Dissolution and gasification behavior of thermosetting resin in molten alkali hydroxide.

Dissolution and gasification behavior of thermosetting resin in molten alkali hydroxide was examined to design a gasification recycle system. Effective recycling methods have not yet been established for thermosetting resins, which are predominantly incinerated, landfilled, or exported overseas. The dissolution behavior of thermosetting resins, phenolic, polyurethane and epoxy resins, in molten alkali hydroxide was examined by dissolving them as organic carbon in molten alkali hydroxide to reduce the volume and convert them into fuel gases, such as hydrogen and methane. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH)

Enhancing the mechanical and tribological properties of epoxy composites via incorporation of reactive bio-based epoxy functionalized graphene oxide.

The high rigidity and brittleness of traditional thermosetting resin based on bisphenol epoxy limits its many potential technical applications. Here, a novel tertiary amine containing cardanol-based epoxy resin (NC-514-DEA) was synthesized by reaction of diethanolamine (DEA) with cardanol epoxy resin (NC-514). Moreover, NC-514-DEA modified graphene oxide (GOND) was prepared and used as a reactive nano-reinforcing filler for epoxy composites. The results show that, compared with neat epoxy resin, the fracture toughness of the epoxy composite with 0.5 wt% GOND is increased by nearly 10%, and the

Bio-Based Fluorescent Epoxies: Emission Control through Molecular Packing and Phase Separation.

This study demonstrates the sustainable conversion of agricultural waste into high-performance fluorescent epoxy resins through direct blending of coumaric acid epoxy (CE) and ferulic acid epoxy (FE) derived from corn stover. These bio-based resins exhibit tunable photoluminescence, with emission maxima shifting from 299 nm to 841 nm as FE content increases from 0 to 33 wt%. In contrast, blends based on commercial bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE) reach emission saturation around 550 nm and exhibit phase separation at higher FE concentrations, as confirmed by light microscopy. The synthesiz

Effects of Block Copolymer Terminal Groups on Toughening Epoxy-Based Composites: Microstructures and Toughening Mechanisms.

Despite the considerable research attention paid to block copolymer (BCP)-toughened epoxy resins, the effects of their terminal groups on their phase structure are not thoroughly understood. This study fills this gap by closely examining the effects of amino and carboxyl groups on the fracture toughness of epoxy resins at different temperatures. Through the combination of scanning electron microscopy and digital image correlation (DIC), it was found that the amino-terminated BCP was capable of forming a stress-distributing network in pure epoxy resin, resulting in better toughening effects at

Investigation of the elastic modulus, tensile and flexural strength of five skull simulant materials for impact testing of a forensic skin/skull/brain model.

Conducting in vitro research for forensic, impact and injury simulation modelling generally involves the use of a skull simulant with mechanical properties similar to those found in the human skull. For this study epoxy resin, fibre filled epoxy resin, 3D-printing filaments (PETG, PLA) and self-cure acrylic denture base resin were used to fabricate the specimens (n=20 per material group), according to ISO 527-2 IBB and ISO20795-1. Tensile and flexural testing in a universal testing machine was used to measure their tensile/flexural elastic modulus and strength. The results showed that the epox

Epoxy-dermatitis in a ski-stick factory.

In a Finnish ski-stick factory with 293 employees, several persons had skin symptoms compatible with contact allergy. Epoxy resin proved to be the only potential allergen in the working environment. The results of the study point to the important rôle of ski-stick saw dust as the source of sensitizing, partly cured epoxy resin. The study also showed that not only hardeners, but also epoxy resin can cause immediate type of allergy.

A biomechanical comparison between human calvarial bone and a skull simulant considering the role of attached periosteum and dura mater.

PURPOSE: Current forensic analysis of blunt force trauma relies on the use of cadaveric or animal tissues, posing ethical and reproducibility concerns. Artificial substitutes may help overcome such issues. However, existing substitutes exhibit poor anatomic and mechanical biofidelity, especially in the choice of skull simulant material. Progress has been made in identifying materials that have similar mechanical properties to the human skull bone, with the potential to behave similarly in mechanical loading. AIMS: To compare the biomechanical properties of the human calvarial bone with an epo

Tailoring the Fire-Retardant Efficacy of Intumescent Coatings via Optimal Selection of Epoxy Binder Molecular Weight.

Epoxy resins are widely used as binders in intumescent fire-retardant coatings; however, the effect of their molecular weight on the fire-retardant performance of coatings with different intumescent mechanisms remains insufficiently understood. In this study, five commercial bisphenol A-based epoxy resins with number-average molecular weights (Mn) ranging from 375 to 1520 g/mol were characterized by HPLC, NMR, DSC, and TGA, and subsequently formulated into intumescent coatings of two types: classical ammonium polyphosphate/pentaerythritol/melamine (APP/PER/MEL) systems and expandable graphite

Glycine-Ti3C2Tx Hybrid Material Improves the Electrochemical Corrosion Resistance of a Water-Borne Epoxy Coating.

Improving the dispersibility and compatibility of nanomaterials in water-borne epoxy resins is an important means to improve the protection ability and corrosion resistance of coatings. In this study, glycine-functionalized Ti3C2Tx (GT) was used to prepare an epoxy composite coating. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that glycine was successfully modified. The scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy results showed that the aggregation of Ti3C2Tx was alleviated. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy test results show t

Allergenicity of epoxy-reactive diluents in the guinea pig.

The sensitizer in epoxy resins may be the actual resin, the hardeners, the reactive diluents or the additives. An epoxy-reactive diluent, Epoxide No. 8, recently introduced on the Swedish market, and described by the manufacturer as nonsensitizing was checked for allergenicity by "the guinea pig maximization test". Judging from the results, Epoxide No. 8 in the guinea pig test was even more allergenic than butylglycidyl ether, another reactive diluent known to be a human skin sensitizer. The potential allergenicity of Epoxide No. 8 was also indicated by the fact that butylglycidyl ether, cresy

Lignin-polyphenol epoxy layer: a multi-functional protective coating cascade-constructed by ionic liquids.

Industrial lignin-derived polyphenols are promising platform chemicals, especially as bisphenol A substitutes for bio-resin production. Nevertheless, there is an urgent need to address the issues caused by traditional volatile and toxic epoxy curing agents. Herein, a novel lignin-polyphenol epoxy layer with multi-functional protective performances was successfully constructed through cascade reactions by ionic liquids (ILs). Specifically, lignin polyphenol obtained from demethylation of alkali lignin in ethanolamine acetate was cross-combined with salicylol (SA) and epichlorohydrin to synthesi

A Novel Preparation Method of Composite Bolted T-Joint with High Bending Performance Based on the Prepreg-RTM Co-Curing Process.

A co-curing resin system consisting of 9368 epoxy resin for prepreg and 6808 epoxy resin for resin transfer molding (RTM) was developed. A corresponding preparation method for a novel polymer composite bolted T-joint with internal skeleton and external skin was proposed based on the prepreg-RTM co-curing process, and novel T-joints were fabricated. A series of conventional configuration T-joints based on the RTM process and T-joints made of 2A12 aluminum alloy were prepared simultaneously. Bending performances were studied on these T-joints experimentally. The results indicate that 9368 epoxy

Simultaneous Enhancement of Flame Resistance and Antimicrobial Activity in Epoxy Nanocomposites Containing Phosphorus and Silver-Based Additives.

The design and manufacture of innovative multifunctional materials possessing superior characteristics, quality and standards, rigorously required for future development of existing or emerging advanced technologies, is of great importance. These materials should have a very low degree of influence (or none) on the environmental and human health. Adjusting the properties of epoxy resins with organophosphorus compounds and silver-containing additives is key to the simultaneous improvement of the flame-resistant and antimicrobial properties of advanced epoxy-based materials. These environmentall
