Deep-sea megafauna co-opts microbial energy metabolism genes to withstand ultra-long starvation.

The deep-sea supergiant isopod is renowned for surviving over 5 years without food, which is a crucial adaptive trait for megafauna inhabiting extreme environments. Here, morphological, physiological, and genomic comparisons of deep-sea isopods reveal a dual adaptive strategy underlying this trait: a distended, food-retentive stomach that enables episodic hyperphagia and a markedly reduced basal metabolic rate (BMR). Notably, central to this adaptation is the ancient horizontal acquisition of the microbial energy metabolism-related gene ND1, which thereafter achieved significant dosage enhance

Spallation of polycarbonate on nanosecond timescales.

Polycarbonate is commonly used in extreme environments, particularly in applications involving high-velocity impact. A critical failure mode in high-velocity impact is that of spallation, where intersecting release waves result in the dynamic fracture of the material under high-rate tension. Despite the ubiquity of polycarbonate, major gaps exist in our understanding of its behavior at high rates over very short timescales. Here we investigate the spallation of polycarbonate on nanosecond timescales at strain rates of ∼10^{6}s^{-1} through a data set of 117 spall experiments. The size and fide

Confinement-Induced Enhancement of Parallel Dielectric Permittivity: Super Permittivity Under Extreme Confinement.

Enhancement of parallel (x-y plane) dielectric permittivity of confined fluids has been shown previously. However, a theoretical model that explains this enhancement is lacking thus far. In this study, using statistical-mechanical theories and molecular dynamics simulations, we show an explicit relation between the parallel dielectric permittivity, density variations, and dipolar correlations for protic and aprotic fluids confined in slit-like channels. We analyze the importance of dipolar correlations on enhancement of parallel dielectric permittivity inside large channels and extreme confine

Collagen-like sequences encoded by extremophilic and extremotolerant bacteria.

Collagens and collagen-like proteins are found in a wide range of organisms. The common feature of these proteins is a triple helix fold, requiring a characteristic pattern of amino acid sequences, composed of Gly-X-Y tripeptide repeats. Collagen-like proteins from bacteria are heterogeneous in terms of length and amino acid composition of their collagenous sequences. However, different bacteria live in different environments, some at extreme temperatures and conditions. This study explores the occurrence of collagen-like sequences in the genomes of different extreme condition-adapted bacteria

A Weak-Aggregation Electrolyte Enables Lithium-Ion Capacitors at Ultra-Low Temperature.

The operation of low-earth orbit satellites, Antarctic research stations, and certain extreme cold environments demands energy storage devices (ESDs) capable of functioning at -100°C or lower. Conventional electrolytes are limited by sluggish ion transport and unstable electrode-electrolyte interphases at low temperatures, severely degrading the performance of electrochemical ESDs under extreme cold. Herein, we report a weak-aggregation (AGG-w) electrolyte reconciling bulk-phase ion transport with interfacial kinetics at ultra-low temperatures (ULT). This is achieved through the strategic inco

Molecular Challenges and Opportunities in Climate Change-Induced Kidney Diseases.

As temperatures continue to modify due to weather changes, more regions are being exposed to extreme heat and cold. Physiological distress due to low and high temperatures can affect the heart, blood vessels, liver, and especially, the kidneys. Dehydration causes impaired cell function and heat itself triggers cellular stress. The decline in circulating plasma volume by sweat, which stresses the renal and cardiovascular systems, has been related to some molecules that are crucial players in preventing or provoking cellular damage. Hypovolemia and blood redistribution to cutaneous blood vessels

Maternal and early-life area-level characteristics and childhood adiposity: A systematic review.

There is a cross-sectional evidence that physical and social environments are linked to childhood adiposity. Evidence is scarce for the role of preconception, pregnancy, and early-life area-level characteristics in shaping childhood adiposity. We aimed to systematically review evidence for associations between physical and social environmental conditions experienced in these periods and childhood adiposity. Published literature was identified from the CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO databases. Longitudinal studies linking an area-level environmental exposure in the preconception, pregnan

Threshold and nonlinear responses of vegetation productivity to extreme precipitation in Tajikistan.

Extreme precipitation strongly influences vegetation productivity in water-limited ecosystems, yet how different precipitation extremes regulate productivity, and whether these relationships vary across mountainous environments, remain poorly understood. Here, we combined the CASA model with an XGBoost-SHAP interpretability framework to quantify the associations between extreme precipitation characteristics and net primary productivity (NPP) across the arid mountain ecosystems of Tajikistan. Extreme precipitation exhibited pronounced spatial heterogeneity, with wet-extreme hotspots concentrate

Genomic Insights into Cold Adaptation and Demographic History of Amur-Heilong River Basin Populations.

Human adaptation to extreme cold has been studied predominantly in Arctic populations, leaving the genetic basis of cold resilience in non-Arctic high-latitude regions insufficiently understood. The Amur-Heilong River Basin (AR) in Northeast Asia represents one of the coldest inhabited regions in East Asia, yet its long-term resident populations remain underexplored at the genomic level. Here, we compiled high-coverage whole-genome sequences for 78 individuals representing three indigenous AR populations (Daur, Evenki, and Oroqen) to investigate their demographic history and genetic adaptation

Thermal Evolution of Silicon and Fluorine Species in Fluorosilane-Modified Carbon Aerogel Composites.

Carbon aerogels are widely used for thermal protection in extreme high-temperature environments under inert atmospheres because of their excellent thermal insulation. However, their high specific surface area and open-pore structure promote moisture uptake, necessitating hydrophobic or low-surface-energy functionalization for practical use. Existing studies have primarily focused on room-temperature wettability after modification, while the high-temperature decomposition of functional layers, elemental evolution, and volatile release remain insufficiently understood. Herein, vapor-phase fluoro

Cryogenic Viscoelasticity of a C22-Tailed Amine Oxide across an Extremely Broad pH Range.

Sustaining viscoelasticity of surfactant solutions at subzero temperatures and across extreme pH regimes remains challenging, as freezing and harsh acidic or alkaline environments inhibit aggregate growth and retard structural relaxation. This study examines microstructural evolution and rheological response of C22-tailed amine oxide (C22AO) in a 50/50 (v/v) ethylene glycol-water mixture spanning pH 2.0-13.0 and 20 °C to -20 °C. Potentiometric titration identifies an apparent pKa at 6.8, with ζ-potential declining from +18.53 mV (pH 2.0) to +2.35 mV (pH 6.8) and -1.66 mV (pH 13.0). All formula

Effects of simulated microgravity on biological features and virulence of the fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans.

Cryptococcus neoformans is a fungal pathogen that causes cryptococcal meningitis, mainly in immunocompromised individuals, such as those with HIV. Its recent detection on the International Space Station raises concerns about potential health risks in space, where immune systems may be compromised. However, its behavior in space-like conditions remains unclear. In this study, we examined the effects of simulated microgravity on C. neoformans. We found that the condition enhanced the fungus's resistance to membrane and osmotic stress and increased key virulence factors, including capsule formati

Brain morphometry and chronic inflammation in Bangladeshi children growing up in extreme poverty.

Over three hundred million children live in environments of extreme poverty, and the biological and psychosocial hazards endemic to these environments often expose these children to infection, disease, and inflammatory responses. Chronic inflammation in early childhood has been associated with diminished cognitive outcomes, and despite this established relationship, the mechanisms explaining how inflammation affects brain development are not well known. Importantly, the prevalence of chronic inflammation in areas of extreme poverty raises the possibility that it may also serve as a mechanism e

Rapid Gelation of Anti-Swelling, Self-Healing, and Biocompatible PEG Hydrogels Based on CBT-Cys Click Reaction under Mild Conditions.

Hydrogels, essential biomaterials in bioengineering, face challenges of undesirable swelling in applications requiring stable dimensions. This study presents a novel anti-swelling hydrogel using a cyanobenzothiazole (CBT)-cysteine (Cys) click reaction, inspired by luciferin chemistry. By functionalizing 4-Arm PEG with CBT and synthesizing N-terminal cysteine-terminated ethylenediamine precursors, gels are formed under mild conditions, avoiding harsh reagents or catalysts and ensuring compatibility with physiological environments. The resulting hydrogels benefit from enhanced cross-linking dens

Lignin degradation by a novel thermophilic and alkaline yellow laccase from Chitinophaga sp.

UNLABELLED: Laccases (EC 1.10.3.2) are oxidoreductases that belong to the multicopper oxidase subfamily and are classified as yellow/white or blue according to their absorption spectrum. Yellow laccases are more useful for industrial processes since they oxidize nonphenolic compounds in the absence of a redox mediator and stand out for being more stable and functional under extreme conditions. This study aimed to characterize a new laccase that was predicted to be present in the genome of Chitinophaga sp. CB10 - Lac_CB10. Lac_CB10, with a molecular mass of 100.06 kDa, was purified and characte

The Role of Lung Ultrasound in Low-Resource Settings During the Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) Pandemic.

Lung ultrasound (LUS) has proven to be a helpful diagnostic tool for evaluating lung involvement in respiratory pathologies. The usage of this imaging technique became even more widespread during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The latest generation ultrasound scanners are conveniently portable and this permits ultrasound examinations to be performed even in extreme environments where no other diagnostic tool is available. Our team has developed the first guide that assists the clinician while operating in low-resource settings, in managing a SARS-CoV-2 patient based on the clinical examination and t

Heat stroke: a review.

Heat stroke is a complex clinical picture caused by extreme elevation of body temperature and is especially prevalent in hot climates. The danger of heat stroke has apparently always accompanied unacclimatized man on his way through arid zones, and was often the cause of man's fatal adventures in the desert. Large numbers of unacclimatized urban dwellers have suffered when the urban areas have been involved in heat waves. Heat stroke has also been a major problem in hot industrial environments. This paper is a review of pertinent literature on this subject.

Improving thermal shock resistance of segmented thermoelectric devices via metal foam integration.

Thermal shock failure restricts the long-term reliable operation of high-performance segmented thermoelectric devices in extreme environments such as space exploration. Taking the skutterudite-Bi2Te3 segmented thermoelectric leg as an example, here we show that thermal shock failure originates from thermal stress concentration caused by the thermal expansion mismatch between the solder and thermoelectric materials. To address this, we design a Ni foam composite solder layer, the network of which constrains the solder matrix, reducing its effective thermal expansion, while absorbing strain ener
