BACKGROUND: Despite adherence to reprocessing protocols, duodenoscopes frequently remain contaminated, highlighting significant knowledge gaps in reprocessing efficiency.
AIM: To identify risk factors in duodenoscope reprocessing procedures affecting contamination rates.
METHODS: Cultures from Pentax ED34-i10T2 duodenoscopes collected between February 2022 and December 2023 were included. Contamination was determined by the presence of micro-organisms of gut or oral origin (MGO). Data on duodenoscope use, reprocessing lead times and personnel were retrieved from electronic medical records. R

BACKGROUND: When processing surgical instruments after use, the safe, residue-free removal of blood and blood-containing soiling is one of the most important tasks. There are recommendations from various working groups regarding the ideal timeframe for cleaning used instruments in order to ensure safe disinfection and sterilization and avoid adverse effects. These are generally based primarily on practical experience and there is little systematic work on this topic.
AIM: In the present study, cleaning experiments with test specimens previously contaminated with sheep's blood were performed,

INTRODUCTION: Shot peening is widely used for surface treatment of hip implants. Shot peening with steel balls followed by a cleaning process with glass beads is used for introduction of negative stress in the production of morse taper junctions of the MRP-Titan stem. An increasing number of publications in maxillofacial surgery and orthopaedic surgery show that there is a significant contamination of Alumina or glass blasted surfaces. Latest research suggested an association between contaminant particles with early loosening of endoprostheses (third body wear). The aim of this study is to eva

Ten low-capacity slaughterhouses were examined for Listeria by collecting a total of 373 samples, of which 50, 250, and 73 were taken from carcasses, pluck sets, and the slaughterhouse environment, respectively. Six slaughterhouses and 9% of all samples were positive for Listeria monocytogenes. Of the samples taken from pluck sets, 9% were positive for L. monocytogenes, the highest prevalence occurring in tongue and tonsil samples, at 14% and 12%, respectively. Six of 50 (12%) carcasses were contaminated with L. monocytogenes. In the slaughterhouse environment, L. monocytogenes was detected in

BACKGROUND: Following the recent observation of bacterial deposits on dry surfaces referred to as dry-surface biofilms (DSBs), a number of studies were conducted in vitro on bacterial culturability, sensitivity to cleaning and disinfection protocols, and bacterial transfer via gloves or wipes to culture media or inert surfaces. Our study aimed to reproduce in vitro the cross-transmission of bacteria from dry surfaces to invasive medical devices via healthcare professional's gloves.
METHODS: Monobacterial DSBs were produced using an automated model with five different bacterial isolates involv

The contamination of the endoscope tip lens results in poor endoscopic imaging. To prevent the adsorption of contaminants, we applied a soft contact lens made of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate hydrogel to the tip of a gastrointestinal endoscope. Additionally, a novel endoscopic hood with an upper surface composed of a single layer inside the hood cavity was developed. For in vitro anti-fouling performance testing using blood, changes in light transmittance were examined with hydrogel plates and compared to conventional quartz glass and surfactant-coated glass. The transmittance changes at a wavel

Duodenoscope use in healthcare facilities has been associated with transmission of multidrug resistant pathogens between patients. To assist healthcare facilities in monitoring the quality of their duodenoscope reprocessing procedures and limit patient risk of infection, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) deployed voluntary interim duodenoscope sampling and culturing surveillance protocols in 2015. Though the interim methods were widely adopted, alternative surveillance protocols were developed and implemented at individual institutions. Here, we compared two sampling methods

AIMS: The unknown prevalence of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in the UK population has led to fears of horizontal transmission through routine medical procedures. The potential risk of transmission via contact tonometry was examined.
METHODS: The total amount of protein carried over by tonometer tips after applanation of patients was assessed.
RESULTS: Tonometer tips had an inherent ability to carry proteinaceous material. There was a large variability in the load carried over between individual patients. Rinsing tonometer tips in water reduced protein carryover. Wiping the tonome

The route of transmission of hepatitis C virus is still controversial. Parenteral exposure via blood or blood products leads to infection in the majority of cases, and the majority of intravenous drug users become infected by repetitive exposure to contaminated injection equipment. The risk of infection from a single needlestick injury is 5-15% and may depend on the size of the innoculum. Other parenteral routes of transmission may include traditional healing practices and the use of contaminated medical equipment. Transmission is less common within a family but the prevalence of hepatitis C v

The present work assesses human exposure to pesticides in vegetable-producing areas in Burkina Faso, using hair as an indicator. The study design includes a comparison between operators who are occupationally exposed while working in the fields and a reference population (i.e. not occupationally exposed) to evaluate both occupational and indirect exposures. Hair samples from volunteers (n=101) were positive for 17 pesticides (38 analyzed). Acetamiprid, desethylatrazine, carbofuran, and deltamethrin were detected for the first time in field samples. With a maximum of 9 residues per sample, pest

The danger to healthcare personnel of acquiring a blood-borne infection accidentally transmitted by a patient is well known. Such an infection can have serious and career-altering implications. Epistaxis, which is the most common emergency seen in ENT practice, poses a great risk of contaminated blood being spattered on the face of the attending medical provider. Areas of possible contamination include the mucosa of the nasal passages, oral cavity, and conjunctiva. Various strategies to prevent contamination have been described in the literature, most of which involve the wearing of protective

Bacteriophage contamination has a devastating impact on the viability of bacterial hosts and can significantly reduce the productivity of bioprocesses in biotechnological industries. The consequences range from widespread fermentation failure to substantial economic losses, highlighting the urgent need for effective countermeasures. Conventional prevention methods, which focus primarily on the physical removal of bacteriophages from equipment, bioprocess units, and the environment, have proven ineffective in preventing phage entry and contamination. The coevolutionary dynamics between phages a

Post-mortem specimens used for anatomy teaching are commonly embalmed using compositions of chemicals, with the objective to maintain tissue quality and to avoid putrefaction. Monitoring for bacterial or fungal contamination is becoming increasingly important especially when measures are taken to minimize exposure by chemicals such as formaldehyde. In this case, random swabs were taken from six corpses embalmed with ethanol-glycerin and Thiel embalming. Cultures and MALDI-TOF analyses yielded four cases of Clostridium perfringens contamination. C. perfringens is of special interest as a human

UNLABELLED: Sterile technique is essential to protect patients and decrease the risk of surgical site infections. Despite efforts to maintain sterility, sterile breaches occur. Examples of such breaches include holes in surgical drapes, insects in the operating room, residual bioburden on surgical instruments, dropped grafts intraoperatively, and defective sterile tray wrappers. Intraoperative sterile breaches are stressful situations for the surgical team and require the surgeon to make quick decisions that have a large impact on the patient's infection risk and outcome. There is limited lite

Non-compliant final rinse water (microbial culture results exceeding 10 cfu/100 mL) is an under-recognized risk factor for failure of flexible gastrointestinal (GI) endoscope reprocessing, since it is an important step following disinfection during the reprocessing of flexible endoscopes. Opportunistic premise plumbing pathogens (OPPPs) may colonize terminal segments of the water distribution system and compromise rinse water quality. This study investigated the cause of recurrent final rinse water non-compliance in a GI endoscopy unit and evaluated an engineering intervention to prevent it. D
