Exploring the lived experience of physical and mental illness using a hermeneutic phenomenological framework.

Despite common co-morbidity of physical and mental health conditions, they remain analytically separated. Using a hermeneutic phenomenological framework, we investigate bodily and emotional dimensions of the lived experience of physical and mental illness. The existential lifeworld framework of van Manen is used to interpret experientially based meaning-making through embodied encounters with physical illness. Ten individuals with long-term physical health conditions were interviewed. Existential lifeworlds intertwined across themes and lived-body took central position within embodied experien

Demoralization and Associated Factors in Palliative Oncology Outpatients: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Demoralization is common in palliative psycho-oncology settings. Although its relationship with other psycho-existential conditions has been scrutinized, its co-occurrence with adjustment disorder, as measured by the Adjustment Disorder New Module-20 (ADNM-20), remains unexamined. AIM: Estimate frequency and co-occurrence of demoralization and adjustment disorder symptom domains among palliative outpatients and examine sociodemographic and psycho-existential factors. METHODS: A single-site, cross-sectional survey at an academic cancer center used self-reported web-based screening

Differences in life attitudes between general population and hospitalized psychosomatic patients: a comparative cross-sectional study.

To compare the extent to which value-based life attitudes measured by means of the Life Attitude Profile (LAP-R) could differ between the general population and people suffering from mental disorders hospitalized in a psychosomatic ward. Cross-sectional comparative study between a sample of general population (n = 409) and a sample of unselected patients (n = 147) at admission in a psychosomatic ward. Comparisons were carried out by means of Cronbach's alpha, correlation matrix, t-tests, robust multivariate linear regression models (MLRM), and using propensity scores. The internal consistency

Looking for Peace When Life Fades-Informal Caregivers' Lived Experiences During Caregiving Leave: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: In Denmark, informal caregivers can receive a Municipal Care Allowance to provide end-of-life care at home. While this policy acknowledges the value of caregiving, little is known about how it shapes caregivers' lived experiences and support needs during caregiving leave. AIM: This study explores the lived experiences of informal caregivers during caregiving leave, with a focus on existential, emotional, and relational dimensions. METHOD: Inspired by Reflective Lifeworld Research (RLR), seven narrative interviews were conducted with caregivers who had provided end-of-life care at

Use and evaluation of psychological interventions in specialist palliative care settings: results of a national online survey with psychologists and psycho-oncologists.

BACKGROUND: Psychologists play a key role as part of the multiprofessional palliative care team. Meaning-, dignity-centred and existential intervention approaches are designed to preserve dignity, strengthen the sense of meaning and alleviate existential distress at the end of life. However, little is known about psychological interventions used in caring for palliative patients and their relatives. This study aims to describe which psychological interventions are used in palliative care, and to what extent professional experience (years working as a psychologist/psycho-oncologist in a palliat

A dominance analysis on the relationship between schizotypy and loneliness type.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated how individual differences in schizotypy differentially predicted types of loneliness - direct, social, emotional, and existential loneliness (in relationships and meaninglessness in life). METHODS: We presented participants with the brief version of the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences and the de Jong Giervald loneliness scale and used dominance analysis to evaluate the dominant predictors of schizotypy on loneliness. We also evaluated the impact of depression on each model. RESULTS: In our preregistered analysis we found evidence to

Deep Brain Stimulation, Authenticity and Value.

Deep brain stimulation has been of considerable interest to bioethicists, in large part because of the effects that the intervention can occasionally have on central features of the recipient's personality. These effects raise questions regarding the philosophical concept of authenticity. In this article, we expand on our earlier work on the concept of authenticity in the context of deep brain stimulation by developing a diachronic, value-based account of authenticity. Our account draws on both existentialist and essentialist approaches to authenticity, and Laura Waddell Ekstrom's coherentist

Friends' Experiences of Bereavement Following a Drug-Related Death: A Qualitative Study.

Introduction: Friendship bereavement is under-recognised, and grief following a drug-related death may be compounded by stigma and limited social validation. This study examines how bereaved friends understand and experience grief, focusing on how relational dynamics, social context, and existential concerns shape bereavement. Methods: We undertook a qualitative study embedded in a Norwegian project on drug-related death bereavement. Fourteen bereaved friends (8 men, 6 women; 21-54 years) completed semi-structured interviews. Data were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, de-identified, and a

Ghanaian women's experiences of unsuccessful in-vitro fertilisation treatment, unravelling their meanings: a Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Women having experienced infertility over a period usually decide on an option for an invitro fertilisation treatment (IVF). However, in the quest to seek help and to be part of motherhood, they sometimes become unsuccessful in their fertility journey. The researchers aimed to explore the meanings and emotions attached to infertility and unsuccessful invitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment among Ghanaian women, as this area of inquiry is less explored in Africa and specifically in the Ghanaian context. METHODS: The study followed a qualitative approach and drew inspiration from the

Suffering, justice, and scarcity: philosophical reflections on the burden of cancer in LMICS using Nigeria as a case study.

Cancer represents a significant and growing public health emergency in Nigeria, where high mortality rates, late-stage presentation, inadequate infrastructure, prohibitive costs and pervasive stigma combine to produce a multidimensional crisis. While epidemiological data and health system analysis illuminate the scale of the problem, they fail to capture the deeper ethical, structural and existential realities that shape the lived experience of cancer. This paper employs key philosophical concepts, including distributive justice, social justice, structural violence, biopolitics, epistemic inju

Perceived social support and resilient mindset among Chinese undergraduates: the chain mediating roles of self-efficacy and meaning in life.

OBJECTIVE: Grounded in Second Wave Positive Psychology (PP2.0), this study conceptualizes resilient mindset as a positive cognitive schema associated with the internalization of external relational and existential resources, rather than merely a static adaptive outcome. It examines how perceived social support is associated with resilient mindset among undergraduates through a sequential mechanism involving self-efficacy and meaning in life, thereby examining the proposed pathway from social resources to resilient cognition. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was employed with 764 undergraduat

Stereotypes of nihilists are overwhelmingly negative.

Existential nihilism is on the rise in modern societies, but no previous work has investigated the social psychology of seeing no meaning in life. In the current research, five studies (N = 1,634) show that targets' existential nihilist beliefs elicit a range of negative stereotypes about personality traits, commonly valued social traits, and targets' ability to perform basic adaptive social tasks. Results demonstrate that these negative stereotypes are mediated by belief that the target is depressed more than the belief the target is non-religious or that the target does not plan for the futu

Development and cultural adaptation of the HOPE spiritual assessment tool to Swedish (HOPE-SE): Expert evaluation in specialized palliative care.

OBJECTIVES: The HOPE spiritual assessment tool (HOPE tool), developed by Anandarajah and Hight, is a clinician-administered tool used to support the identification of patients' existential, spiritual, and religious concerns. In Sweden, a foundational translation exists, but a culturally adapted version suited to a secular and multicultural context is lacking. This study aimed to develop a culturally adapted Swedish version (HOPE-SE) and assess its comprehensibility (face validity) and perceived relevance and coverage (content validity) among specialized palliative care professionals. METHODS:

Enabling Recovery Following Peer-Perpetrated Sexual Violence: Lived Experiences of Young Women in Sweden.

INTRODUCTION: Peer-perpetrated sexual violence is very common in young adult relationships. In Sweden, one in four young women has experienced sexual violence, and it is a leading cause of mental health issues among young women today. Knowledge about how recovery is enabled for young women with experience of peer-perpetrated sexual violence remains limited. The primary emphasis of caring is to support health and well-being and to contribute to recovery; therefore, understanding the meaning of how recovery is enabled is essential when caring for these young women. AIM: The aim of this study is

Adaptation before and one year after liver transplantation: a longitudinal grounded theory study.

INTRODUCTION: Liver transplant recipients undergo emotional, social and existential changes. Adaptation begins before surgery and continues long after discharge. However, no longitudinal grounded theory study has described this process across the transplantation trajectory. This study explored how individuals adapted by addressing their main concerns. METHODS: Twelve adults (mean age 49.3 years, range 25-70) were interviewed pre- and post-transplantation. Data collection and analysis proceeded concurrently using Charmaz's constructivist grounded theory and the constant comparative method. RE

Spiritual Intelligence: A Scoping Review with Concept Analysis on the Key to Spiritual Care.

This study explores the concept of spiritual intelligence from an evolutionary perspective, providing a comprehensive and updated definition. A concept analysis was conducted following Rodgers' Evolutionary Method, supported by a scoping review in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. Studies explicitly addressing spiritual intelligence, regardless of population, setting, or discipline, were included across quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, and review designs. Four databases-PsycINFO, PubMed Central, Scopus, and Web of Science-were searched for publications up to 15

Existing evidence for the use of psychedelics in patients with cancer and other serious illness: A narrative review.

OBJECTIVES: Mood disorders and existential distress impact those with cancer or a serious illness at higher rates than the general population. There have been limited pharmacological advances in recent years, and available psychological interventions vary in degree of impact and durability as a treatment modality in this population. A recent renaissance in psychedelic research has suggested that this class of medications might offer an alternative treatment model for anxiety, depression, and existential and psychological distress that often accompanies the diagnosis of a serious illness. Relationship between Psychopathology and Sources of Meaning in Psychotherapeutically Treated Patients: A Naturalistic Cross-Sectional Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The experience of meaning seems to be crucial for psychic well-being. In the literature, there are reports of relationships between personality, illness, and life meanings. The objective of this study was to investigate types of experiences of meaning (meaningfulness, crisis of meaning, existential indifference) and their associations with some psychopathological categories in a clinical population. METHODS: In a naturalistic and cross-sectional design, 56 German patients in outpatient psychotherapy (29 women, 27 men; mean age = 42.8 years, standard deviation = 13.8) were assess
