[Facial nerve-sublingual nerve parallel bridge anastomosis for facial nerve injury caused by closed temporal bone fractures].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of facial nerve-sublingual nerve parallel bridge anastomosis for facial nerve injury resulting from closed temporal bone fractures. METHODS: Between January 2017 and December 2019, 9 patients with facial nerve injury resulting from closed temporal bone fracture caused by head and face trauma were treated. Among them, 5 patients were treated with facial nerve-sublingual nerve parallel bridge anastomosis (operation group), and 4 patients were treated with neurotrophic drugs combined with rehabilitation exercise (conservative group). There was no signi

[Strategies for facial nerve protection and management in temporal bone cholesteatoma surgery].

Temporal bone cholesteatoma is a common invasive lesion affecting the temporal bone, leading to a series of extracranial and intracranial complications, with facial nerve paralysis being one. The treatment of temporal bone cholesteatoma typically requires surgical resection to prevent its complications. The article discusses the preservation of the facial nerve during temporal bone cholesteatoma surgery, the management of intraoperative facial nerve injury, and the treatment of cholesteatoma-associated facial paralysis.

[Facial skin fistula as a postoperative complication of a mandibular guided bone regeneration].

Bone resorption is a consequence of the loss of a tooth. Alveolar ridge resorption can restrict the volume of bone available for the positioning of a dental implant. Bone graft is a routinely performed procedure in order to increase this volume and provide an adequate situation for the replacement of the tooth. However, autogenous bone is the gold standard for this procedure, xenogenous bone is a good alternative. It presents reliable results and a low complication rate. In this article, we describe the case of an infection resulting in a facial skin fistula following a guided bone regeneratio

Prevalence of facial canal dehiscence and other bone defects by computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: The facial nerve is the most vulnerable structure during otological surgeries. Facial canal dehiscence (FCD) is the main risk factor for iatrogenic injuries. Its prevalence in clinical studies ranges between 6 and 33.3%, while anatomical studies report 25-57%. The objective was to determine the prevalence of FCD stratified by age and gender in a healthy population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Temporal bones from high-resolution computed tomography (CT) were analyzed. Patients with a history of trauma or tumors of the temporal bone, cholesteatomas, chronic middle ear disease, and any

Dissecting Aneurysm of the Internal Carotid Artery as a Complication of Facial Bone Trauma.

The involvement of the internal carotid artery in dissecting aneurysm is rarely reported in the literature and may occur as a complication of trauma, surgery, and other medical conditions. We report a case of a 22-year-old male who was involved in a motor vehicle accident with associated multiple orthopedic and maxillofacial fractures. During surgical management, the patient was incidentally diagnosed with a dissecting aneurysm involving the right internal carotid artery.

Risk of Ischemic Stroke After a Facial Bone Fracture in Elderly Patients.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic stroke is a major disease in our aging society, and the incidence of facial bone fractures among the elderly has increased. However, there have been few studies evaluating stroke after facial bone fractures. The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency and risk of stroke after facial bone fractures. METHODS: This study included patients 65 years or older with a diagnosis of facial bone fracture (study group) and patients who had previously undergone plastic surgery procedures such as mass excisions or cosmetic surgery (control group) from 2006 to 2015. We ev

Intraosseous venous malformations of the facial bone: a retrospective study in 11 patients.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinical symptoms, computed tomography (CT) features and treatments of intraosseous venous malformations (IVM) that occur in the facial bone. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eleven patients with facial IVM were treated with two surgical techniques, excision (n = 4) or curettage (n = 7). No recurrence was encountered at follow-up (45.8 ± 16.0 months). Postoperative deformities were left in two paediatric patients who were treated with excision. CONCLUSIONS: The diagnosis of IVM can be difficult and is mainly based on clinical symptoms and CT features. IVM should be differe

Facial reconstruction with a bone-anchored prosthesis following destructive cancer surgery.

Reconstruction of craniofacial defects following cancer surgery may be performed using several techniques and materials. This case report describes surgery for a large tumor, as well as the rehabilitation process which involved a craniofacial prosthesis covering the whole defect of the anterior brain, orbit, mid-face and hard palate. The results suggest that a craniofacial prosthesis anchored on titanium implants is a viable alternative as a retention system, and also a good alternative to other reconstructive surgeries.

A review of intraoperative airway management for midface facial bone fracture patients.

In craniofacial trauma patients, oral route endotracheal intubation may thwart the accuracy of dental occlusion and nasotracheal intubation carries the risk of intracranial invasion in skull base fracture cases. Between November 2005 and June 2006, patients receiving facial bone fracture operations at Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital were enrolled in this study. Intraoperatively, the endotracheal tube was pushed to either the retromolar space or the missing tooth space and secured by two 4.0 silk stitches. Then, surgeons could perform the usual procedure to explore the fracture sites, che

Temporal bone rhabdomyosarcoma presenting as acute peripheral facial nerve paralysis.

Facial palsy is not an uncommon presentation to an emergency department. Whereas most patients will ultimately receive a diagnosis of Bell palsy (idiopathic peripheral seventh cranial nerve palsy), a subset will have an identifiable cause for their facial paralysis. Children are more likely to have an identifiable cause than are adults. We present a case in which a child presented with acute peripheral facial nerve palsy and was found to have temporal bone rhabdomyosarcoma. The key clinical finding was the presence of both 7th and 12th cranial nerve palsy.

Retention of asymptomatic bone plates used for orthognathic surgery and facial fractures.

Over the past three decades there has been an improvement in biomaterials that has virtually replaced the use of stainless steel with titanium and its alloys. Based on the possibility of causing corrosion, toxicity, hypersensitivity, and stress protection, stainless steel should not be considered as a permanent implant in maxillofacial fixation. However, because of their superior corrosion resistance, noncarcinogenicity, hyposensitivity, nontoxicity, and excellent tissue compatibility, titanium and Ti-6Al-4V may be retained as permanent implants in maxillofacial fixation. The stress protection

Clinical experiences with patients with facial bone deformities associated with hemifacial microsomia.

Eighteen adult patients with hemifacial microsomia were treated with a combination of skeletal and augmentation surgery. Three typical cases are presented. In principle, skeletal and augmentation surgery have recently been performed in combination in a single stage. Groin flaps and scapular or scapular ostocutaneous flaps have mainly been employed for augmentation surgery.

The fallopian canal and facial nerve in sclerosteosis of the temporal bone: a histopathologic study.

Sclerosteosis is an uncommon subtype of osteopetrosis that is frequently associated with recurrent facial nerve palsy. Because of the need for detailed measurements of the fallopian canal and facial nerve in this disease, a study was carried out using a new method of surface area measurement. The results show narrowing of the fallopian canal and facial nerve in the labyrinthine, distal tympanic and mastoid segments. Maximum surface area loss occurred in the labyrinthine segment for both the canal and nerve. In addition, bony occlusion of the stylomastoid artery was found. From these findings w

Osteosynthesis in facial bone fractures using miniplates: clinical and experimental studies.

Miniplates were used in the treatment of 66 patients with facial bone fractures. Follow-up (mean, 12 months) disclosed that complications occurred only in cases of mandibular fracture: there were five instances of wound dehiscence, two of infection, and two of occlusal disharmony. Loading tests on the mandibles of dogs which had undergone segmental resection showed that a dynamic compression plate gives rigid fixation, although this appeared to be due to the rigidity of the thick plate itself, rather than the compressive force. When mandibular continuity was restored with a graft, the miniplat

Temporal bone pathology in congenital anomalies of the oval window and the facial nerve.

Temporal bones of six infants with congenital ear anomalies were examined for abnormalities of the oval window and facial nerve. These temporal bones were classified into two groups according to the degree of malformation: group A, those with atresia or absence of the oval window; and, group B, those with hypoplasia of the stapes and annular ligament. Group A, consisting of five ears, were associated with severe middle ear anomalies such as the abnormal course of the facial nerve and absence of the stapes. In group B, consisting of seven ears, the stapes were present and the facial nerve prese
