Study of frontal and ethmoid sinus of sinonasal complex along with olfactory fossa: anatomical considerations for endoscopic sinus surgery.

The Functional endoscopic sinus surgery through transnasal approach is a common modality of treatment for disorders of the nasal cavity, paranasal air sinuses as well as cranial cavity. The olfactory fossa (OF) is located along the superior aspect of cribriform plate which varies in shape and depth. This variable measurement of the depth of OF is mostly responsible for greater risk of intracranial infiltration during endoscopic procedures in and around the nasal cavity. The morphology of frontal and ethmoid sinus (ES) vary from simple to complex. This cadaveric study is planned to improve the

A Rare Case of Ewing Sarcoma of the Left Ethmoid Sinus With Orbital Extension.

BACKGROUND: Ewing sarcoma (ES) of the ethmoid sinus with orbital involvement in an adult is very rare, with 16 reported cases in the literature. Immunohistochemical studies show small blue round cells positive for CD99 and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) testing reveals positivity for the EWSR1 gene. METHODS: A 38-year-old male with a diagnosis of ES of the ethmoid sinus presented with left-sided periorbital pain and edema, rhinorrhea, and proptosis. The patient underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy, surgical resection of the left skull base, and postoperative proton radiotherapy. RES

A case report of surgical resection of secretory carcinoma in the maxillary and ethmoid sinus.

INTRODUCTION: Secretory Carcinoma is a recently discovered head and neck tumour. Surgical resection is generally the first line of treatment with neck dissection, radiation, and chemotherapy decided based on clinical, radiological, and histological parameters. We present a case of a Secretory Carcinoma presenting in the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses. CASE: A 39-year-old male presented with left nasal obstruction and chronic rhinosinusitis beginning after surgical repair of the mandible and maxilla due to facial trauma. A CT scan of the head showed soft tissue density in the left maxillary sin

Fibrous Histiocytoma of Anterior Ethmoidal Sinus: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Benign fibrous histiocytoma of the para nasal sinus is a rare tumor of this region which originates from mesenchymal cells. A 9-year-old girl presented with gradually enlarging mass above the medial canthus over 3 months. Orbital computerized tomography scan showed a round well-differentiated homogeneous mass in the anterior ethmoidal sinus. Histology and immunohistochemistry analysis after excision revealed proliferation of spindle-shaped fibroblasts in storiform pattern and histiocytes without mitosis and anaplasia. After 9 months from surgical excision, recurrence occurred which resulted in

[A case of advanced adenocarcinoma of the ethmoid sinus treated by chemoradiation with S-1].

We report a case of advanced adenocarcinoma in the left ethmoid sinus invading the frontal sinus, the frontal skull base and the orbits(T4bN0M0 and Stage IVB). With the goal of functional preservation, we carried out radiation therapy with total 60 Gy irradiation and chemotherapy with S-1 80 mg/body/day before a radical operation. The tumor clinically disappeared without surgical treatment, and there was no sign of recurrence for 2.5 years. When we decide the treatment policy for advanced adenocarcinoma of the ethmoid sinus, chemoradiotherapy wit S-1 might be one of the effective treatments be

[Leptomeningeal dissemination after ethmoidal sinus adenocarcinoma surgery: a rare complication].

INTRODUCTION: Although rare, adenocarcinoma is the most frequent neoplasm of the ethmoid sinus and must be regarded as an occupational disease secondary to chronic wood dust exposure. Few cases with neurological metastasis have been reported. CASE REPORT: We report the cases of two patients who developed a multiple cranial nerve disorder for the first case and a cauda equina syndrome for the second, after ethmoid adenocarcinoma surgery. CONCLUSION: Diagnosis of carcinomatous meningitis is difficult and is based on clinical data, CSF analysis and gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted brain and spin

Implication of differences in the incidence of orbital emphysema in ethmoidal and maxillary sinus fractures.

This study investigated the incidence of orbital emphysema in patients with fractures of the ethmoidal cells or maxillary sinus. We noted that mucosal destruction is essential for orbital emphysema to occur. Computed tomographic examination and intraoperative studies of 58 patients with orbital bone fracture were performed with the patients divided into 2 groups according to the location of the fracture lines. The incidences of orbital emphysema and of intrasinus hematoma were significantly higher in the group with medial orbital bone fracture of ethmoidal cells than in the group with maxillar

[Case report: Cemento-ossifying fibroma of the ethmoidal sinus presenting with exophthalmos].

Cemento-ossifying fibroma is a benign fibro-osseous tumor which contains fibrous tissue and varying amounts of calcified tissue resembling bone, cementum or both. The tumor is frequently seen in the mandibula and maxilla, but it may rarely affect the ethmoidal sinus. In this report, CT findings of cemento-ossifying fibroma located in the ethmoidal sinus are presented.

Surgical and prognostic relevance of supraorbital ethmoid cell involvement in frontal sinus inverted papilloma.

BACKGROUND: The supraorbital ethmoid cell (SOEC) is a pneumatized extension of the anterior ethmoid sinus that may harbor residual disease after surgery, making complete surgical clearance challenging. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the surgical and prognostic relevance of SOEC involvement in frontal sinus (FS) inverted papilloma (IP), particularly its association with revision surgery and recurrence. METHODS: Data from 147 IP patients, including 32 with FS involvement, were retrospectively reviewed to identify true FS origin, FS extension, and SOEC involvement based on operative records and CT sca

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome: report of an aggressive case with ethmoid sinus invasion.

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome, also referred to as Gorlin-Goltz syndrome, is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by multiple basal cell carcinomas, jaw cysts, palmar or plantar pits, ectopic calcification of the falx cerebri, and various skeletal developmental abnormalities. A minority of basal cell carcinomas demonstrate aggressive behavior and involve the craniofacial bones in nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. A non-familial case of nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome with a basal cell carcinoma of the eyelid invading to the ethmoid sinus is reported.

Ethmoid sinus osteoma presenting as epiphora and orbital cellulitis: case report and literature review.

Paranasal sinus osteoma is a slow-growing, benign, encapsulated bony tumor that may be commonly asymptomatic, being detected incidentally in 1% of plain sinus radiographs or in 3% of sinus computerized tomographic scans. In a patient presenting with orbital cellulitis and epiphora, computed tomography disclosed a large osteoma of the ethmoid sinus. Excision of the osteoma allowed recovery of vision, return of extraocular muscle function, and resolution of choroidal folds. Proptosis, diplopia, and visual loss are other frequent presenting signs of paranasal osteomas. Epidemiology, diagnosis, tr

Radiographic identification and description of the equine middle conchal sinus (ethmoidal sinus): Implications for diagnosing middle conchal sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: The middle conchal sinus (MCS) (ethmoidal sinus) remains one of the least understood equine paranasal compartments. Despite recognition of its involvement in sinonasal disease, disorders of the MCS often remain underdiagnosed in the absence of computed tomographic (CT) imaging due to limited anatomical understanding and challenges with radiographic visualisation. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the study were (1) to characterise the radiographic features and anatomical location of the MCS in horses and (2) to illustrate the practical relevance of the anatomical and radiographic find
