Effect of dexmedetomidine on etomidate-induced myoclonus: a randomized, double-blind controlled trial.

Background: Etomidate used for the induction of general anesthesia can result in myoclonus. We tested the hypothesis that pretreatment with dexmedetomidine (Dex) reduces the incidence of etomidate-induced myoclonus during the induction of general anesthesia. Materials and methods: One hundred patients who were scheduled for selective operations under general anesthesia were included in this randomized, double-blind controlled trial. Patients were randomized to receive either Dex 0.5 µg/kg in 20 mL of normal saline or the same volume of normal saline as pretreatment agents 15 mins before the in

Etomidate for rapid-sequence intubation in young children: hemodynamic effects and adverse events.

OBJECTIVES: Physicians commonly use etomidate for adult rapid-sequence intubation (RSI), but the manufacturer does not recommend its use for children under 10 years of age due to a lack of data. The authors present their experience with etomidate for pediatric RSI in order to further develop its risk-benefit profile in this age group. METHODS: Trained abstractors reviewed the medical records for all children under 10 years old who received etomidate for RSI between July 1996 and April 2001. RESULTS: 105 children, with an average age of 3 (+/-2.9) years, received a median dose of 0.32 (+/-0.1

Rapid and sensitive detection of etomidate based on functionalized copper nanoclusters fluorescent probe.

Etomidate as a non-barbiturate sedative, has central inhibitory effect and addiction and has been listed as a controlled drug in some countries due to the abusing trend nowadays. Therefore, rapid and sensitive detection of etomidate is of great significance. In this work, a novel fluorescent sensing probe (CuNCs@MIPs) based on copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) and molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) has been firstly reported. CuNCs was environment-friendly synthesized using poly(vinylpyrrolidone) as a template and ascorbic acid as a reducing agent. After functionalized with molecular imprinting tech

Case report: Side effects of etomidate in propylene glycol in five Göttingen Minipigs.

Etomidate, an agonist of the GABA A receptors, is available for clinical use either in combination with 35% propylene glycol or in a lipid emulsion. Its recognized ability to minimally impact the cardiovascular system made etomidate a suitable option for cardiac-compromised patients. Myoclonus and pain at the injection site are recognized side effects of etomidate in propylene glycol, affecting both human and veterinary species. There is no information available concerning potential side effect in minipigs. In the present case series, we report the side effects related to the use of etomidate
