COVID-19 mortality in an area of northeast Brazil: epidemiological characteristics and prospective spatiotemporal modelling.

This study aimed to analyse the spatial-temporal distribution of COVID-19 mortality in Sergipe, Northeast, Brazil. It was an ecological study utilising spatiotemporal analysis techniques that included all deaths confirmed by COVID-19 in Sergipe, from 2 April to 14 June 2020. Mortality rates were calculated per 100 000 inhabitants and the temporal trends were analysed using a segmented log-linear model. For spatial analysis, the Kernel estimator was used and the crude mortality rates were smoothed by the empirical Bayesian method. The space-time prospective scan statistics applied the Poisson's

Kernel-density estimation and approximate Bayesian computation for flexible epidemiological model fitting in Python.

Fitting complex models to epidemiological data is a challenging problem: methodologies can be inaccessible to all but specialists, there may be challenges in adequately describing uncertainty in model fitting, the complex models may take a long time to run, and it can be difficult to fully capture the heterogeneity in the data. We develop an adaptive approximate Bayesian computation scheme to fit a variety of epidemiologically relevant data with minimal hyper-parameter tuning by using an adaptive tolerance scheme. We implement a novel kernel density estimation scheme to capture both dispersed

Epidemiological dynamic modeling of human papillomavirus-related diseases to assess vaccination strategies in Argentina.

Our objective was to develop and test a dynamic simulation model of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related diseases to assess rational vaccination strategies in Argentina. A dynamic stochastic transmission model for hetero- and homosexual transmission of HPV oncogenic and low-risk oncogenic types among females and males was developed. The model included HPV transmission and vaccination, the natural history of HPV-related diseases, disease outcomes, and cervical cancer screening. Considering all cervical cancers, covered or not by the current quadrivalent vaccine, the existing coverage rate would l

Estimated Impact of Screening on Gonorrhea Epidemiology in the United States: Insights From a Mathematical Model.

UNLABELLED: The burden of gonorrhea infections in the United States is high. There are marked disparities by race/ethnicity and sexual orientation. We quantified the impact of screening and treatment on gonorrhea rates in the US population aged 15 to 39 years for the period 2000 to 2015 and estimated the impact that alternative screening strategies might have had over the same period. METHODS: We developed a national-level transmission model that divides the population by race/ethnicity, preferred gender of sex partners, age, gender, and sexual activity level. We compared our fitted model ("b

Development of outdoor exposure model of traffic-related air pollution for epidemiologic research in Japan.

We developed an exposure estimation model for an epidemiological study on the effect of traffic-related air pollutants on respiratory diseases. The model estimates annual average outdoor concentration of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and elemental carbon (EC). The model is composed of three nested plume dispersion type submodels treating different spatial scales from a few meters to tens of kilometers. The emissions from road traffic was estimated at high spatial resolution along the paths of roads taking into account the effects of individual building shape and traffic signals to secure accuracy near

Predicting the impact of long-term temperature changes on the epidemiology and control of schistosomiasis: a mechanistic model.

BACKGROUND: Many parasites of medical and veterinary importance are transmitted by cold-blooded intermediate hosts or vectors, the abundance of which will vary with ambient temperatures, potentially altering disease prevalence. In particular, if global climate change will increase mean ambient temperature in a region endemic with a human pathogen then it is possible that the incidence of disease will similarly increase. Here we examine this possibility by using a mathematical model to explore the effects of increasing long-term mean ambient temperature on the prevalence and abundance of the pa

A Bayesian approach to functional-based multilevel modeling of longitudinal data: applications to environmental epidemiology.

Flexible multilevel models are proposed to allow for cluster-specific smooth estimation of growth curves in a mixed-effects modeling format that includes subject-specific random effects on the growth parameters. Attention is then focused on models that examine between-cluster comparisons of the effects of an ecologic covariate of interest (e.g. air pollution) on nonlinear functionals of growth curves (e.g. maximum rate of growth). A Gibbs sampling approach is used to get posterior mean estimates of nonlinear functionals along with their uncertainty estimates. A second-stage ecologic random-eff

Cancer risk assessment for 1,3-butadiene: dose-response modeling from an epidemiological perspective.

The dose-response assessment of the association between 1,3-butadiene (BD) and leukemia mortality among workers in the North American synthetic rubber industry is explored. Analyses are based on the most recent University of Alabama at Birmingham epidemiological study and exposure estimation. The U.S. EPA Science Advisory Board recommendations of using the most recent data and giving consideration to peak exposures to BD have been followed. If cumulative BD ppm-years is to be used as the predictor of the leukemia rate ratio, then the performance of that predictor is statistically significantly

Epidemiology and Risk Modelling of Influenza A Virus Within and Between Pig Herds in Northern Lao PDR.

Animal-origin influenza A virus (IAV) is a perennial candidate for causing the next pandemic. With high risk for interspecies IAV transmission but limited resources for surveillance, particularly in rural areas of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as Laos, there is a need to develop targeted, risk-based strategies for early detection of novel IAVs that may emerge in pigs. We conducted (1) a cross-sectional survey to characterise pig producer types, management practices and pig movement patterns; (2) sampling among pigs in slaughterhouses to quantify IAV seroprevalence and infection

Modeling infodemics on a global scale: A 30 countries study using epidemiological and social listening data.

Infodemics represent a significant threat to public health, arising from complex interactions between online and offline phenomena. The continuous feedback loops between digital information ecosystems and real-world contingencies make infodemics particularly challenging to define operationally, measure, and eventually model in quantitative terms. This study aims to evaluate the effect of various epidemic-related variables on the dynamics of the COVID-19 infodemic, using a regression modeling framework applied to data from 30 countries across diverse income groups. We use World Health Organizat

An Immuno-Epidemiological Model of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in the African Buffalo Population with Carrier Transmission.

In this paper, we present a novel immuno-epidemiological model, linking host-pathogen interactions at within-host and population scales for foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) in its natural host, African buffalo. Endemic persistence of FMD in buffalo populations is facilitated by chronic infections in carrier hosts: Upon exposure to the virus, buffalo become acutely infected, followed by either viral clearance and recovery with immunity, or persistent infection for several months. In our model, we divide the infectious population based upon these two stages, acute and carrier infection, so th

The effect of tranexamic acid during childbirth on maternal mortality: an epidemiological modelling and cost-effectiveness study.

BACKGROUND: Tranexamic acid reduces life-threatening bleeding after childbirth. We aimed to identify the settings where tranexamic acid cost-effectively reduces maternal deaths from bleeding. METHODS: We used WHO mortality data and effect estimates from our individual patient data meta-analysis to develop an epidemiological and cost-effectiveness model to calculate the absolute benefit (postpartum haemorrhage deaths averted) and potential harm (deaths from inadvertent intrathecal tranexamic acid injection) in each country, if all women received 1 g intravenous tranexamic acid when giving birt

Osteomyelitis related lameness across animal species: pathophysiology, etiology, epidemiology and experimental model approaches.

Osteomyelitis is an inflammatory disorder resulting from the invasion of opportunistic pathogens into bones and bone marrows, causing necrosis and affecting multiple animal groups. It represents one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal diseases, imposing substantial economic losses and raising significant animal welfare concerns across livestock and poultry industries. The pathophysiology of osteomyelitis is characterized by mechanisms of disease development, clinical age, the specific anatomic site in the bone, and structural differences between adults and juveniles. The inability of animals

Understanding the direct and indirect impacts of disease response phenotypes on chicken coccidiosis epidemiology: A modelling approach.

Coccidiosis, a widespread disease in poultry caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Eimeria, leads to significant economic losses. The increasing resistance of Eimeria species to anti-parasitics, combined with the high cost of vaccines, underscores the need for alternative intervention strategies against coccidiosis. This article explores the relative impact of several traits on the health of the group, accounting for the population dynamics of the infection. We focus on five traits that can potentially be influenced by genetic selection, treatment, vaccination or nutrition: (1) susceptibi

Significance of the ARIMA epidemiological modeling to predict the rate of HIV and AIDS in the Kumba Health District of Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: AIDS is a severe medical condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that primarily attacks the immune system, specifically CD4+ T lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell crucial for immune response), monocyte macrophages, and dendritic cells. This disease has significant health and socio-economic implications and is one of the primary causes of illness and death globally (UNAIDS, 2022). It presents significant challenges for public health and population well-being, both in developed and developing countries. By conducting a time series analysis, this research seeks

Multiscale geographically weighted modeling of tuberculosis incidence in China: integrating geographic perspectives into epidemiological analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major global health problem, and the pathogenesis of TB is determined by multiple variables. The complicated relationship between geographic determinants and incidence rates is poorly understood, and multicollinearity and spatial heterogeneity were not considered when exploring this relationship. METHODS: In this study, the factors influencing the incidence of TB in China were investigated, considering spatial heterogeneity, to develop a multidimensional TB indicator system that incorporates geographic factors. Health workforce needs in Malawi: analysis of the Thanzi La Onse integrated epidemiological model of care.

BACKGROUND: To make the best use of health resources, it is crucial to understand the healthcare needs of a population-including how needs will evolve and respond to changing epidemiological context and patient behaviour-and how this compares to the capabilities to deliver healthcare with the existing workforce. Existing approaches to planning either rely on using observed healthcare demand from a fixed historical period or using models to estimate healthcare needs within a narrow domain (e.g., a specific disease area or health programme). A new data-grounded modelling method is proposed by wh
