Fate of pancreatic enzymes in the human intestinal lumen in health and pancreatic insufficiency.

The activities of pancreatic enzymes decrease during their passage from the duodenum to the terminal ileum, but degradation rates of individual enzymes are different. Whereas lipase activity is lost most rapidly, proteases and amylase are more stable. The mechanism by which lipase activity is destroyed is proteolysis, mainly by the action of chymotrypsin. This mechanism is also operative in patients with chronic exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. It explains why fat malabsorption develops earlier compared with protein or starch malabsorption. The substitution of lipase is also more difficult t

Anthropometric variables and metabolism in polycystic ovarian disease.

Anthropometric, endocrine and metabolic variables, were examined in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCO), and in normal control women. Obese women with PCO had higher plasma insulin values than non obese women with PCO, but lean body mass, glucose tolerance, plasma triglycerides and blood pressure were not different in spite of almost twice the body fat mass in the obese PCO women. However, in comparisons between non-obese PCO and control women, with equal body fat mass, the PCO women had higher blood pressure, plasma triglycerides and insulin, as well as a tendency to increased lean b

Association between body composition and frailty among prevalent hemodialysis patients: a US Renal Data System special study.

Studies of frailty among patients on hemodialysis have relied on definitions that substitute self-reported functioning for measures of physical performance and omit weight loss or substitute alternate criteria. We examined the association between body composition and a definition of frailty that includes measured physical performance and weight loss in a cross-sectional analysis of 638 adult patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis at 14 centers. Frailty was defined as having three of following characteristics: weight loss, weakness, exhaustion, low physical activity, and slow gait speed. W

Dietary profiles and associated metabolic risk factors in India from the ICMR-INDIAB survey-21.

Rapid dietary transitions in India have been associated with an alarming rise in cardiometabolic diseases. Using data from the national Indian Council of Medical Research-India Diabetes survey (18,090 adults), we examined India's dietary profile and the effect of isocaloric substitution of carbohydrates with other macronutrients on metabolic risk. Indian diets are characterized by high intakes of low-quality carbohydrates (white rice, milled whole grains and added sugar), high levels of saturated fat and low intakes of protein. Compared to those with the least carbohydrate intakes, those with

Liver Fat Scores Moderately Reflect Interventional Changes in Liver Fat Content by a Low-Fat Diet but Not by a Low-Carb Diet.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common metabolic disorder all over the world, mainly being associated with a sedentary lifestyle, adiposity, and nutrient imbalance. The increasing prevalence of NAFLD accommodates similar developments for type 2 diabetes and diabetes-related comorbidities and complications. Therefore, early detection of NAFLD is an utmost necessity. Potentially helpful tools for the prediction of NAFLD are liver fat indices. The fatty liver index (FLI) and the NAFLD-liver fat score (NAFLD-LFS) have been recently introduced for this aim. However, both

Effects of wheat bran and Olestra on objective measures of stool and subjective reports of GI symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of two nondigested, nonabsorbed dietary components on objective and subjective measures of gastrointestinal (GI) function. METHODS: A placebo-controlled parallel study compared the effects of wheat bran (20 g/day or 40 g/day in cereal), a well-known dietary fiber, with those of olestra (20 g or 40 g/day in potato chips), a nonabsorbed fat, on stool output, stool apparent viscosity (log peak force for extrusion [PF]), stool water content, and GI symptoms. Sixty subjects resided on a metabolic ward for 9 days: 3 days baseline and 6 day

Effect of nutritionally induced hyperlipidaemia on in vitro bovine embryo quality depends on the type of major fatty acid in the diet.

The present study examined whether the effects of dietary-induced hyperlipidaemia on preimplantation embryo development depend on the predominant fatty acid (FA) type in the diet. In a combined in vivo-in vitro bovine model, two groups of cows (n=3 in each group) were fed with three diets consecutively (4 weeks feeding for each): (1) a maintenance control diet (CONT); (2) a high-starch diet rich in saturated fat (SAT); and (3) a high-starch diet rich in omega-3 unsaturated fat (UNSAT). Two feeding sequences were used to test for carry-over effects: Group A was fed CONT, SAT1 and then UNSAT2, w

Molecular cloning of a ferret angiotensin II AT(1) receptor reveals the importance of position 163 for Losartan binding.

A complementary DNA for the angiotensin II (AngII) type 1 (AT(1)) receptor from Mustela putorius furo (ferret) was isolated from a ferret atria cDNA library. The cDNA encodes a protein (fAT(1)) of 359 amino acids having high homologies (93-99%) to other mammalian AT(1) receptor counterparts. When fAT(1) was expressed in COS-7 cells and photoaffinity labeled with the photoactive analogue (125)I-¿Sar(1), Bpa(8)AngII, a protein of 100 kDa was detected by autoradiography. The formation of this complex was specific since it was abolished in the presence of the AT(1) non-peptidic antagonist L-158,80

Effects of Myofibrillar Protein-Stabilized Soybean Oil Pre-Emulsions Containing Arabic Gum or Gallic Acid-Grafted Arabic Gum on the Quality Characteristics and Oxidative Stability of Reduced-Animal-Fat Emulsified Sausages.

Soybean oil-based pre-emulsions stabilized by myofibrillar protein (MP), Arabic gum (AG), or gallic acid-grafted Arabic gum (GA-AG) were used to partially (50%) or fully (100%) replace pork back fat in Western-style emulsified sausages. The present study investigated the effects of such replacement on the initial quality attributes and lipid oxidation stability of sausages during storage. Compared with sausages formulated with pure pork back fat, pre-emulsion substitution significantly reduced cooking loss and improved textural characteristics, especially hardness and springiness. A prospective discussion of past international nutrition catastrophes--indications for the future.

It is of interest that, aside from starvation, the nutrition catastrophes of the past, including scurvy (vitamin C deficiency) resulting from lack of fresh vegetables and fruit and beriberi (vitamin B1 deficiency) from consumption of polished rice, are forgotten and only of interest as history. The problems of vitamins were largely considered settled by the 1950s. With the appearance on the market of multiple-vitamin-and-mineral tablets, the public was also satisfied and considered the problem of deficiencies solved. Now we are faced with unexpected nutrition problems primarily in the industri

Take the bull by the horns and tackle the potential downsides of the ketogenic diet.

The ketogenic diet (KD) is a distinctive dietary regimen known for its low-carbohydrate and high-fat composition. Recently, it has garnered considerable interest from the scientific community and the general population because of its claimed efficacy in facilitating weight reduction, improving the management of glucose levels, and raising overall energy levels. The core principle of the KD is the substantial decrease in carbohydrate consumption, which is subsequently substituted by ingesting nourishing fats. While the KD has promising advantages and is gaining popularity, it must be acknowledg

Insulin resistance determines a differential response to changes in dietary fat modification on metabolic syndrome risk factors: the LIPGENE study.

BACKGROUND: Previous data support the benefits of reducing dietary saturated fatty acids (SFAs) on insulin resistance (IR) and other metabolic risk factors. However, whether the IR status of those suffering from metabolic syndrome (MetS) affects this response is not established. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine whether the degree of IR influences the effect of substituting high-saturated fatty acid (HSFA) diets by isoenergetic alterations in the quality and quantity of dietary fat on MetS risk factors. DESIGN: In this single-blind, parallel, controlled, dietary intervention study, M

Nutrition & health implications of palm oil in Indian diets.

To boost the edible oil production and attain self-sufficiency, one of the long-term strategies undertaken by the Indian government is promotion of palm oil production through oil palm cultivation. Compared to other traditional oils (except coconut oil) used in India, palm oil and palmolein have high saturated fatty acids and low linoleic acid levels. Studies conducted to evaluate the nutritional and health implications of substituting other oils with palmolein show that despite having low linoleic acid, the use of palm oil may not adversely affect the linoleic acid status of Indian population

Association of high-fat diet with bone mineral density in older U.S. adults: a cross-sectional study of NHANES 2017-2018.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on the relationship between dietary fat intake and bone mineral density (BMD) remains inconsistent, particularly regarding sex- and site-specific differences in femoral bone health among older adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to explore associations between dietary fat intake and femoral BMD in U.S. adults aged ≥ 50 years. Femoral BMD at four anatomical sites (total femur, neck, trochanter, intertrochanteric region) was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA

Rationale, Design and Participants Baseline Characteristics of a Crossover Randomized Controlled Trial of the Effect of Replacing SSBs with NSBs versus Water on Glucose Tolerance, Gut Microbiome and Cardiometabolic Risk in Overweight or Obese Adult SSB Consumer: Strategies to Oppose SUGARS with Non-Nutritive Sweeteners or Water (STOP Sugars NOW) Trial and Ectopic Fat Sub-Study.

BACKGROUND: Health authorities are near universal in their recommendation to replace sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) with water. Non-nutritive sweetened beverages (NSBs) are not as widely recommended as a replacement strategy due to a lack of established benefits and concerns they may induce glucose intolerance through changes in the gut microbiome. The STOP Sugars NOW trial aims to assess the effect of the substitution of NSBs (the "intended substitution") versus water (the "standard of care substitution") for SSBs on glucose tolerance and microbiota diversity. DESIGN AND METHODS: The STOP

Partial replacement of meat and fat with hydrated wheat fiber in beef burgers decreases caloric value without reducing the feeling of satiety after consumption.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different levels of hydrated wheat fiber replacing meat and fat in beef burgers on technological characteristics, sensory acceptance and hunger satisfaction. The different levels of hydrated wheat fiber (1 g fiber: 6 g water) were 0, 1.25, 2.5, 3.75 and 5.0 g of fiber/80 g burger portion. Results showed that the greater the addition of hydrated wheat fiber, the lower the protein (P < .0001) and lipid (P = .0006) content and consequently the greater the reduction in caloric value. Burgers with up to 3.75 g fiber/80 g portion showed the same (

Emulsion characteristics, chemical and textural properties of meat systems produced with double emulsions as beef fat replacers.

In recent years, double emulsions are stated to have a promising potential in low-fat food production, however, there are very few studies on their possible applications in meat matrices. We aimed to investigate the quality of beef emulsion systems in which beef fat was totally replaced by double emulsions (W1/O/W2) prepared with olive oil and sodium caseinate (SC) by two-step emulsification procedure. Incorporation of W1/O/W2 emulsion resulted in reduced lipid, increased protein content, and modified fatty acid composition. W1/O/W2 emulsion treatments had lower jelly and fat separation, highe

The regulation of adipose tissue distribution in humans.

The regulation of adipose tissue distribution is an important problem in view of the close epidemiological and metabolic associations between centralized fat accumulation and disease. With visceral fat accumulation multiple endocrine perturbations are found, including elevated cortisol and androgens in women, as well as low growth hormone (GH) and, in men, testosterone (T) secretion. These abnormalities probably derive from a hypersensitive hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis, with hyperinsulinemia related to a marked insulin resistance as a consequence. These hormonal changes exert profound ef
