Malnutrition and starvation's possible adverse impacts on bone health and bone quality first came into the spotlight after the horrors of the Holocaust and the ghettos of World War II. Famine and food restrictions led to a mean caloric intake of 200-800 calories a day in the ghettos and concentration camps, resulting in catabolysis and starvation of the inhabitants and prisoners. Severely increased risks of fracture, poor bone mineral density, and decreased cortical strength were noted in several case series and descriptive reports addressing the medical issues of these individuals. A severe e

Adequate prenatal nutrition is essential for optimal brain development. There is a growing body of evidence from epidemiology linking exposure to nutritional deprivation and increased risk of schizophrenia. Based on studies from the Netherlands and China, those exposed to macronutrient deficiencies during famine have an increased risk of schizophrenia. With respect to micronutrients, we focus on 3 candidates where there is biological plausibility for a role in this disorder and at least 1 study of an association with schizophrenia. These nutrients include vitamin D, folic acid, and iron. While

Schizophrenia is a multifactorial disease with complex interactions between a genetic liability, possible perinatal complications and exposure to later environmental risk factors in childhood. Maternal influenza infection, wartime-famine-related denutrition and maternal depression or exposure to repeated stress in pregnancy may have a deleterious effect on brain development and neuronal migration. Obstetrical complications which are significantly associated with schizophrenia are bleeding, diabetes, prematurity, fetal growth retardation, Rhesus incompatibility, preeclampsia and congenital malf

This paper reviews the literature on obstetric complications (e.g. premature births and hypoxia at birth) and the later development of schizophrenia. Some forty studies and two meta-analyses are summarised concerning methods and results. The balance of evidence today supports an association between obstetric complications at different points of time: during foetal life, delivery, as well as during neonatal life. This is supported by other studies of early life risk factors, e.g. infections, maternal stress and famine. Presuming there is a causal relationship, the results may support the view t

Six surveys for protein-energy malnutrition were carried out in sequence in Bas-Zaire beginning at the end of 1978 at the estimated height of the famine and continuing throughout the recovery period. Utilizing a stratified multi-stage sampling technique, over 1000 children aged 6 months to 6 years were measured anthropometrically and examined for the presence or absence of bilateral pedal oedema in each survey. The proportions of children who were less than 80% of the reference median weight-for-height and who had oedema decreased, respectively, from 12.8% and 14.4% initially to 2.1% and 1.8%

Historically, adipose tissue was considered to be a passive storage vessel discharging nutrients in times of famine and accumulating fat in times of surfeit. This view changed with the identification of leptin as an adipocyte hormone. Leptin functions as an afferent signal in a negative feedback loop that regulates food intake and metabolism to maintain homeostatic control of adipose tissue mass. Before this, the existence of a system maintaining homeostatic control of energy balance was unclear. The identification of leptin has thus uncovered a new endocrine system that also links changes in

The prevalence of presumed vitamin A-related corneal scars among 5,589 preschool-age Haitian children ranged from 1.2 per 1,000 in the south, to almost 1% in the famine-afflicted north. These scars accounted for at least 45% of all corneal scars, and all bilateral corneal blindness encountered. Most lesions were acquired during the first three years of life. There was no variation by sex or ecology of the sample site. This country of 5.5 million inhabitants acquires 345 new surviving cases of vitamin A-related corneal destruction, over one fourth bilaterally blind, each year, although local op

The collapse of the Dzungar Khanate in the 1750s marked the end of the world's last nomadic empire and reshaped Eurasian geopolitics. However, whether environmental and societal factors interplayed and contributed to its collapse remains unclear. Here, we reconstructed steppe productivity variability across the Dzungar heartland since 1625 using 441 tree-ring series based on an extreme growth ratio. Our record shows that the Khanate's collapse coincided with the lowest steppe productivity in the past four centuries during 1751-1761. The weakening societal resilience approaching a tipping point

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most prevalent diseases worldwide. The glucose levels found in the blood of diabetic patients can be reflected in the saliva, which can favor biofilm growth and predispose denture wearers to oral candidiasis. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different salivary glucose concentrations on dual-species biofilms of Candida albicans and Streptococcus mutans. A 96-h biofilm was developed on acrylic resin specimens exposed to 'feast' (10% sucrose) and 'famine' periods. Biofilms were constantly exposed to salivary glucose concentrations equivalent to 0, 20, 60

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is widely practised among the Somali nomads in Eastern Ethiopia. It may be categorized as one of many harmful traditional practices such as uvula cutting, gum piercing, cauterization and blood letting, which are conducted by unskilled traditional healers in unhygienic conditions, and which potentially increase the risk of HIV transmission. Other factors also play a significant role in the perpetuation of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the region, such as lack of awareness, misconception about the routes of HIV transmission and ways of prevention, the practice of polyg

Traditionally, populations are considered "historical" when first written evidences appear. Cultural development with all it's features--agricultural innovations and as a consequence--population growth, social specialisation and stratification, and finally--urbanisation trigger new environmental conditions, among them also in epidemiological situation, that have the feedback effects on the population and the individual. At this time only qualitative evaluations on many of questions can be presented. This paper is an attempt to synthesize available data on the following specific topics related

Although the relationship between starvation and reduced resistance to infection has been suggested by historical accounts of famines and pestilence and by recent epidemiologic studies, the concept of nutritional deficiency causing impairment of immunocompetence is relatively recent. In PEM (protein-energy malnutrition), most of the host defence mechanisms are breached, especially manifested in reduced cell-mediated immunity. One plausible reason is the reduction in mature fully differentiated T lymphocytes. Recent immunological methods made it possible to analyze its precise mechanism and pro

Helper NLRs function as central nodes in plant immune networks. Upon activation, they oligomerize into inflammasome-like resistosomes to initiate immune signaling, yet the dynamics of resistosome assembly remain poorly understood. Here, we show that the virulence effector AVRcap1b from the Irish potato famine pathogen Phytophthora infestans suppresses immune activation by directly engaging oligomerization intermediates of the tomato helper NLR SlNRC3. Cryo-EM structures of SlNRC3 in AVRcap1b-bound and unbound states reveal that AVRcap1b bridges multiple protomers, stabilizing a stalled interme

Fermented wastes rich in reduced compounds challenge anaerobic purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB) systems by causing redox imbalances. This study evaluated polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) production and CO2 fixation by PPB mixed cultures as means to balance internal redox, under four inorganic carbon (IC) availability conditions in a sequencing batch reactor. Culture selection under permanent IC presence promoted higher microbial diversity, but, strongly dependent on IC to balance internal redox, even when more oxidized substrates were supplemented. Increasing IC limitation favoured Rhodopseudomon

The gut microbiome functions as a hidden organ, providing essential ecosystem services to sustain human health. By identifying stably connected bacteria, we reveal two competing guilds (TCG) as the resilient core of the microbiome: the health-promoting foundation guild (FG) and the proinflammatory pathobiont guild (PG). FG members produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), enhancing gut barrier integrity and systemic resilience, while PG members disrupt metabolism through endotoxins, indoles, and hydrogen sulfide. Together, the FG and PG mediate ∼85% of ecological interactions in a dynamic, sees

This study evaluated the influence of carbon sources on alginate-like exopolymers (ALE) and tryptophan (Trp) biosynthesis in the aerobic granular sludge (AGS). With acetate, the highest biopolymers levels, per gram of volatile suspended solids (VSS) (418.7 mgALE∙g-1 and 4.1 mgTrp∙gVSS-1), were found likely due to biomass loss throughout the operation, which resulted in lower sludge age (4-7 days) and shorter famine period. During granulation, encouraging results on ALE production were obtained with propionate (>250 mgALE∙gVSS-1), significantly higher than those found with glycerol, glucose, an

The term 'scurvy' for the disease resulting from prolonged vitamin C deficiency had origins in 'scorbutus' (Latin), 'scorbut' (French), and 'Skorbut' (German). Scurvy was a common problem in the world's navies and is estimated to have affected 2 million sailors. In 1747, James Lind conducted a trial of six different treatments for 12 sailors with scurvy: only oranges and lemons were effective in treating scurvy. Scurvy also occurred on land, as many cases occurred with the 'great potato famine' in Ireland in 1845. Many animals, unlike humans, can synthesize their own vitamin C. Axel Holst and

Suboptimal maternal nutritional status has been implicated in the development of cardiovascular risk in the child. Initially inferred from studies of low-birthweight children, investigations in cohorts of women subjected to famine provide direct evidence for an independent influence of the mother's diet on the cardiovascular health of her child. Animal studies from rodents and sheep have shown associations between maternal undernutrition and raised blood pressure, as well as abnormalities in resistance artery function, particularly in endothelium-dependent responses. Early life exposure to the

Excessive fermentation-derived effluent NH4 constrains the sustainable application of the sludge fermentation-driven denitrification (SFD) process. This study introduced iron-rich residual sludge and an iron "feast-famine" strategy into a 38.00 m3 pilot-scale SFD process. After 120 days, the sludge reduction and denitrification efficiencies reached 77.79 % and ∼ 95.00 %, respectively, with a fourfold increase in NH4+ removal. Further analysis revealed that iron limitation stimulated biofilm sludge (BS) to assimilate Fe(III), increasing Feammox contribution by 5.43-fold. The generated Fe(II) sp

Genome-based data is helping to reveal the diverse strategies plants and algae use to maintain metal homeostasis. In addition to acquisition, distribution and storage of metals, acclimating to feast or famine can involve a wealth of genes that we are just now starting to understand. The fast-paced acquisition of genome-based data, however, is far outpacing our ability to experimentally characterize protein function. Computational genomic approaches are needed to fill the gap between what is known and unknown. To avoid misconstruing bioinformatically derived data, which is the root cause of the
