[Inhibitors of proteolytic enzymes in the blood serum of patients with diphyllobothriasis].

The proteinase inhibitors alpha 1-protease inhibitor (alpha 1-antitrypsin) and alpha 2-macroglobulin have been determined in 24 patients with diphyllobothriasis (D. latum and D. dendriticum), with their activity expressed in conventional units per ml serum inhibiting or binding the activity of 1 unit of trypsin, respectively. The specific activity of alpha 1-protease inhibitor and alpha 2-macroglobulin proved to be twice (46.2%) and thrice (32.7%) lower, respectively, despite a significant decrease in the total protein serum level. The ratio between these 2 parameters was 9.86 +/- 1.4, it bein

Dyslipoproteinemia and an inhibitor of lipolytic enzymes in Weber-Christian disease.

Hyperlipidemia of initially Type V and finally of Type III was observed in a patient with Weber-Christian disease. The lipoprotein lipase (LpL) and hepatic triglyceride lipase (HTGL) activities of the post-heparin plasma were low, but detectable. Both lipase activities were higher when assayed with 20 microliters of post-heparin plasma than with more than 30 microliters, indicating the presence of some inhibitory factor in the plasma. This plasma inhibited purified LpL and HTGL from human post-heparin plasma. Zonal ultracentrifugation studies showed that the inhibitor of hepatic lipase was ass

[The value of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors in the treatment of hypertension].

Numerous trials have shown the efficacy of ACE-inhibitors in moderate and severe essential hypertension. Their use must be regarded as very promising. They lower peripheral vascular resistance without influencing cardiac index and heart rate. Additionally, they maintain serum potassium and do not effect plasma lipids or provoke diabetes mellitus or gout. In 20-30% of hypertensive patients ACE-inhibitors have to be combined with diuretics and/or calcium antagonists. The addition of beta-blockers is useful in patients with resting tachycardia. In mild hypertension the use of ACE-inhibitors as fi

Clinical experience with the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor captopril.

1. Sixty-two patients (nineteen mild-moderate, forty-three severe hypertension) were treated with captopril. 2. Blood pressure was controlled long term (with/without diuretics/beta-adrenoreceptor blocking drugs) in sixteen out of nineteen patients with mild-moderate hypertension. Two patients complained of dysguesia. 3. Long term control (with/without other drugs) was achieved in thirty out of forty-three patients with severe or accelerated hypertension, many of whom had associated renal or renovascular disease. Side-effects were common: five rash, five dysguesia, two rash and dysguesia, two r

Impact of angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors on intracranial aneurysm endovascular treatment outcome.

PURPOSE: Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEis) are commonly prescribed antihypertensive medications. They also possess antiplatelet properties. The aim of this single-center retrospective observational cohort study was to analyze whether intake of ACEis may increase the risk of incomplete aneurysm occlusion after this treatment modality. METHODS: We retrospectively included patients hospitalized between January 2015 and June 2024 with unruptured intracranial aneurysm, who underwent endovascular treatment with coiling or Flow Diverter (FD) placement. Imaging data (at 6 months and 18

Sex Differences in Reported Adverse Drug Reactions to Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors.

The normal human retina contains several classes of photosensitive cell-rods for low-light vision, three cone classes for daylight vision, and intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) expressing melanopsin for non-image-forming functions, including pupil control, melatonin suppression, and circadian photoentrainment. The spectral sensitivities of the photoreceptors overlap significantly, which means that most lights will stimulate all photoreceptors to varying degrees. The method of silent substitution is a powerful tool for stimulating individual photoreceptor classes sele

A Rare Case of Unilateral Tongue Edema with Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors.

Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) are widely used for the treatment of multiple conditions such as hypertension, heart failure and chronic kidney disease. Angioedema is a rare but potentially fatal complication of ACEi use and unilateral tongue edema is a very rare presentation. We report a case of a 55-year-old man, with a history of hypertension, on enalapril for three years, who presented to the hospital with unilateral tongue swelling, without airway compromise. Other causes were excluded and the diagnosis of angioedema due to enalapril was established. The patient was discha

Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) Inhibitors and Pancreatitis: A Potential Dose-dependent Relationship.

UNLABELLED: Acute pancreatitis (AP) remains one of the most common causes of emergency department visits in the USA. The literature supports an association between angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi), mainly at steady-state doses, and AP[1]. We present a case of recurrent AP and pseudocyst formation following multiple ACEi dose adjustments after a steady-state period lasting for over a decade. Previous reports have rarely described ACEi-induced pancreatitis and pseudocyst development. ACEi can cause significant ductal obstruction[2] and fluid retention due to its angioedema effects

Acylated sulfonamide adenosines as potent inhibitors of the adenylate-forming enzyme superfamily.

The superfamily of adenylate-forming enzymes all share a common chemistry. They activate a carboxylate group, on a specific substrate, by catalyzing the formation of a high energy mixed phosphoanhydride-linked nucleoside intermediate. Members of this diverse enzymatic family play key roles in a variety of metabolic pathways and therefore many have been regarded as drug targets. A generic approach to inhibit such enzymes is the use of non-hydrolysable sulfur-based bioisosteres of the adenylate intermediate. Here we compare the activity of compounds containing a sulfamoyl and sulfonamide linker

Pharmacogenetics of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors in Patients with Alzheimer's Disease Dementia.

BACKGROUND: While the angiotensin-converting enzyme degrades amyloid-β, angiotensinconverting enzyme inhibitors (ACEis) may slow cognitive decline by way of cholinergic effects, by increasing brain substance P and boosting the activity of neprilysin, and by modulating glucose homeostasis and augmenting the secretion of adipokines to enhance insulin sensitivity in patients with Alzheimer's disease dementia (AD). We aimed to investigate whether ACE gene polymorphisms rs1800764 and rs4291 are associated with cognitive and functional change in patients with AD, while also taking APOE haplotypes an

Evaluation of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors by SPR biosensor and theoretical studies.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor has been utilized for monitoring analyte-ligand interactions in modern drug discovery processes. SPR biosensors measure the change in refractive indexes over the course of analyte molecules' binding to a specific immobilized ligand on sensor chip. This effort highlights a comprehensive SPR study besides enzymatic assay for discovery of new Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors via screening of medicinal plants. At first, five medicinal plants were selected as potential sources for developing new ACE inhibitors through hydrolyzing hippuryl-L-hi

Antioxidative sulphated polygalactans from marine macroalgae as angiotensin-I converting enzyme inhibitors.

Antioxidant and antihypertensive potential of the sulphated polygalactans isolated from the marine macroalgae Kappaphycus alvarezii and Gracilaria opuntia were assessed by utilising different in vitro systems. The galactans isolated from K. alvarezii possessed significantly greater antioxidative properties as determined by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH IC90 0.97 mg/mL) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS.+ IC90 0.72 mg/mL) scavenging activities than those isolated from G. opuntia (DPPH IC90 1.2 mg/mL and ABTS 0.86 mg/mL). Tryptophan-containing dipeptides are C-domain selective inhibitors of angiotensin converting enzyme.

Somatic angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) contains two active sites, the C- and N-domain, from which the C-domain is supposed to play a major role in blood pressure regulation and is therefore a promising pharmacological target to reduce blood pressure without side-effects. We report for the first time that tryptophan-containing dipeptides such as Ile-Trp or Val-Trp, which were recently found in food protein hydrolysates, are selective and competitive inhibitors for the C-domain with a selectivity factor of 40 and 70, respectively. Structure-activity studies showed that an N-terminal aliphat

Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors versus angiotensin receptor blockers for primary hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) are widely prescribed for primary hypertension (systolic blood pressure > 140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure > 90 mmHg). However, while ACE inhibitors have been shown to reduce mortality and morbidity in placebo-controlled trials, ARBs have not. Therefore, a comparison of the efficacies of these two drug classes in primary hypertension for preventing total mortality and cardiovascular events is important. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effects of ACE inhibitors and ARBs on total mortal

Steroid synthesis by Taenia crassiceps WFU cysticerci is regulated by enzyme inhibitors.

Cysticerci and tapeworms from Taenia crassiceps WFU, ORF and Taenia solium synthesize sex-steroid hormones in vitro. Corticosteroids increase the 17β-estradiol synthesis by T. crassiceps cysticerci. T. crassiceps WFU cysticerci synthesize corticosteroids, mainly 11-deoxycorticosterone (DOC). The aim of this work was to investigate whether classical steroidogenic inhibitors modify the capacity of T. crassiceps WFU cysticerci to synthesize corticosteroids and sex steroid hormones. For this purpose, T. crassiceps WFU cysticerci were obtained from the abdominal cavity of mice, pre-cultured for 24h

Radiation damage to the lung: mitigation by angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.

Concern regarding accidental overexposure to radiation has been raised after the devastating Tohuku earthquake and tsunami which initiated the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan in March 2011. Radiation exposure is toxic and can be fatal depending on the dose received. Injury to the lung is often reported as part of multi-organ failure in victims of accidental exposures. Doses of radiation >8 Gray to the chest can induce pneumonitis with right ventricular hypertrophy starting after ∼2 months. Higher doses may be followed by pulmonary fibrosis that presents months to years after exposu

Statins but not angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors delay progression of aortic stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Recently, statins and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) have been shown to slow aortic valve calcium accumulation. Although several studies also suggest that statins may reduce the hemodynamic progression of aortic stenosis (AS), no data are available for ACEIs or the combination of both. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 211 consecutive patients (aged 70+/-10 years, 104 females) with native AS, defined by a peak velocity >2.5 m/s (valve area 0.84+/-0.23 cm(2), mean gradient 42+/-19 mm Hg), with normal left ventricular function and no other significant valvular lesion
