Auditory P300 as a Neurophysiological Correlate of Symptomatic Improvement by Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in Patients With Schizophrenia: A Pilot Study.

Background. The reduced amplitude, prolonged latency, and increased intertrial variability of auditory P300 have been consistently reported in relation to the symptomatic severity of schizophrenia. This study investigated whether auditory P300 event-related potentials can be used as an objective indicator of symptomatic improvement by transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in patients with schizophrenia. Methods. Ten patients with schizophrenia received 20 minutes of 2-mA tDCS twice a day for 5 consecutive weekdays. The anode was placed over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and

P300 Latency with Memory Performance: A Promising Biomarker for Preclinical Stages of Alzheimer's Disease.

Detecting and tracking the preclinical stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is now of particular interest due to the aging of the world's population. AD is the most common cause of dementia, affecting the daily lives of those afflicted. Approaches in development can accelerate the evaluation of the preclinical stages of AD and facilitate early treatment and the prevention of symptom progression. Shifts in P300 amplitude and latency, together with neuropsychological assessments, could serve as biomarkers in the early screening of declines in cognitive abilities. In this study, we investigated the

Behavioral and neural responses to social exclusion in women: the role of facial attractiveness and friendliness.

The behavioral and neural responses to social exclusion were examined in women randomized to four conditions, varying in levels of attractiveness and friendliness. Informed by evolutionary theory, we predicted that being socially excluded by attractive unfriendly women would be more distressing than being excluded by unattractive women, irrespective of their friendliness level. Our results contradicted most of our predictions but provide important insights into women's responses to interpersonal conflict. Accounting for rejection sensitivity, P300 event-related potential amplitudes were larges

Effect of the HERVAT neuroeducational program on evoked potential P300 in children with attention deficit disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Attention deficit disorder (ADD) has been investigated from various perspectives. However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying this condition remain unknown. Evoked potentials, including P300, can be used to investigate the processes underlying deficient attentional and cognitive functions in children with ADD. METHODS: In this study, we analyze the effect of a neuroeducational program, HERVAT (Hidratación [hydration], Equilibrio [balance], Respiración [breathing], Visión [vision], Audición [hearing], Tacto [touch]), on evoked potential P300 in a group of children aged 7-1

Neural correlates of near-misses effect in gambling.

The present study investigated the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying the gambling near-miss effect by measuring event-related-potentials. Using a simple gambling task, we measured behavioral response and electrophysiological activity of gambling outcomes. Self-rating results showed that when compared to full-miss outcome, near-miss outcome were rated as less pleasant, but yielded higher motivation to play. Whereas the feedback-related negativity (FRN) amplitude did not reflect the motivation rating differences between near-miss and full-miss, the P300 amplitude mirrored the motivation

ERPs and eye movements reflect atypical visual perception in pervasive developmental disorder.

Many studies of eye tracking or event-related brain potentials (ERPs) in subjects with Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) have yielded inconsistent results on attentional processing. However, recent studies have indicated that there are specific abnormalities in early processing that are probably related to perception. ERP amplitudes in response to visual stimuli, measured above the occipital (modality-specific) cortex, are reported to be abnormally small in patients with PDD, and the abnormal visual processing is possibly associated with the spatial visual frequency content of stimuli. It

Interpersonal relationship modulates brain responses to outcome evaluation when gambling for/against others: an electrophysiological analysis.

When individuals play a gambling task and their actions have consequences for observers, how are the brain responses of the performers modulated by their interpersonal relationship with the observers? To address this issue, we examined the event-related potentials responses in performers while they played two gambling games: one during which they tried to earn money for the observers instead of themselves (i.e., Experiment 1) and another gambling game during which they attempted to earn money from the observers (i.e., Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, ERP results showed that when gambling for ei

Habituation of auditory event-related potentials in patients with Behcet's disease.

Behcet's disease is a progressive and/or relapsing-remitting multisystem inflammatory disorder. Involvement of the central nervous system occurs in 10%-29% of cases with Behcet's disease. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of repetitive auditory stimulations on event-related potentials (ERP) in patients with Behcet's without neurologic manifestations. The study was performed in 14 patients with Behcet's disease and 14 healthy volunteers. ERPs were recorded from Fz, Cz and Pz. The auditory ERPs test was continued until 20 artefact-free rare tones were averaged, which was acce

Solvent-induced toxic encephalopathy: electrophysiological data in relation to neuropsychological findings.

Male subjects with type 2A (n = 12) and 2B (n = 12) solvent-induced toxic encephalopathy and a reference group of healthy men (n = 12) without previous solvent exposure were studied using quantitative EEG and event-related potentials from an odd-ball and a dual-task paradigm. Subjects with toxic encephalopathy of types 2A and 2B showed markedly lower P300 amplitudes than did controls in both paradigms. In the relatively complex dual-task setting, subjects with 2A and 2B showed lower signal detection than did controls.

[An electrophysiological study of the rehabilitation of cognitive functions during the treatment of patients with panic disorders].

To investigate psychophysiological features of panic disorder (PD) before and after treatment with citalopram, P300 auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded in 31 patients who met the DSM-IV criteria of PD and 24 age- and sex-matched normal controls. The ERPs were recorded during a standard two-tone discrimination task (oddball task). The treatment was conducted as a monotherapy during 6 weeks, with citalopram dosage of 20 mg/day. Compared to controls, patients differed significantly by the reduced P300 amplitude and the alteration of its habituation. These patients also demonstr

Maturational trajectories of neurophysiological indices of inhibitory control in typically developing children.

The development of cognitive control during childhood is characterized by progressive improvements in attentional processing and response inhibition. The present study examined neural activity associated with visual attention and inhibitory control in typically developing children aged 6-12 years, using quantitative high-density electroencephalography (HD-EEG). A total of 172 typically developing children aged 6-12 years participated in the study. Participants completed a computerized Go/NoGo task while EEG activity was recorded. Behavioral performance, event-related potentials (ERPs), and tim

Distinct Neural Dynamics Underlying Reward Expectation Formation and Outcome Processing: Insights From ERP and Time-Frequency Analyses.

Reward expectations are fundamental to theories of decision making and reinforcement learning. While prior research has focused on how expectations can influence outcome processing, far fewer studies have investigated how these expectations are actually formed. To address this gap, we measured EEG activity from participants as they completed a two-stage binary-choice task designed to separate the formation of expectations about outcome probabilities from the processing of actual reward outcomes. To more fully examine the neural mechanisms underlying each stage, we measured the Reward Positivit

Comparison of the P300 between maintenance and manipulation conditions in the auditory N-back paradigm among early and late adolescents.

PURPOSE: The P300 recorded using N-back tasks could be used to identify brain regions involved in the maintenance and manipulation demands of working memory. The difference in brain activity between zero-back and one-back conditions highlights areas activated during the maintenance phase of the working memory. Similarly, the difference between one-back and two-back conditions reveals brain regions engaged in the manipulation process of working memory. The difference between zero-back and two-back conditions reflects areas activated during both the maintenance and manipulation processes. This s

Revealing Pathological Auditory Central Inhibition in Tinnitus Using Cortical Auditory Evoked Potentials Responses to Contralateral Acoustic Stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that auditory central inhibition is reduced in tinnitus patients and explore whether improving this inhibitory function could alleviate tinnitus severity. METHODS: We recruited 16 chronic tinnitus patients and 14 age-matched healthy controls, all of whom exhibited clinically normal audiometric thresholds. Electroacoustic measures, cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEP), were used to assess neural activity. Contralateral noise stimulation was employed to evaluate contralateral suppression (CS) of CAEP amplitude. RESULTS: Significant differences in CS of N

Religiosity, Financial Risk Taking, and Reward Processing: An Experimental Study.

The present study investigated the extent to which financial risk-taking (FRT) perspectives and religiosity influenced an individual's performance on financial decision-making tasks under risk and/or uncertainty. It further investigated the potential to measure this interaction using electro-encephalogram (EEG) assessments through reward-related event-related potentials (P3 and FRN). EEG data were collected from 37 participants undergoing four decision-making tasks comprising the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), Iowa Gambling Test (IGT), Mixed-Gamble Loss-Aversion Task (MGLAT), and MGLA-Succ

Is misokinesia sensitivity explained by visual attentional orienting? ERP evidence from an emotional oddball task suggests no.

Misokinesia is a prevalent condition characterized by strong, negative emotional reactions to the sight of repetitive fidgeting movements in others. Here we present the results of a study designed to explore the relationship between misokinesia sensitivity (MKS) and attentional sensitivity to affectively-valenced visual stimuli. In particular, we asked participants with either high or low levels of MKS to perform an emotional oddball task that included responding to faces that had either angry or happy expressions, while we recorded event-related potentials. We found that there were no signifi

New-Onset Alzheimer's Disease and Normal Subjects 100% Separated Statistically by P300 and ICA.

Previously, we described how patients with new-onset Alzheimer's disease were differentiated from healthy, normal subjects to 100% accuracy, based on the amplitudes of the nonrhythmic back-projected independent components of the P300 peak at the electroencephalogram electrodes and their latency in the response to an oddball, auditory evoked potential paradigm. A neural network and a voting strategy were used for classification. Here, we consider instead the statistical distribution functions of their latencies and amplitudes and suggest that the 2-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test based upon thei

Impaired phonological and orthographic word representations among adult dyslexic readers: evidence from event-related potentials.

The authors examined the processing of phonological and orthographic word representations among 17 dyslexic and 16 normal college-level readers using Event-Related Potential measures. They focused on 2 early components--the P200 and the P300. The results revealed P200 and P300 components of lower amplitude and later latency among dyslexic readers than among normal readers for both types of word representation. Group differences were greatest for phonological representations. In addition, the authors observed greater time gaps among dyslexic readers than among normal readers between different p
