The authors report on their experience using cortical somatosensorially evoked potentials in 23 studies on 21 patients. The method is used intraoperatively when the spinal cord is at risk, for early identification of functional damage to the cord. The potentials found are classified according type of manifestation and compared with the results obtained by other authors.

Data characterizing visual evoked potentials in neuralgia of the trigeminal nerve are presented. In contrast to healthy individuals, patients with this kind of neuralgia displayed a well pronounced character of early and late components of evoked potentials not only in the occipital but also in the central regions. Other features characteristic of their potentials were a hypersynchronous post-discharge and the presence of peaks. All these findings suggest the resemblance between the central mechanisms of neuralgia of the trigeminal nerve and those of epilepsy.

A method for recording pattern reversal evoked potentials (PREPs) from awake restrained rats has been developed. The procedure of Onofrj et al. [26] was modified to eliminate the need for anesthetic, thereby avoiding possible interactions of the anesthetic with other manipulations of interest. Rats were restrained in a harness and placed in front of a pattern generating TV screen displaying a black and white alternating square wave grating. Using various stimulation and recording parameters, normative data are presented from 141 adult male Long-Evans hooded and 11 adult male Sprague-Dawley alb

We have devised a technique to measure trigeminal somatosensory evoked potentials, stimulating the mentalis nerve at the mandibular foramen and recording the evoked early potential on the scalp at 3.2 msec. The early potential was easily recognized in all normal subjects and on the asymptomatic side of patients with facial pain. The latency of the early potential in normals was 1 to 2 msec less than half the latency of the mechanically induced jaw jerk. The early potential appeared simultaneously on both sides after stimulation of either the right or left mentalis nerve and may have its origin

Cervical somatosensory evoked potentials elicited by median nerve stimulation were recorded from 18 cases of hereditary spastic paraplegia. Motor and sensory nerve conduction in the median nerve was normal in each. In one third of the patients no spinal evoked potential was detectable. In the remainder the amplitude of the evoked potential was reduced in comparison with a control series; the latency was not significantly different. These changes suggest that a selective degeneration of the centrally directed axons derived from the dorsal root ganglion cells occurs in this disorder. The finding

Cortical-evoked potentials (CEPs) induced by the stimulation of the tibial nerve, were investigated in 16 patients with localized myelopathy, and in five patients with generalised myelopathy, and compared with the results obtained in 30 healthy test subjects. The investigations show that the pulses that give rise to the CEP, are conducted mainly by the posterior columns. Damage to the ventrolateral tracts, in contrast, leads only to a reduction in the amplitude of the CEPs. If account is taken of possible artefacts and misinterpretations, the method described is highly suitable for determining

We studied 80 patients with definite, probable, or possible multiple sclerosis, using visual and somatosensory evoked cortical potentials as indicators of manifest or silent plaques. The findings were related to the intracerebral production of immunoglobulin G expressed by the CSF IgG index. Combining the results of evoked potentials and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) findings, the patients were reclassified. Eight of 18 patients with clinically probable multiple sclerosis were then deemed definite, and 17 of the 42 possible cases were deemed probable. No relation was found between the presumed num

Visual evoked potentials elicited by reversing grating patterns were recorded in 35 patients with Parkinson's disease and in 26 controls. The average latency of evoked potentials in patients with Parkinson's disease exceeded by two standard deviations the average of the age-matched control group of other neurological patients. Over two-thirds of all patients with Parkinson's disease had abnormal latency. In these patients latency did not correlate with age. In 5 patients the latency became less prolonged on levodopa therapy, suggesting that catecholaminergic pathways have either indirect or di

OBJECTIVE: Giant somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) are observed in patients with cortical myoclonus. Short-latency components (SLC), are regarded as evoked epileptic activities or paroxysmal depolarization shifts (PDSs). This study aimed to reveal the electrophysiological significance of the middle-latency component (MLC) P50 of the SEPs.
METHODS: Twenty-two patients with cortical myoclonus having giant SEPs (patient group) and 15 healthy controls were included in this study. Waveform changes in SEPs before and after perampanel (PER) treatment were evaluated in the patient group. The wid

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP), cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP), and brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) response characteristics and to understand the pathophysiology of vestibular dysfunction in female migraineurs with vertigo symptoms. We also aimed to assess the electrophysiological diagnostic significance of the VEMP responses in vestibular migraine (VM).
METHODS: 23 patients with migraine without aura (MoA), 23 patients with VM, and 20 sex-and age-matched healthy co

In patients in coma due to severe CNS depressant drug overdose the central somatosensory conduction time (CCT) after median nerve stimulation is prolonged and N20 is dispersed. Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials demonstrate delayed interpeak latencies (IPLs) I-III, III-V and I-V. This was observed in 4 out of 5 patients investigated after intake of an overdose of amitriptyline (2 cases), barbiturates, meprobamate and nitrazepam (one case each). Toxic levels of drug overdose were related to prolonged CCT and IPLs, whereas normal CCT and IPLs were found at therapeutic drug plasma levels. CCT,

Motor-evoked potential (MEP) monitoring by transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) is important for intraoperative motor function assessment in neurosurgery; however, false-negative results sometimes occur, and these findings should be interpreted with caution. Herein, we report an interesting MEP change resulting from a pons transection. The patient was a boy aged 5 years and 2 months. He underwent multiple craniotomies for cerebellar anaplastic ependymoma and was already paralyzed in the right upper and lower limbs. Therefore, we decided to remove the recurrent lesion from the left anterio

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is a comprehensive analysis of the parameters of exogenous evoked potentials (visual, brainstem auditory, and somatosensory) in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG), a prototype of both neuromuscular junction disease and autoimmune disease. The study also seeks to isolate electrophysiological changes that may indicate disorders within the central and/or peripheral nervous system.
METHODS: A total of forty-two consecutive patients with myasthenia gravis (24 women, 18 men) were included in the study. All of the patients underwent EP examination. MR images wer

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSDs) are rare antibody-mediated disorders of the central nervous system, with a predilection for the spinal cord and optic nerves. The clinical utility of evoked potential recordings (EPs) has already been established for multiple sclerosis, in particular, that of the abnormal visual evoked potentials (VEP), a key criterion in the McDonald diagnostic criteria for MS. However, there have been few reports on EPs in patients with NMOSD.
AIM: The aim of our study was to assess the possible involvement of the optical pathway through VEP respo

OBJECTIVE: Brainstem cavernous malformations (CMs) often require resection due to their aggressive natural history causing hemorrhage and progressive neurological deficits. The authors report a novel intraoperative neuromonitoring technique of direct brainstem somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) for functional mapping intended to help guide surgery and subsequently prevent and minimize postoperative sensory deficits.
METHODS: Between 2013 and 2019 at the Stanford University Hospital, intraoperative direct brainstem stimulation of primary somatosensory pathways was attempted in 11 patients
