Barriers to advancement in academic surgery: views of senior residents and early career faculty.

BACKGROUND: A significant faculty attrition rate exists in academic surgery. The authors hypothesized that senior residents and early-career faculty members have different perceptions of advancement barriers in academic surgery. METHODS: A modified version of the Career Barriers Inventory-Revised was administered electronically to surgical residents and early-career surgical faculty members at 8 academic medical centers. RESULTS: Residents identified a lack of mentorship as a career barrier about half as often as faculty members. Residents were twice as likely as faculty members to view chil

Seroprevalence of Coxiella burnetii antibodies among students of the Faculty of Medicine in Kosice (Slovakia).

Titers of immunoglobulin IgG against phases I and II of Coxiella burnetii were determined in 241 students of the Faculty of Medicine by ELISA method and the respective risk factors were evaluated, e.g., rural and urban life, consumption of milk, contact with animals and gender, which may be associated with exposure to C. burnetii. Phase I antibodies (Abs) were detected in 59 serum samples (24.4 %) at antibody level of 1: 100-1: 400. Phase II Abs were found in 179 persons (74.2 %). The titers were in the range of 1: 100-1: 1600. The titer > or =1: 800 of IgG was used as a cut-off level, and was

Digit ratio and faculty membership: implications for the relationship between prenatal testosterone and academia.

Digit ratio (length of index finger divided by length of ring finger) is an index of exposure to prenatal testosterone. Prenatal testosterone slows the growth rate of the left side of the brain while enhancing growth of the right side. Right hemisphere processing is associated with better visual-spatial and mathematical abilities, as is digit ratio. Thus, traditional sex differences in visual-spatial and mathematical abilities can be attributed to differences in exposure to prenatal testosterone, indexed by a sex dimorphic pattern in digit ratio (female=1.00, male=0.98 for UK samples). Additio

[Primary care and alcohol use disorders: evaluation of a faculty-development program in Venezuela].

OBJECTIVE: Primary care offers an opportunity to identify and treat persons who drink alcohol above permissible levels. In order to prepare primary care practitioners around the world to prevent and treat alcohol-related problems, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the United States of America has developed and tested a model international program for educating physicians about such problems. The model was designed to increase the clinical, teaching, and research skills of medical school faculty who work with medical students, residents, and primary care physicians. Vene

The development of psychiatric medicine at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine and evaluation of 889 psychiatric referrals.

A clinical analysis of the psychiatric referrals (N = 889) during 1989-1991 is presented. The most prevalent psychiatric syndromes seen in both inpatients and outpatients are compared with reference to those areas of psychopathology that are less frequently identified by nonpsychiatrist physicians. The distribution of psychiatric referrals according to the various clinics in order of frequency was as follows: internal medicine, surgery, dermatology, and neurology. The most frequent reasons for consultation requests were (in order of frequency) the referring physician's difficulty in making a d

Correlates of drinking and drug use by higher education faculty and staff: implications for prevention.

The prevalence and frequency of drug and alcohol abuse among higher education faculty and staff is not known. Higher education is a cultural environment which, on the one hand, is stressful and, on the other, permits a high degree of autonomy. This relationship of stress and autonomy is predicted to produce drug and alcohol abuse. Information is gathered by anonymous, self-report questionnaires, on the frequency and prevalence of faculty and staff drug and alcohol use at a regional university. Responses show alcohol and drug use within the last year and month among four higher education occupa

The current status of faculty staffing and resident training in emergency radiology. Results of a survey.

The results of a survey of United States and Canadian radiology residency programs in hospitals maintaining major emergency departments indicate that (1) radiologic faculty assignment to emergency medicine may include "all faculty," "specific faculty," "specific and other faculty," "general," and "musculoskeletal" faculty; (2) a chief of emergency radiology section is designated in less than 35% of radiology departments providing emergency room services; (3) radiology resident rotation in emergency radiology occurs in less than 2/3 of the surveyed programs; and (4) radiology resident experienc

Assessment in competency-based medical education for anesthesiology: validity evidence, equity, and faculty readiness.

Competency-based medical education (CBME) is driving a paradigm shift in anesthesiology graduate medical education, moving from fixed-duration training to assessment-centered models. This narrative review aims to synthesize the sources of validity evidence for existing assessment tools (milestones, entrustable professional activities, and workplace-based assessments), equity threats during evaluation and their intervention strategies, and the impact of faculty readiness on assessment quality. Informed by the Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles as a quality-appraisal instrumen

Annual Summative Feedback Letters are Associated With Improved End-of-Rotation Surgical Faculty Ratings.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that distributing annual summative feedback letters to surgical faculty is associated with increased end-of-rotation resident ratings of faculty. DESIGN: This is a retrospective study, during which we developed automated, reproducible methods for integrating several feedback elements into annual education letters addressed to each Department of Surgery faculty member. To compare end-of-rotation resident ratings of faculty before versus after the intervention, we obtained all evaluations of 80 faculty members completed by residents during a 5-year period. For

Building interoperability early: international faculty perspectives on multinational military medical education in undergraduate training.

INTRODUCTION: As military operations increasingly rely on coalition partnerships, interoperability has become a core competency for medical readiness. Traditionally emphasised in postgraduate or deployment settings, earlier integration of interoperability-focused training in undergraduate medical education (UME) may better prepare physicians for coalition environments. Simulation-based education (SBE) offers an effective platform for developing shared understanding, communication, and trust within multinational teams, with multinational faculty informing best practices in programme design and

A mouse-tracking study on visualization of panoramic radiographs among Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology faculty.

OBJECTIVES: Panoramic radiographs (PANs) are a commonly used dental imaging modality and are complex to evaluate. This study aimed to use mouse-tracking technology to identify the visualization characteristics of experienced Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology (OMR) faculty when reviewing PANs and to assess relationships with detection accuracy. METHODS: Seventeen OMR faculty in US dental schools with 5 to 38 years of experience were recruited. Participants were shown 17 PANs (5 "Normal" and 12 "Pathology") over Zoom and instructed to move their mouse cursor in sync with their eye movements. Data

The root coverage esthetic score: Intra-examiner reliability among dental students and dental faculty.

BACKGROUND: The root coverage esthetic score (RES) was published in 2009 as an esthetic scoring system to measure visible final outcomes of root coverage procedures performed on Miller I and II recession defects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the intra-examiner, intra-group, and inter-examiner reliability of the RES when used among periodontal faculty, post-graduate students in periodontology, and pre-doctoral DMD students when using the RES at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM). METHODS: Thirty-three participants (12 second-year DMD students, 11 periodontal residents,

Professional satisfaction experienced when caring for substance-abusing patients: faculty and resident physician perspectives.

This survey aimed to describe and compare resident and faculty physician satisfaction, attitudes, and practices regarding patients with addictions. Of 144 primary care physicians, 40% used formal screening tools; 24% asked patients' family history. Physicians were less likely (P <.05) to experience at least a moderate amount of professional satisfaction caring for patients with alcohol (32% of residents, 49% of faculty) or drug (residents 30%, faculty 31%) problems than when managing hypertension (residents 76%, faculty 79%). Interpersonal experience with addictions was common (85% of faculty,

An Innovative Model for Graduate Medical Education Faculty Development Through Physician-in-Training Delivery.

BACKGROUND: Faculty development is a core requirement for Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited residency programs. Successfully delivering content to faculty can be challenging. This pilot study aimed to assess expert-developed sessions delivered by resident physicians to faculty at the completion of their clinical rotations. METHODS: A prospective cohort project was conducted, involving precepting faculty and resident physicians in a dermatology residency program. Each resident, at the end of their rotation, delivered a faculty development program to their

Rethinking nursing faculty workforce economics: From single-income appointments to portfolio-based academic roles.

The United States nursing faculty shortage is commonly framed as a shortage of qualified educators caused by inadequate salaries. In 2025, nursing schools reported 1,588 full-time faculty vacancies and turned away 92,672 qualified applications from baccalaureate and graduate programs. This structured analytic essay argues that the nursing faculty shortage is also a labor-participation problem: terminally prepared nurses may be qualified for academic roles but unwilling to accept the compensation, workload, and professional constraints of faculty employment. Drawing on workforce data, research,

Workplace Incivility, Bullying, and Mental Health-Related Outcomes Among University Faculty: A Narrative Review.

University faculty, particularly in health-related disciplines, perform multiple roles in teaching, research, administration, and student support. Consequently, negative interpersonal behavior may have meaningful implications for well-being and retention. Workplace incivility involves low-intensity disrespect with ambiguous intent; workplace bullying or mobbing involves repeated negative acts over time, often with a power imbalance; and workplace cyberbullying occurs via electronic communication. We conducted a narrative review with a structured search and selection approach to summarize quant

Strategic vulnerability on mitigating malicious academic envy and enhancing institutional resilience in medical faculty.

Academic envy, particularly its malicious form, constitutes a silent epidemic that destabilizes medical faculty through counterproductive work behaviours and diminished psychological well-being. This review addresses the "zero-sum" culture inherent in competitive medical hierarchies by proposing Strategic Vulnerability as an institutional intervention. Strategic Vulnerability advocates structured sharing of navigated professional struggles by senior faculty. This is a mentoring strategy promoting competent humility, psychological safety, and benign rather than malicious envy. The proposed "Sca
