[Transanal resection of colon for Hirschsprung's disease].

BACKGROUND: Traditional surgical management of Hirschsprung's disease consists of a three-stage approach including proximal colostomy, definitive pull-through resection at one year of age and closure of the stoma shortly after the pull-through. At our institution, patients with this disorder have been operated with a one-stage transanal technique without laparotomy and colostomy since 2001. The early results of this procedure are presented in the article. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Complications and postoperative bowel function have been recorded after the introduction of the one-stage transanal t

Children with self-injurious behavior.

Self-injurious behavior is a serious problem that is not uncommon among individuals with mental retardation. Medical and developmental characteristics of 97 children, adolescents, and young adults (age range 11 months to 21 years, 11 months) assessed and treated for self-injurious behavior in a specialized, interdisciplinary inpatient unit between 1980 and 1988 were reviewed. This population differed from those reported in previous studies in that it was of school age and predominantly community based. Severe or profound mental retardation was present in 82.5% of our patients. The causative di

Dermorexia (Cosmeticorexia): A Narrative Review of the Emerging Phenomenon of Obsessive Skincare Behavior in the Digital Age.

The increasing use of visual social media has intensified societal pressure to achieve flawless skin and may contribute to excessive preoccupation with appearance and skincare. The emerging terms dermorexia and cosmeticorexia have been used to describe potentially compulsive skincare behaviors extending beyond conventional self-care. This narrative review examines the proposed concept of dermorexia, its conceptual overlap with recognized psychiatric conditions, potential risk factors and clinical manifestations, dermatological and psychological consequences, and implications for aesthetic prac

Self-Injurious Behavior Secondary to Cytomegalovirus-Induced Neuropathy in an SIV-Infected Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta).

A 3.5-y-old, female rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) inoculated with SIVmac239 presented 8 mo later for inappetence and facial bruising. Physical examination revealed a superficial skin abrasion below the left eye, bruising below the left brow, and epistaxis of the left nostril. There were no significant findings on CBC, serum chemistry, urinalysis, or radiographs. Differential diagnoses included infectious etiologies, self-injurious behavior, immune-mediated dermatitis, and neoplasia. Lack of response to antibiotic and analgesic therapy and observations of the macaque made it apparent that the

Gsdma3 mutation causes bulge stem cell depletion and alopecia mediated by skin inflammation.

Primary cicatricial alopecias (PCAs) are a group of permanent hair loss disorders, of which the pathogenesis is still poorly understood. The alopecia and excoriation (AE) mouse strain is a dominant mutant generated from ethyl nitrosourea mutagenesis. AE mice exhibit a progressive alopecia phenotype similar to that seen in PCAs, resulting from a point mutation in the gasdermin A3 gene. Mutant mice begin to show alopecia on the head from postnatal day 22 and experience complete hair loss by the age of 6 months, along with hyperkeratosis and catagen delay. The results of a histological examinatio

Quantitative evaluation of atopic blepharitis by scoring of eyelid conditions and measuring the water content of the skin and evaporation from the eyelid surface.

PURPOSE: To quantitatively evaluate the condition of the eyelid skin of patients with atopic blepharitis, their symptoms were scored and the water content of the skin and evaporation from the skin were measured. METHODS: Forty patients with atopic blepharitis were examined. The condition of eyelid skin (erythema, edema/papulation/oozing/crust, excoriation/lichenification) was scored from 0 to 3 points. Water content and water evaporation were measured with a Moisture Checker and an evaporimeter, respectively. Eleven age-matched volunteers without atopic disorders were recruited as normal cont

The acute idiopathic photodermatoses.

The acute idiopathic photodermatoses are more common in females and comprise polymorphic light eruption, actinic prurigo, hydroa vacciniforme, and solar urticaria. Polymorphic light eruption occurs considerably more frequently than the others and while precise pathogenic mechanisms are still unclear, increasing evidence suggests an immunological basis for this condition. Although clinically distinct, actinic prurigo may be a variant of polymorphic light eruption, whereas solar urticaria and possibly hydroa vacciniforme are distinct entities, the former representing a type I hypersensitivity re

A New Moisturiser Improves DNCB-induced Atopic Dermatitis-like Symptoms and Restores Skin Barrier Function in BALB/c Mice.

INTRODUCTION: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disorder with eczematous and pruritic lesions. Topical moisturisers and either topical corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors are usually recommended. Restoring the skin barrier function alleviates AD symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of a new moisturiser compared to commercially available products in an AD murine model. METHODS: Experimental AD was induced with topical applications of 2,4-DiNitroChloroBenzene (DNCB) on the shaved back skin of BALB/c mice from Day 1 to Day 38. Mice were randomized to either V

Beyond the Scalp: Bilateral Hand Trichoteiromania Revealed by Trichoscopy - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Trichoteiromania is a friction-induced hair shaft disorder caused by repetitive rubbing/scratching and is often considered the hair shaft expression of lichen simplex chronicus ("scratching-pseudo-alopecia"). It is classically described on the scalp and presents with lichenified plaques and characteristic trichoscopy such as broom hairs and V-hairs. Pruritus or an urge to rub is common and may help distinguish it from trichotillomania (hair pulling), which is often asymptomatic. To date, the condition has been described almost exclusively as a scalp disorder. CASE PRESENTATION:

Psychosis in a Military Veteran in the Context of Hallucinogen Use: A Case Report.

N, N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a potent hallucinogenic compound with increasing recreational use despite limited safety data. While DMT use has been linked to psychosis, delusional parasitosis as a specific manifestation remains unreported. We present a novel case of a 60-year-old female veteran with chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a history of major depressive disorder, past marijuana use, and no history of prior psychiatric hospitalizations, who developed persistent delusions of parasitic infestation following prolonged recreational intravenous (IV) DMT. She was referred to

Impulsivity in body-focused repetitive behavior disorders: Disparate clinical associations between three distinct measures.

OBJECTIVE: Research on trichotillomania (TTM) and excoriation (skin-picking) disorder (SPD) has suggested that impulsivity may be an important cognitive underpinning of the behavior, but many studies have produced mixed results. This analysis assessed impulsivity in TTM and SPD using three measures: the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS), the Eysenck Impulsiveness Questionnaire (EIQ), and the Stop-Signal Task (SST). METHODS: Two hundred and eighty three subjects with TTM or SPD completed measurement of impulsivity as a part of participation in several research studies. Subjects scoring one sta

A Rare Case of Benign Recurrent Intrahepatic Cholestasis Initially Diagnosed in Middle-age.

BACKGROUND: Repeated episodes of jaundice and pruritus are common in a group of autosomal recessive liver diseases known as benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis. Benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis (BRIC) is divided into two types, type 1 and type 2, and is caused by mutations in the ATP8B1 and ABCB11 genes. Here, we report a rare case of BRIC type 2 mutation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old Chinese man had three frequent episodes of jaundice marked by extensive excoriation and severe pruritis, although he had no prior history of jaundice. Laboratory investigations showed no evide

A systematic review of N-acetylcysteine for treatment of acne vulgaris and acne-related associations and consequences: Focus on clinical studies.

Acne vulgaris is one of the most common dermatologic disorders affects people of all races and ethnicities and has many adverse effects on the quality of life. The increased bacterial resistance to antibiotics has reduced the effectiveness of treatment with these agents. There is an increasing focus on the involvement of oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of acne. This study investigates the effect of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) as an antioxidant in the treatment of acne vulgaris. This systematic review was conducted through a search in databases such as Science Direct, PubMed, Scielo, and Med

[Genitoanal pruritus].

BACKGROUND: Genitoanal pruritus is usually characterized by intense pruritus in the genital area, possibly also extending to the anal and gluteal regions. Besides pruritus, other sensations such as burning, stinging, heat sensations and pain may occur. Genital pruritus may be associated with specific skin lesions of dermatoses such as eczema, lichen sclerosus or others. The skin is often without pathological findings, but one should be alert to transient erythemas, fetor and excretions in the genital area. Caused by intense scratching, secondary lesions such as papules, excoriations and crusts
