A Case Study of Severe Hypercalcemia Secondary to Subcutaneous Fat Necrosis: A Diagnosis of Exclusion.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) is a rare complication, usually occurring in otherwise healthy full-term infants who have experienced some level of trauma that causes ischemic injury to adipose tissue. Tissue injury usually occurs in areas of the body that are exposed to excessive pressure as during delivery. Tissue injury has also been described secondary to therapeutic cooling. This case study presents an infant who received whole body cooling for hypoxic ischemic injury and later developed severe hypercalcemia at one month of age without the skin lesions consistent with SCFN. The different

[A case of bone marrow necrosis and fat embolism in a sickle-cell disease patient].

We report here a case of bone marrow necrosis and fat embolism syndrome in a 23-year-old sickle-cell disease (HbSS) patient. A brutal and severe bicytopenia conducted to suspect bone marrow necrosis, confirmed by bone marrow aspiration and analysis. This was the first life-threatening medical event for this patient. In the present case, a complex alloimmunization against blood group antigens complicated the treatment because of the risks associated with the transfusion strategy. These rare complications of sickle-cell disease may be fatal, but an efficient symptomatic treatment generally allow

Hypocalcemia Associated with Subcutaneous Fat Necrosis of the Newborn: Case Report and Literature Review.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SCFNN) is a rare benign inflammatory disorder of the adipose tissue but may be complicated by hypercalcemia or less frequently, hypocalcemia, resulting in morbidity and mortality. Here we report the case of a neonate with subcutaneous fat necrosis who surprisingly developed hypocalcemia instead of hypercalcemia. A full-term female neonate was delivered by emergency cesarean section for fetal distress and was subsequently admitted to the Special Care Baby Unit. The mother's pregnancy was uncomplicated up to delivery. Her anthropometric measurements were

Subcutaneous Fat Necrosis of the Newborn With Initial Hypocalcemia and Familial Recurrence: A Case Report.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SFNN) is a rare disorder characterised by indurated plaques or nodules with or without erythema, typically distributed over the cheeks, extremities, posterior trunk, buttocks, and thighs, and appears during the first 2 weeks of life. It is commonly associated with perinatal asphyxia and, while usually self-limited, can lead to severe hypercalcemia. There is no known familial association. The present article describes a neonate with extensive disease, counterintuitive hypocalcemia, and a family history of SFNN and reviews the existing literature on SFNN

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn presenting as a large plaque with lobulated cystic areas.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SFN) usually occurs in the first few weeks of life in full-term infants and presents as indurated, distinct nodules with a predilection for the cheeks, shoulders, back, buttocks, and proximal extremities. Most cases are related to some form of fetal distress, including obstetric trauma. Some cases are associated with hypercalcemia. We report a case of SFN with an unusual clinical presentation, complicated by hypercalcemia.

Intraosseous fat necrosis simulating septic arthritis and osteomyelitis in a patient with chronic pancreatitis.

A woman with a 20-year history of alcohol abuse and chronic pancreatitis developed an osteoarticular involvement of her right ankle in association with subcutaneous nodules. Histopathological examination of the tissue samples obtained during surgical revision of the ankle showed necrotic fat and connective tissue. Microbiological cultures remained negative. The patient was administered long-term antimicrobial treatment without any apparent benefit. Four months later, she died of pancreatic insufficiency and pneumonia. Postmortem examination showed numerous foci of intra-abdominal fat necrosis.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis after paracentesis: Report of a case in a patient with acute pancreatitis.

A patient with acute pancreatitis developed subcutaneous fat necrosis of the anterior abdominal wall secondary to leakage of pancreatic enzymes through a rent in the peritoneum following paracentesis. The same patient also had another subcutaneous complication of pancreatitis, namely, nodular liquifying panniculitis of the lower extremities. The diagnosis was made by the typical histological findings of subcutaneous fat necrosis, foci of necrotic cells with a "ghost-like" appearance, and basophilic-staining calcium soaps deposited around the necrotic cells.

Bacteroides fragilis Abscess Associated With Fat Necrosis Following Breast Augmentation With Autologous Fat Grafting: A Case Report With Review of the Literature.

Autologous fat grafting (AFG) is a popular breast augmentation procedure characterized by high patient satisfaction and low complication rates. Infectious complications are uncommon with this technique, and gram-positive organisms are the predominant pathogens responsible for most cases. We report a rare case of abscess formation due to Bacteroides fragilis infection occurring in the setting of presumed fat necrosis following AFG, as indicated by ultrasound imaging and plastic surgery evaluation. A 52-year-old woman developed a postoperative infection after AFG and abdominal liposuction despit

Intraosseous Medullary Fat Necrosis on 99mTc-MDP Bone Scan of Patient With Acute Pancreatitis.

Pancreatic disease can be associated with polyarthritis and panniculitis in a small number of patients, and this triad constitutes PPP syndrome. Early diagnosis is critical as it has high morbidity and mortality. Panniculitis can occur in fat present anywhere in the body. Involvement of fat in bone marrow is relatively uncommon, and radiologic imaging shows osteolytic lesions involving long bones. Here we present a case of acute pancreatitis, referred to our department for evaluation of severe joint pain and multiple bone pain. Tc-MDP scan with SPECT/CT has been done, which showed medullary ex

Adipocytes and membranous fat necrosis within native cardiac valves: Clinicopathologic characterization of histologic constituents.

The constituents of normal cardiac valves as well as those involved by active and/or chronic processes have been detailed previously, however minor attention has been provided toward mature adipocytes within valves and correlation with other histologic, clinical, and echocardiographic data. The literature also contains a paucity of investigations examining the presence of a particular form of degenerative change of mature adipocytes termed membranous fat necrosis. We retrospectively reviewed the histologic findings of 1042 native cardiac valves which included identification of the presence of

Pancreaticoportal fistula and disseminated fat necrosis after revision of a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt.

A 59-year old man with alcohol related cirrhosis and portal hypertension was referred for transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) to treat his refractory ascites. Ten years later, two sequential TIPS revisions were performed for shunt stenosis and recurrent ascites. After these revisions, he returned with increased serum pancreatic enzyme levels and disseminated superficial fat necrosis; an iatrogenic pancreaticoportal vein fistula caused by disruption of the pancreatic duct was suspected. The bare area of the TIPS was subsequently lined with a covered stent-graft, and serum enzym

Extensive cardiac allograft vasculitis and concurrent fat necrosis 6 years after orthotopic heart transplantation.

Coronary artery vasculitis has been described as a rare lesion in the spectrum of transplant vasculopathy or as an extension of severe acute cellular rejection. We describe a patient, 6 years after orthotopic cardiac transplantation, who developed rapid heart failure and died despite aggressive treatment, minimal cardiac rejection (ISHLT Grade 1R), and no known transplant vasculopathy. Autopsy showed a diffuse and essentially complete necrotizing vasculitis of the entire coronary vasculature involving small, medium and large vessels, with extensive fat necrosis within the pericardial space. Atraumatic Breast Fat Necrosis Mimicking Malignancy in End-Stage Renal Disease: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Breast fat necrosis is a benign process in which fat undergoes aseptic saponification by blood and tissue lipase. It commonly occurs due to trauma or surgery and can mimic malignancy. We present an unusual case of atraumatic fat necrosis caused by extensive breast arterial calcifications in a woman with underlying diabetes mellitus and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). CASE REPORT A 61-year-old woman presented with a painful left breast lump for 3 days. Her medical history included hemodialysis-dependent ESRD, diabetic nephropathy, and poorly controlled tertiary hyperparathyroidism. I

Abdominal fat necrosis in a female dromedary camel: Clinical, hematobiochemical, sonographic, and pathologic findings.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal fat necrosis is mostly an incidental finding during rectal examination manifested by the presence of hard necrotic masses of different sizes. Differential diagnosis includes gastrointestinal neoplasia, abdominal abscessation and mummified fetuses. This report describes the clinical, hematological, biochemical, sonographic, and pathologic findings in a female Arabian camel (Camelus dromedaries) with abdominal fat necrosis. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 7-year-old female dromedary camel was presented for examination because of weakness and progressive weight loss since months ago. A
