Nursing processes used in the treatment of patients with bipolar disorder.

Psychiatric nurses are increasingly being involved in the provision of care for outpatients with bipolar disorder. The establishment of a body of knowledge for the nursing of these patients is vital for the development of integrated evidence-based treatment. The literature for the period January 1980 to January 2006 is reviewed. A sensitive literature search included not only the nursing care based on research results but also nursing care based on experiences acquired by practising nurses. The results show that formal research on the nursing of patients with a bipolar disorder is remarkably l

The heart of the art: emotional intelligence in nurse education.

The concept of emotional intelligence has grown in popularity over the last two decades, generating interest both at a social and a professional level. Concurrent developments in nursing relate to the recognition of the impact of self-awareness and reflexive practice on the quality of the patient experience and the drive toward evidence-based patient centred models of care. The move of nurse training into higher education heralded many changes and indeed challenges for the profession as a whole. Traditionally, nurse education has been viewed as an essentialist education, the main emphasis bein

How to perform a tracheostomy dressing and inner cannula change.

RATIONALE AND KEY POINTS: Proactive tracheostomy management increases patient safety and reduces adverse events. ▶ A cleaning regimen performed every four hours reduces the risk of a blocked tracheostomy cannula, complete tube occlusion and respiratory arrest. ▶ Sterile tracheostomy dressings allow secretions from the stoma to be absorbed and prevent pressure damage from the tracheostomy tube. ▶ Regular dressing changes and skin inspection permit timely identification of inflammatory processes and skin excoriation, enabling prompt treatment to be instigated. REFLECTIVE ACTIVITY: Clinical skill

Spirituality, religiosity, depression, anxiety, and drug-use consequences during methadone maintenance therapy.

Substance addiction is damaging to the health of persons, families, and society. Often the person with addiction has decreased spirituality and religiosity and suffers from anxiety, depression, or both, increasing the risk for continued substance use and its concomitant negative consequences. The study purpose was to describe spirituality and religiosity, among persons enrolled in methadone maintenance therapy and to examine associations between spirituality, religiosity, anxiety, depression, and drug-use consequences. Using a descriptive and cross-sectional correlational design, 108 participa

Ultrasonography-Guided Nasogastric Tube Placement and Verification: A Standardized Nursing Protocol.

This protocol presents a standardized, evidence-based nursing approach for ultrasonography-guided nasogastric tube (NGT) placement and verification in adult patients. The method was developed from a scoping review of 29 studies that examined clinical indications, technical procedures, and decision-making strategies for point-of-care ultrasonography (PoCUS) in NGT confirmation. Across the literature, ultrasonography consistently emerged as a safe, rapid, radiation-free tool for real-time visualization of the tube within the esophagus and stomach. While chest radiography remains the conventional

Skin hygiene for patients with bariatric needs.

Patients with bariatric needs are likely to experience skin problems because maintaining skin hygiene, particularly between skin folds, can be a challenge. This article is a summary of a literature review that explored the evidence on skin hygiene for people with bariatric needs. The findings reveal a gap in the evidence base and the authors make several recommendations for further research.

Critical care nurses' role in implementing the "ABCDE bundle" into practice.

Imagine working in an environment where all patients undergoing mechanical ventilation are alert, calm, and delirium free. Envision practicing in an environment where nonvocal patients can effectively express their need for better pain control, repositioning, or emotional reassurance. Picture an intensive care unit where a nurse-led, interprofessional team practices evidence-based, patient-centered care focused on preserving and/or restoring their clients' physical, functional, and neurocognitive abilities. A recently proposed bundle of practices for the intensive care unit could advance the c

Evidence-based guidance for community management of lower limb haematomas in the absence of national standards.

Haematoma management in community settings presents a clinical challenge because of the absence of standardised national guidance. Haematomas, defined as localised collections of clotted or partially clotted blood within tissues, can result in complications such as skin necrosis, infection and delayed healing if not managed appropriately. This article outlines the assessment and management of closed, open-bleeding and open-clotted haematomas, with emphasis on timely escalation and risk identification, based on the haematoma clinical decision guide designed by the author to address hesitation a

Colorectal cancer screening: Using evidence-based guidelines.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in men and women. There are multiple options for prevention and early detection. Evidence-based guidelines are available to select the best option based on personal and family history. The practice-based small group learning approach: making evidence-based practice come alive for learners.

This paper reports the study of a pilot learning programme for the Continuing Professional Development of Practice Nurses (PNs) in Scotland. Two PN groups used the practice-based small group (PBSG) approach to learning, which is designed to encourage learning relevant to patient problems faced in day-to-day practice. Learners kept a log of their experiences of engaging in PBSG learning for three consecutive meetings. Data was also collected through interviews. The findings detail the motivation for joining the PBSGs, group dynamics and the development of cohesion, factors influencing participa

Sexual health care provision in cancer nursing care: A systematic review on the state of evidence and deriving international competencies chart for cancer nurses.

BACKGROUND: Sexual health care should be an integral part of holistic, person-centred care for patients with cancer. Nurses can have a pivotal role, but nurse-led care in this context has been historically challenging. OBJECTIVES: To update the state of scientific knowledge pertinent to nurses' competencies in delivering sexual health care to patients with cancer; better understand moderating factors; and evaluate interventions developed/tested to enhance nurses' competencies. DESIGN: Systematic literature review in line with published PRISMA Statement guidelines. DATA SOURCES: Electronic b

Finding the Best Evidence to Support Care of Students With Chronic Conditions: CLUE #2: Acquire.

Every day, school nurses make practice decisions that impact the care provided to school children. Our professional standards require that we stay up to date with best practice options, yet there is neither time nor money to attend a continuing education offering for every practice concern we encounter. Learning how to acquire the evidence that leads to best practice can ensure our practice is current and that our students have the best chance to have positive health and academic outcomes. This article explains where to find good evidence and how to access it.
