKGROUND: Essential tremor (ET) is one of the most common neurological disorders. Despite this, the disease mechanisms and etiology are not well understood. While susceptibility genotypes undoubtedly underlie many ET cases, no ET genes have been identified thus far. As with many other progressive, degenerative neurological disorders, it is likely that environmental factors contribute to the etiology of ET. Environmental epidemiology is the study in specific populations or communities of the effect on human health of physical, biologic and chemical factors in the external environment. The pur

Environmental contaminants and pregnancy outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To review selected environmental, occupational, and other important risk factors for the following adverse pregnancy outcomes: low birth weight (LBW), intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), and preterm delivery (PTD). DESIGN: The evidence is explored in greater detail for environmental tobacco smoke, drinking water disinfection byproducts, and organochlorine (DDT) and organophosphate pesticides, partly using a weight of evidence approach. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Low birth weight and IUGR are surrogate measures of fetal growth that are determined at delivery. Low birth weight is

Environmental issues in managing asthma.

Management of asthma requires attention to environmental exposures both indoors and outdoors. Americans spend most of their time indoors, where they have a greater ability to modify their environment. The indoor environment contains both pollutants (eg, particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, secondhand smoke, and ozone) and allergens from furred pets, dust mites, cockroaches, rodents, and molds. Indoor particulate matter consists of particles generated from indoor sources such as cooking and cleaning activities, and particles that penetrate from the outdoors. Nitrogen dioxide sources include ga

[Environmental factors and parkinsonian syndrome].

Particular emphasis has been in recent years placed on the study of an integrating role of medicine in the prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of diseases associated with the influence of environmental factors. Among nervous system diseases associated with the adverse influence of environmental factors, the parkinsonian syndrome has been the particular concern, which is due to its higher incidence rates and early disability in able-bodied persons. In this connection, the purpose of the study was to review the data available in the literature on the neurotoxicity of heavy metals and othe

[Environmental factors in Asperger syndrome].

This paper reviews what is currently known about the environmental factors in Asperger syndrome that is a neurodevelopmental disorder of genetic origins. Its characteristics tend to occur in families of those with the syndrome. The rate of complications during pregnancy or the neonatal period in the patients with Asperger syndrome was about the same as that in the control group. It is true that their involvement in their outer world could not influence the core social deficits very much. But it might facilitate the appearance of the second symptoms such as dissociation, anxiety, depression, pe

Environmental determinants of Parkinson's disease.

Increasing toxicologic and epidemiologic evidence suggests that pesticides and other environmental exposures are associated with idiopathic Parkinson's disease. Using a case-control study, the authors examined the impact of farming, pesticide use, rural residence, and well water use (including critical periods of childhood exposure) on the risk of Parkinson's disease. After adjustment for confounding, > or = 40 years of well-water exposure (compared to no well water use) was associated with an increased risk of Parkinson's disease (OR = 7.1; 95% CI: 2.3-22.1). The authors found an increased ri

Photocatalytic coatings for environmental applications.

A series of nano- and micronparticle-grade anatase and rutile titanium dioxide pigments have been prepared with various densities of surface treatments, particle size and surface area. Their photocatalytic activites have been determined in a series of paint films by FTIR, chalking, color, gloss change and weight loss after artifical weathering. The pigments have also been examined by rapid assessment methodologies using photodielectric microwave spectroscopy, 2-propanol oxidation and hydroxyl analysis. The microwave response under light and dark cycles provides an extended timescale probe of c

Mesothelioma associated with environmental exposures.

BACKGROUND: The main sources of environmental, non-occupational exposure to asbestos or asbestiform fibres are: a) industrial plants in which asbestos was used in the production process; b) asbestos "in place" (mainly in buildings); c) contaminated soils. The association of these exposures with increasing risk of mesothelioma has been documented since 1960 in many places. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: The present paper is aimed at describing the main results of studies performed in the locations with soils naturally contaminated with asbestos or asbestiform fibres. Environmental exposure data and a

Environmental risk assessment of paroxetine.

Paroxetine hydrochloride hemihydrate (the active ingredient in Paxil) is a pharmaceutical compound used for the treatment of depression, social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. Paroxetine (PA) is extensively metabolized in humans, with about 97% of the parent compound being excreted as metabolites through the urine and feces of patients. Therefore PA and metabolites have the potential to be discharged into wastewater treatment systems after therapeutic use. PA and its major human metabolite (PM) were investigated using studies d

Epidemiology of environmental and occupational cancer.

Environmental carcinogens, in a strict sense, include outdoor and indoor air pollutants, as well as soil and drinking water contaminants. An increased risk of mesothelioma has consistently been detected among individuals experiencing residential exposure to asbestos, while results for lung cancer are less consistent. Several good-quality studies have investigated lung cancer risk from outdoor air pollution based on measurement of specific agents. Their results tend to show an increased risk in the categories at highest exposure, with relative risks in the range 1.5. A causal association has be

Dietary antioxidants and environmental stress.

Air is one of our most important natural resources; however, it is also in the front line for receiving environmental pollution. Air quality decreased markedly following the industrial revolution, but it was not until the great London Smog in 1952 that air quality made it onto the political agenda. The introduction of the Clean Air Act in 1956 led to dramatic decreases in black smoke and SO2 concentrations over the next two decades, as domestic and industrial coal-burning activities ceased. However, as these improvements progressed, a new threat to public health was being released into the air

Environmental exposure and leptospirosis, Peru.

Human infection by leptospires has highly variable clinical manifestations, which range from subclinical infection to fulminant disease. We conducted a population-based, cross-sectional seroepidemiologic study in Peru to determine potential relationships of environmental context to human exposure to Leptospira and disease associated with seroconversion. Three areas were studied: a flooded, urban slum in the Peruvian Amazon city of Iquitos; rural, peri-Iquitos villages; and a desert shantytown near Lima. Seroprevalence in Belen was 28% (182/650); in rural areas, 17% (52/316); and in a desert sh

Environmental concerns and diet in Singapore.

Many factors affect how people perceive the world and their environment, and how such perceptions affect lifestyle decisions, yet the relationship between personal perceptions about environmental hazards and diet is rarely examined. In this study, environmental concerns on a local and global scale were examined, along with dietary patterns, to determine if there were associations and age-related differences. The hypothesis that concerns about water pollution might be reflected in choices about seafood consumption was examined. Many aspects of dietary choices varied significantly by age, includ

Advances in environmental and occupational disorders.

The environment plays a crucial role in determining the development and expression of allergic disorders. Epidemiologic studies allow us to understand risk factors for allergic disease, which may lead to interventional studies to provide the evidence base for our clinical advice. Articles published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology last year highlighted the relevance of mold exposure and environmental tobacco smoke as risk factors for the development of asthma and the expression of symptoms. The role of fitted carpets as a reservoir for house dust allergens was also challenged

Environmental factors in Parkinson's disease.

Evidence discussed in this review article lends strong support in favor of an etiologic role of environmentalfactors in Parkinson's disease. First, thanks to the discovery of MPTP (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine), it is now clear that, by targeting the nigrostriatal system, neurotoxicants can reproduce the neurochemical and pathological features of idiopathic parkinsonism. The sequence of toxic events triggered by MPTP has also provided us with intriguing clues concerning mechanisms of toxicant selectivity and nigrostriatal vulnerability. Relevant examples are (i) the role of the

Iodine: an environmental trigger of thyroiditis.

Like most autoimmune diseases of humans, chronic lymphocytic (Hashimoto's) thyroiditis results from the combination of a genetic predisposition and an environmental trigger. A body of clinical and epidemiologic evidence points to excessive ingestion of iodine as an environmental agent. In genetically determined thyroiditis in animals, iodine enrichment has been shown to increase the incidence and severity of disease. Its mechanism of action is still uncertain. Using a new animal model of autoimmune thyroiditis, the NOD.H2(h4) mouse, we have been able to show that iodine enhances disease in a d

Environmental control of allergic diseases.

Allergic disease affects millions of persons in the United States. Environmental control measures are essential for persons who are sensitive to dust mite and cat allergens and may be important in persons who are sensitive to cockroaches and fungus. The bedroom is the most important room in which to implement environmental control measures, such as encasing mattresses and pillows in vinyl or semipermeable covers. Patients with asthma (especially persistent asthma) should be considered for allergy testing and more aggressive environmental control measures. Carpet in the bedroom or over concrete

Occupational and environmental thoracic malignancies.

Lung cancer is the most common thoracic malignancy caused by exposures at work and in the environment. The most unique thoracic malignancy is mesothelioma, because it is relatively rare and one of only a few neoplasms for which one specific inciting agent-asbestos-has been identified. Based on epidemiologic studies, approximately 15% of lung cancers in men and 5% of lung cancers in women are caused by occupational exposures. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has devised a rating system by which, based on animal and human data, they assign an agent, mixture, or exposure circumstan
