Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a facultative anaerobic Gram-positive rod that occurs widely in nature and is best known in veterinary medicine for causing swine erysipelas. In humans, infections are rare and mainly considered as occupationally acquired zoonosis. A case of E. rhusiopathiae bacteremia most likely associated with home freshwater aquarium handling is reported. The route of transmission was probably a cut with the dorsal fin of a dead pet fish. A short review of clinical presentations, therapeutic considerations and pitfalls of E. rhusiopathiae infections in humans is presented.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the effects of surface protective antigen A (SpaA) and its N-teminal protective domain (rSpaA-N) against Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae infection in mice.
METHODS: The SpaA was purified by electroelution from NaOH-extracted antigen of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae strain C43311. The rSpaA-N was expressed in E. coli BL21 as a soluble protein by IPTG inducing, and purified with GST affinity chromatography. Mice of each group were subcutaneously immunized three times with 50 microg or 100 microg of native SpaA, rSpaA-N or NaOH-extracted antigen with in complete or incomplete

Forty-three strains of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, isolated from pigs with chronic swine erysipelas, were examined for the presence of plasmid DNA by agarose gel electrophoresis and electron microscopy. Seven of these strains were found to contain plasmids of which number were varied from 1 to 6. The plasmids ranged from 1.4 to 86 kb in size. This is the first reported evidence for plasmid DNA in E. rhusiopathiae. The functions of the plasmids are unknown at present.

The stable L-form of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a typical protoplast type L-form. Cells are surrounded by a trilamellar cytoplasmic membrane only. They grow in form of aggregations in liquid media and their diameters vary between 0.1 and 2 micrometer. Always a large portion of cells undergoes lysis. It seems to be characteristic for L-form cultures of E. rhusiopathiae that always many artifact structures are formed. The artifacts are spherical particles with diameters of 0.1 micrometer to more than 3 micrometer. They can be differentiated from L-form cells only by electron microscopy. The

BACKGROUND: Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is an established animal pathogen, which may cause infections in humans. It is a gram-positive rod and found in the tonsils or the digestive tracts of animals. The bacterium is occupationally related, as usually only people with frequent animal contacts are infected. We report a case of a patient who was admitted with an infectious tenosynovitis with bloodstream infection due to E. rhusiopathiae, and to our knowledge, this is the first report of a tenosynovitis with systemic manifestation associated with this bacterium.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year old

Prosthetic knee joint infection caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is uncommon and only one case of recurrent infection has previously been described. Here, we describe the case of a 77-year-old male patient who was admitted to the teaching hospital of Rennes (France) with bilateral and nocturnal gonalgia evolving for 1 month. He had bilateral knee prosthesis 10 years ago, and a history of large B-cell lymphoma in remission. A diagnosis of infective endocarditis, with prosthetic knee infection, was made, with positive cultures of synovial fluids and blood; colonies of E. rhusiopathiae were

Recently, a series of acute swine erysipelas outbreaks occurred in Eastern China. Eight strains isolated from cases of septicemia were determined as serotype 1a, and 4 of the isolates were resistant to acriflavine. One isolate strain named HX130709 was attenuated on agar media containing acriflavine dye. The 432-bp hypervariable region in spaA gene of the field and attenuated strains were amplified and sequenced. It was further compared with the vaccine strain G4T10, and thus, the eight field strains can be divided into four spaA-types. The partial spaA gene analysis also showed that no point

A case of septic arthritis caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, after an arthroscopically assisted anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) substitution in a non-immunosuppressed patient is described. An 18-year-old man underwent an ACL reconstruction with a quadruple hamstring graft. Eight days postoperatively, the patient developed fever, knee pain, and effusion without erythema or suppuration. He was readmitted to the hospital with the diagnosis of septic arthritis. The patient's erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein level, and white blood cell count were high. The joint was aspirat

Chronic polyarthritis was induced in pigs by injection of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae and the in vivo activation of chondrocytes by cytokines was then investigated in the affected joints by immunocytochemistry. A polyclonal antiserum which recognises surface markers on in vitro interleukin 1 activated porcine chondrocytes was used to detect activated chondrocytes in all zones of the cartilage from diseased joints. In contrast, cartilage removed from an unaffected joint in the same animal showed no chondrocyte activation. Inflammatory synovial tissue removed from diseased joints and cocultured

The genus Erysipelothrix comprises facultative anaerobic, nonspore-forming, gram-positive bacteria that can cause skin infections and severe diseases such as septicemia and endocarditis in humans. Although E. rhusiopathiae is the primary pathogen, other species may also be involved, necessitating accurate identification. However, 16S rDNA sequencing lacks sufficient resolution to differentiate among Erysipelothrix species. In this study, we used Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) to directly sequence low-quality DNA extracted from heart valve tissue of a 66-year-old female patient with a fatal c

UNLABELLED: The discovery of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2-like and Middle East respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-like viruses in Malayan pangolins has raised concerns about their potential role in the spread of zoonotic diseases. Herein, we describe the isolation and whole-genome sequencing of potentially zoonotic two bacterial pathogens from diseased Malaysian pangolins (Manis javanica)-Corynebacterium ulcerans and Erysipelothrix sp. The newly identified species were designated as C. ulcerans P69 and Erysipelothrix sp. P66. C. ulcerans P69 exhibited 99.2% whole-genome nucleo

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a relevant zoonotic infectious agent causing swine erysipelas (SE) in wild boar. In Portugal, there is no information on its occurrence. For this reason, this study aims to perform a first serosurvey of SE in hunted wild boars in Portugal. During the 2019/2020 hunting season, 111 sera from hunted wild boar were collected and analysed serologically in the laboratory with a commercial ELISA kit. No animals were eviscerated and examined after the hunt. The hunters took it all for private consumption. The results identified 18 animals that were exposed to SE, corres

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Swine erysipelas is a disease caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, a Gram-positive bacillus, which has great economic importance because it leads to the loss of the swine herd. To control this disease, animals are immunized with a cellular vaccine of killed or attenuated E. rhusiopathiae, but even with herd vaccination, cases of swine erysipelas outbreaks have been reported in the United States, China and Japan, leading to the search for other antigenic components of the bacteria that may promote greater protection against E. rhusiopathiae. The surface protein SpaA from E.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, the causative agent of the disease erysipelas, is a gram-positive bacillus, and an opportunistic pathogen in diverse species of animals. In New Zealand, E. rhusiopathiae has killed endangered birds on offshore islands, including Kākāpō (Strigops habroptilus), Takahē (Porphyrio hochstetteri), and Kiwi (Apteryx spp.). The source of infection is uncertain, and the prevalence of E. rhusiopathiae among wild birds is currently unknown. During October 2018 to December 2018, we surveyed dead and live seabirds that visit two of New Zealand's offshore islands used for Kākāp

UNLABELLED: Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a causative agent of swine erysipelas. We developed a novel and highly specific loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for sensitive and rapid detection of E. rhusiopathiae. The LAMP assay correctly detected 39 E. rhusiopathiae strains. No LAMP products were detected from 14 non-rhusiopathiae Erysipelothrix and 16 non-Erysipelothrix strains, including E. tonsillarum serovar 10 strains, which are difficult to be discriminated from E. rhusiopathiae strains. These results were consistent with those obtained by a conventional E. rhusiopathia

The capsule has been implicated in the virulence of the swine pathogen Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, a rod-shaped, intracellular Gram-positive bacterium that has a unique phylogenetic position in the phylum Firmicutes and is a close relative of Mollicutes (mycoplasma species). In this study, we analyzed the genetic locus and composition of the capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of the Fujisawa strain of E. rhusiopathiae. Genome analysis of the Fujisawa strain revealed that the genetic locus for capsular polysaccharide synthesis (cps) is located next to an lic operon, which is involved in the incorp

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae septicemia, associated with an increased mortality of captive psittacines in a mixed-species aviary, was diagnosed by histopathology, Gram staining, bacterial culture and sequencing, immunohistochemistry, and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Over a period of 23 days with no premonitory signs, 2 rainbow lorikeets and an eclectus parrot died. Of these birds, one lorikeet and the eclectus were submitted for necropsy. The main pathologic findings were thrombosis (2/2), bacterial embolism/thromboembolism (2/2), necrotizing hepatitis (2/2), necrohemorrhagic myo

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae was isolated from tonsils of 245 (35.7%) of 687 apparently healthy slaughter pigs in Indonesia during the period of June 1987 to February 1988. A total of 150 of the 245 E. rhusiopathiae isolated could be serotyped within the 22 recognized serotypes. Serotype 2 was most prevalent with 23.7%, followed by Serotypes 11, 12, 1a, 5 and 6 representing 7.3, 5.3, 4.9, 4.9 and 4.1% of the isolates, respectively. The nine other serotypes (Serotypes 1b, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 13, 19 and 22) combined to make up 11.0% of the isolates. Antibiotic-resistant strains were not found. Of 86
