Exploring the process of social support among parents of children with cancer in the sociocultural context of Iran: a grounded theory study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of cancer is increasing across all age groups including children. This disease and its costly treatment affect not only the patient but their entire family-especially parents as primary caregivers-leading to psychological distress, physical exhaustion and financial strain. Social support serves as a vital protective factor for parents facing their child's cancer diagnosis. As a complex, context-dependent phenomenon emerging from social interactions, its process requires exploration within diverse cultural settings. Thus, this study aims to explain the process of soc

CUPID: a protocol of a randomised controlled trial to identify characteristics of similar Chinese patent medicines.

INTRODUCTION: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has accumulated some experience in curing stable angina pectoris (SAP) and efficacy has been demonstrated. Chinese patent medicines, known as modern dosage forms of TCM, can attain the desired effect in clinical application only with the guidance of TCM syndrome theory. However, due to their use by a large number of persons with little knowledge of TCM theories and practices, their efficacy and reputation have been seriously affected. METHOD AND ANALYSIS: Two common syndrome types of SAP in TCM, 'qi deficiency and blood stasis' and 'qi stagnati

Navigating the storm: Ethical consideration to climate justice and sustainable health equity in Africa.

Africa bears a disproportionate burden of climate change, despite contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions. This article explores the ethical imperatives of addressing climate-induced health disparities in Africa, particularly through the lens of climate justice and the African philosophy of ubuntu. In Sub-Saharan Africa, approximately 700 million people live on less than $2.15 per day, falling below the extreme poverty line. Low-income communities disproportionately suffer from the negative impacts of climate change. These populations face a multifaceted crisis that requires

Latent profiles of college students' AI literacy and their association with AI acceptance: the sequential indirect role of perceived affordances and growth mindset.

OBJECTIVE: Against the backdrop of the rapid proliferation of generative artificial intelligence (AI), fostering active acceptance and effective utilization of such technologies among college students has emerged as a critical concern in higher education. This study aims to investigate the relationship between AI literacy (AIL) and college students' AI acceptance (AIA), as well as its underlying mechanisms, while employing latent profile analysis (LPA) to identify heterogeneous types of AIL and examine path differences across distinct latent classes. METHODS: A sample of 975 Chinese college s

Narrating care and medical authority in Egyptian fiction: a medical humanities approach.

This article analyses how Egyptian novels construct experiences of medicine, care and institutional authority through comparative close readings of Naguib Mahfouz's The Day the Leader Was Killed, Youssef Ziedan's Azazeel, Ahmed Mourad's The Blue Elephant and Nawal El Saadawi's Woman at Point Zero Situated in medical humanities, it treats literature as narrative knowledge production, articulating ethical and experiential dimensions of medicine beyond empirical documentation. Drawing on narrative and institutional theory, the article develops a four-part analytical vocabulary-bureaucratic waitin

"Syndemic moral distress": sexual health provider practices in the context of co-occurring, socially produced sexual and mental health epidemics.

BACKGROUND: 'Syndemic' refers to socially produced, intertwined, and co-occurring epidemics. Syndemic theory is increasingly used to understand the population-level relationships between sexual health (including HIV) and mental health (including problematic substance use) epidemics. Syndemic-informed clinical interventions are rare. METHODS: We therefore asked 22 sexual health practitioners from six sexual health clinics in British Columbia, Canada to define the word 'syndemic' and then asked how the theory related to their clinical practice. RESULTS: Responses to syndemic theory ranged wide

Understanding pharmacists' values: a qualitative study of ideals and dilemmas in UK pharmacy practice.

Pharmacy, like other health care professions, is both a knowledge-based and a value-based profession. However, the values that inform practice activities are rarely made explicit. We sought to identify the values drawn on by UK pharmacists through qualitative interviews on day-to-day practice activities focused around practitioners' conceptions of 'the good pharmacist', good practice and their experiences of ethical issues and dilemmas. The study was based upon loosely structured, one-to-one interviews of 38 selected practitioners reflecting a range of practice roles and settings. The intervie

Commentary on "Consciousness as a Memory System" by Budson, Richman, and Kensinger (2022).

Consciouness is a phenomenon that has eluded explanation by generations of physicians and scientists. Many discussions, experiments, and theories about consciousness have been published, but none has adequately explained the phenomenon. In the previous issue, Budson and colleagues (2022) present a theory of consciousness based on explicit memory processes, with consciousness developing in the context of memory function. In the authors' view, consciousness accompanying other cortical processes such as language or visual-spatial function developed only later in evolution. The evidence presented

Ethical dilemmas experienced by midwives in their professional practice in Northwestern Ethiopia: a phenomenological interview study.

BACKGROUND: Ethical dilemmas in healthcare arise from conflicts among ethical beliefs, duties, principles, and theories. Midwives face ethical dilemmas in their clinical practice, where their decisions significantly affect the well-being of mothers and infants. However, there is a scarcity of data about midwives' experience of ethical dilemmas in Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to explore the ethical dilemmas faced by midwives in their professional practice in northwestern Ethiopia, 2024. METHODS: A qualitative study with a phenomenological approach was conducted from December 2023 to Jan

Relational-temporal dignity at the end of life: Ethical foundations for the DiRePal model in the algorithmic age.

OBJECTIVES: The increasing presence of artificial intelligence (AI), electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROMs), and digital infrastructures in palliative care is transforming how clinical encounters are organized and how suffering is interpreted. These technological shifts heighten the risk of relational compression and a reduction of dignity to measurable outputs. This paper proposes the DiRePal model (Relational-Temporal Dignity in Palliative Care) as a philosophical framework to re-examine dignity beyond coherent narrative identity or autonomy-centered ethics, emphasizing relational pre

Informal carer involvement in the transition of medicines-related care for patients moving from hospital to home: a realist review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Transition of care for a patient between hospital and home can cause disruption to normal routines, increasing the risk of medicines-related harm. The transition from hospital to home is more complex when a patient does not self-manage their medicines but relies on an informal or unpaid carer (eg, spouse, family member or friend) to provide support. Given the day-to-day medicines-related support provided by informal carers, there is a need to understand how informal carers manage the transition of care from hospital to home; what aspects of hospital discharge act as barriers and

Ill Fates and Heroic Feats: A Thematic Analysis of Elite Athleticism and Chronic Illness.

Far more than an individual endeavor, work is a collective enterprise, an ethic, in which individuals participate to fulfill needs of their surrounding social world. Specifically, sport professionals undergo strenuous physical labor to compete and garner public admiration. Yet, when chronic illness interferes with their performances, how are athletes expected to respond? Through a thematic analysis of newspaper discourses covering professional golfer Tim Simpson's mysterious illness over time, this study explores an athlete's persistence to compete despite his deteriorating health. Caring for People with Disabilities: An Ethics of Respect.

Eva Feder Kittay's Learning from My Daughter: The Value and Care of Disabled Minds is poised to make a major contribution to the disability literature and is likely to spark controversy among disability scholars. The book's central contribution is the articulation of an ethics of care for meeting the "genuine needs" and "legitimate wants" of people with disabilities or chronic illnesses. We applaud Kittay, who is the mother of a woman with cerebral palsy who has multiple physical and intellectual impairments, for sharing her story in such an eloquent, accessible, and personal manner. The quest

Qualitative Research in Correctional Settings: Researcher Bias, Western Ideological Influences, and Social Justice.

Within correctional settings, justice, health, and academic systems overlap for forensic nurse researchers. Within an environment that stresses social control, a researcher's implicit views, perspectives, and biases can lead to altering the authentic (re)presentation of a participant's experience. Researcher bias may be influenced by predominately western ideologies and societal discourses. Qualitative methods to mitigate and raise awareness around researcher biases include bracketing, unstructured interviews, diverse peer review, thinking inductively, investigator responsiveness, and critical

Ethical issues in treating gay and lesbian patients.

Since the 1973 decision to remove homosexuality from the list of mental disorders, most mental health practitioners have shifted their clinical focus from "the cure" of homosexuality to treating the concerns of gay and lesbian patients. Some clinicians, however, reject the mental health mainstream's view and continue to conceptualize homosexuality as a mental disorder. Their clinical theories have been incorporated into wider societal debates regarding the status of gay and lesbian people. The sexual conversion or reparative therapies they practice, however, may include routine ethical violati

The German translation of the Oxford utilitarianism scale: Validation and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the observations.

The study of utilitarian inclinations is probably the most experimentally investigated aspect of morality. The Oxford Utilitarianism Scale has been developed to provide a self-report tool for reliable measurement of utilitarian views while addressing serious methodological issues with previous measures. In this study, we have translated and validated a German version of the Oxford Utilitarianism Scale (OUS-DE). The scale consists of two subscales: Impartial Beneficence (IB-DE) and Instrumental Harm (IH-DE). We conducted a procedure in a general German sample (NS1 = 378, 243 women, Mage = 25.37

When the customer is unethical: the explanatory role of employee emotional exhaustion onto work-family conflict, relationship conflict with coworkers, and job neglect.

We integrate deontological ethics (Folger, 1998, 2001; Kant, 1785/1948, 1797/1991) with conservation of resources theory (Hobfoll, 1989) to propose that an employee's repeated exposure to violations of moral principle can diminish the availability of resources to appropriately attend to other personal and work domains. In particular, we identify customer unethical behavior as a morally charged work demand that leads to a depletion of resources as captured by employee emotional exhaustion. In turn, emotionally exhausted employees experience higher levels of work-family conflict, relationship co

Horizontal hostility: why you should care.

Nurse-to-nurse, or horizontal, hostility creates a multitude of problems. There are a number of specific and direct problems, including impact on the culture of nursing, stress, healthcare economics, and patient outcomes, that are illustrated in the literature. Horizontal hostility is a pervasive and destructive force that must be addressed in every venue in which nursing is involved. This study discusses the problem of horizontal hostility and the impact it has on nursing and healthcare. Nursing theory is applied to practice and provides concepts and frameworks that are utilized to underscore

Assessing ethical competence and ethical climate: development and psychometric testing of the Clinical Ethics Support Measurement Instrument (CES-MI).

BACKGROUND: Clinical ethics support (CES) is increasingly recognised as essential in healthcare, yet its evaluation remains challenging due to the complexity of CES practices and the latent, psychosocial nature of relevant outcomes. The European Moral Case Deliberation Outcomes Instruments (Euro-MCD original and 2.0) represents important steps in operationalising CES outcomes. However, there remains a need for a further theoretically grounded and psychometrically robust instrument. This study aimed to revise the Euro-MCD 2.0 and to develop and psychometrically test a new measurement instrument
