The authors describe a case of Lynch II type familial ovarian cancer syndrome. The family was first observed following the almost contemporary manifestation of ovarian cancer in two sisters. A subsequent analysis of family history among first and second degree relatives showed the presence of ovarian cancer in two maternal aunts, carcinoma of the colon in the father and breast cancer in a sister of the patients. Surgical treatment was selected for ovarian cancer associate with polychemotherapy in both cases. The patients' only living sister underwent preventive ovariectomy at the end of her re

A 24-year-old Beduin pregnant woman in her 22nd week of gestation was treated successfully by plasmaphereses and steroids as soon as the diagnosis of TTP was confirmed by the clinical and laboratory criteria needed. Her sister died due to complications of TTP in pregnancy five years earlier while her other sister recuperated from TTP during pregnancy. However, fetal loss ensued. Thus, family history in pregnant women presenting with toxemia of pregnancy--like--syndrome may be the first clue to familial TTP.

Three families with polycythemia inherited through apparently different modes are described. Secondary causes of polycythemia were ruled out. Erythropoietin (EPO) levels were normal or low, even after phlebotomy. In vitro erythroid colony growth in standard assay cultures containing EPO was normal; however, in the absence of added EPO, a few progenitors from most of the affected individuals were able to generate recognizable colonies of mature erythroblasts, although these were smaller and proportionately less numerous than seen in polycythemia vera (PV). To search for EPO-receptor changes as

Three female patients of two generations in one family each had patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) that was proved by echocardiography and cardiac catheterization. Two of them received surgical ligation of the PDA because of large left to right shunt (Qp/Qs of 3.8 and 2.7, respectively), while the third patient with a Qp/Qs of 1.2 was not operated. Although the exact cause of PDA in this family is unclear, an autosomal recessive inheritance is highly possible.

Familial benign chronic neutropenia is a rare anomaly which is transmitted as an autosomally dominant trait and is characterized by normal or somewhat low total leukocyte counts, consistent neutropenia, and, usually, relative monocytosis and lymphocytosis, sometimes with eosinophilia. Affected individuals have a normal life expectancy. Many are asymptomatic, but some have histories of tendency to develop furuncles and/or periodontal disease. A Danish family with familial benign chronic neutropenia is reported. Four family members were affected, of these one had repeated attacks of severe stoma

Four cases of familial ventricular tachycardia are presented. In each family the proband was an adolescent girl. Twelve members in the four families were affected and all were female. The clinical and electrocardiographic features were relatively constant within each family but there were striking differences between families. These differences argue against a common electrophysiological or pathophysiological basis for the ventricular tachycardia.

Of 625 patients with Bell's palsy, 26 from 25 families (4.0%) had a positive family history of Bell's palsy. Genealogic analysis of the families indicated the mode of inheritance of familial Bell's palsy possibly to be autosomal dominant inheritance with low penetration. The prognosis of familial Bell's palsy was generally favorable. Age, sex, recurrence, and inherited factors are discussed.

Numerous dimensions of family involvement are important for chronic illness management. A recently developed and validated typology of diabetes-specific family functioning organizes these dimensions into four meaningful types (Collaborative & Helpful, Critically Involved, Satisfied with Low Involvement, and Want More Involvement). These types represent patterns of associations across dimensions of family involvement and synthesize these multiple dimensions of functioning into usable categories. The current study had two primary aims: first, to use qualitative data to enhance the quantitative u

This Clinical Recommendation provides evidence-informed, person-centered, and equity-driven guidance to optimize medication abortion management via telemedicine in the US. Key recommendations include: We recommend telemedicine medication abortion with or without pre- or posttreatment testing as a safe option before 12 0/7 weeks of gestation. No-test telemedicine medication abortion (NTMA) and hybrid models are shown to be safe and effective (GRADE 1B). We recommend over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents as the first line for pain management for telemedicine medication abortion

In therapy, the child is mainly seen as a problem to be labeled or as a victim of various forms of abuse. The idea of the child as a therapeutic resource is the central point of my article where children's symptoms are quickly reframed and get a relational meaning in the family. Once the relational competence of the child is appreciated and his voice is heard, the child becomes a special guide to explore the emotional world of his family, and the genogram can provide a wonderful platform to start this therapeutic journey. Using a multigenerational lens, I describe how to explore family develop

Grounded in the family systems theory within the life course systems perspective, this study sought to investigate (a) long-term transmission processes of hostility from interparental relationships to parent-young adult relationships and (b) the mediational roles of parents' and adolescents' psychopathology in these long-term processes. Research has examined the long-term transmission of hostility from interparental relationships to young adults' relationships with their parents. However, less is known about how this transmission process differs for father-young adult and mother-young adult re

This study examined the relationship between variables about family members co-residing during the COVID-19 pandemic and anxiety about COVID-19, domestic violence from spouse, child abuse anxiety, internet addiction, and mental health as social problems related to the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 220 parents (70 male and 150 female, age; M = 41.6, SD = 34.4) were included in the analysis. Stepwise hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted with dependent variables of fear of COVID-19, spousal violence, anxiety regarding perpetrating child abuse, internet addiction, and mental hea

It is now well-established that essential tremor (ET) can manifest with different clinical presentations and progressions (i.e., upper limb tremor, head tremor, voice tremor, lower limb tremor, task- or position-specific tremor, or a combination of those). Common traits and overlaps are identifiable across these different subtypes of ET, including a slow rate of progression, a response to alcohol and a positive family history. At the same time, each of these manifestations are associated with specific demographic, clinical and treatment-response characteristics suggesting a family of diseases

BACKGROUND: There are no national guidelines for the management of patients with a family history consistent with Lynch syndrome (LS) but a negative genetic test. To determine current management practices, genetic counselors' (GCs) recommendations were assessed.
METHODS: A survey of GCs using five hypothetical pedigrees was posted to National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) discussion forums. Descriptive statistics were used.
RESULTS: One-hundred and fifteen surveys were completed. A pedigree with a first-degree relative (FDR) with early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) and a family histor

BACKGROUND: Although repetitive microtrauma and athletic overuse patterns are most commonly associated with osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), recent studies have identified a potential genetic predisposition for OCD. Several case series have documented family pedigrees that support autosomal-dominant inheritance, but the families in these studies were all selected as a result of unique histories that may not accurately represent OCD inheritance patterns at large. Because there has been little investigation beyond these case reports, we aimed to describe a broader, more representative pattern of

The present study used a longitudinal design to investigate whether parental values, interests, and the perceived level of expressiveness, cohesiveness and control in the family were associated with changes in psychiatric symptoms during early adolescence. We used data gathered at ages 12, 14 and 17 from 1,600 adolescent girls in the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Growth and Health Study. Using a novel approach we found significant informant effects of family cohesion on psychiatric symptoms, with stronger associations for adolescent ratings than parental ratings. Multivariate modell

Psychiatric family history of bipolar II disorder is understudied. The aims of the current study were to find the psychiatric family history of bipolar II patients using a new structured interview, the Family History Screen by Weissman et al (2000), and to find bipolar disorders family history predicting power for the diagnosis of bipolar II. One hundred sixty-four consecutive unipolar major depressive disorder (MDD) and 241 consecutive bipolar II major depressive episode (MDE) outpatients were interviewed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID). The Family History Screen was
