Qualities of Children's Fear in Therapeutic Action Groups Addressing Post-separation Parental Stalking.

This paper examines the way in which parental stalking - as a form of domestic abuse - raises fear in children and affects their sense of safety. The study draws on three therapeutic action groups involving 13 children who have experienced stalking by their fathers/stepfathers after the parents' separation. The research question is as follows: How does children's sense of fear manifest in therapeutic action groups? The qualitative analysis revealed three qualities of fear among the children: (1) internalised, (2) constant and (3) episodic. Internalised fear appeared as a child's mental state t

Concealed concern: fathers' experiences of having a child with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

Despite increased research into families of chronically ill children, more needs to be known about the father's experience. We address this issue through asking: 'What is it like to be the father of a child with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis?' (JIA). Four members of eight families with an adolescent diagnosed with JIA, including seven fathers, were interviewed and transcripts analysed using grounded theory. This study suggests that fathers of children with JIA experience several severe losses which are exacerbated through comparisons they make between their own situation and that of fathers of

Physical child abuse in Sweden: a study of police reports between 1986 and 1996.

BACKGROUND: This study aims at investigating physical child abuse in Sweden during 1986-1996, a period when alarm was being raised about an increased number of police reports on physical child abuse. The study focuses on abuse committed by a parent or carer and aims at analyzing the victim and the perpetrator, family environment, injuries and judicial consequences of physical abuse. METHOD: All police reports on physical child abuse (0-14 years old) in a designated police district in Sweden during 1986-1996 were examined, as well as any judicial proceedings that followed. RESULTS: Our resear

Fostering the inclusion of teen fathers in adolescent health interventions: a call for structured and gender-inclusive programming.

Adolescent pregnancy remains a major global public health challenge, with significant consequences for health, education, and socioeconomic outcomes, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. While existing interventions have rightly prioritized adolescent mothers due to their biological and social vulnerabilities, this focus has inadvertently led to the systematic exclusion of teen fathers from adolescent health programming. Emerging evidence highlights that adolescent fathers play a critical role in maternal well-being, child development, and their own psychosocial outcomes. However,

Parents' personality and parenting stress in families of children with spina bifida.

BACKGROUND: Spina bifida (SB) can place parents at risk for increased levels of parenting stress. Little is known, however, about the role of parents' intrapersonal resources. Therefore, based on ideas of the Disability-Stress-Coping Model, relations between the severity of SB, parents' personality traits and parenting stress were examined. METHODS: Forty-six mothers and 37 fathers of children with SB (6-14 years) participated. Severity of SB (physical dysfunctions and cognitive functions), parental personality (Big Five) and parenting stress (Parenting Stress Index) were measured. Multiple r

Parents' PTSD symptoms and child abuse potential during the perinatal period: Direct associations and mediation via relationship conflict.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are associated with parental aggression towards children, but little is known about the relation between parents' PTSD symptoms and their risk for perpetrating child physical abuse during the early parenting years, when the potential for prevention of abuse may be highest. OBJECTIVE: To examine direct associations between mothers' and fathers' PTSD symptoms and child abuse potential, as well as indirect effects through couple relationship adjustment (i.e., conflict and love) in a high-risk sample of parents during the perinatal period,

Paternal psychopathological risk and psychological functioning in children with eating disorders and Disruptive Behavior Disorder.

Several studies demonstrated that maternal psychopathological risk is related to child's maladjustment, but until recently research has relatively neglected fathers. Disruptive Behavior Disorder (DBD) and Eating disorders (ED) have a large prevalence during childhood but a few studies have focused on their association with paternal psychopathological risk. One-hundred and thirty-nine children and their fathers were recruited from pediatric hospitals and outpatient clinics and paired with a healthy control group (CG). Fathers were administered the SCL-90/R and the CBCL 6-18 to assess: 1) psycho

Who Benefits More in Group-Based and Individual Telehealth Parenting Programs: Moderators and Distal Child Outcomes among Military Families.

Telehealth has emerged as a feasible means for delivering evidence-based parenting interventions, but studies of which families benefit from individual telehealth versus traditional in-person groups, as well as long-term effects for children, are lacking. In this comparative effectiveness trial, 166 military families were randomized to the individual telehealth or in-person group-based ADAPT intervention. Moderated mediation models tested whether baseline parent and child factors moderated the impact of delivery format on parenting at a one-year follow-up and whether parenting changes mediated

The father's role in the child's development of the capacity to cope with separation and loss.

Following a brief survey of the history and evolution of parental roles in Western society, early psychoanalytic concepts about the father's role are presented. Freud noted two opposing paternal images in the young boy's mind, namely how love for father and reverence for his power clash with hostility towards the father who is feared as a rival. Freud's personal family history, his self-analysis and the climate of his times led him to formulate the oedipus complex and to propose its role in personality development and pathology. After examining the earlier analytic formulations, more recent re

Perinatal Intervention Desires of New Fathers Who Have a History of Child Maltreatment: A Mixed Methods Study.

A history of child maltreatment (CM) can lead to poorer perinatal mental health and early parenting outcomes. New fathers who experienced CM may have unique needs that could be addressed with trauma-specific fatherhood programs. This sequential mixed-methods study compares the intervention desires of fathers with and without a history of CM, explores trauma-specific considerations for intervention development, and identifies barriers to participating in perinatal fatherhood programs. We surveyed 371 first-time fathers of young children (birth - 30 months) online. One third (33%, n = 123) had a

Association between paternal involvement in childcare and child injury: the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS).

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that paternal involvement in childcare for infants up to 6 months of age can prevent injuries in children up to 18 months of age. However, the relationship after 18 months of age has not been clearly established. Therefore, this study investigated the association between paternal involvement in childcare at 6 months of age and injuries in children between birth and 4 years of age. METHODS: This study analysed data from 72,343 children and mothers who participated in the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS). Seven items of paternal involv

Experiences of fatherhood among men who were sexually abused in childhood.

BACKGROUND: Fatherhood is a complex psychological process, which is shaped at a profound level by reflections on past childhood memories and parenting experienced in childhood. Fathers who were sexually abused in childhood may experience particular challenges for their fathering identity and parenting role. OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study explored the experiences of fatherhood for men who were sexually abused in childhood and how they perceived themselves in the fathering role. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Eleven participants were recruited to the study from three therapy services for adult s

Opportunities to Respond During Dyadic Caregiver-Child and Naturalistic Family Interactions Among Children With Down Syndrome: A Preliminary Investigation.

PURPOSE: Dyadic caregiver-child interactions are commonly used to examine children's language learning environments. However, children frequently interact with multiple caregivers and/or siblings if they come from homes with multiple caregivers and siblings. Thus, we examined if and how caregiver opportunities to respond (OTRs) varied when sampled across three interaction configurations. METHOD: Twelve children with Down syndrome (Mage = 40.82 months) and their biological parents participated in the current study. We collected separate mother-child and father-child dyadic interactions and one

Children's hostile intent attributions and emotional distress: What do parents perceive?

Traditionally, assessments of social information processing and associated emotional distress have used children's self-reports. We posit that additional informants, such as parents, may help illuminate the association between these variables and aggression. Our sample was composed of 222 dual-parent families of fourth-grade children (103 boys; 119 girls). Children responded to instrumental and relational provocations and their parents read the same scenarios and responded the way they believed their child would. Peer nominations provided aggression scores. We explored how means differed by pr

The impact on parents of a child's admission to intensive care: integration of qualitative findings from a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: In this study, parents were asked which aspects of their experience of having a child in intensive care had caused them the most distress and how they continued to be affected by these experiences. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY: Semi-structured interviews held with 32 mothers and 18 fathers of children admitted to a paediatric intensive care unit 8 months earlier, were audiotaped, transcribed and subjected to a thematic analysis. SETTING: The setting was an eight-bed paediatric intensive care unit in an inner city teaching hospital. RESULTS: Significant themes included the vividness of p

Father involvement in pregnancy and attachment to their baby: Depression and partner relationships in a sample of Black fathers.

Black fathers, particularly those who are low-income, unmarried, and from minoritized communities, face significant barriers to full participation in their children's lives. Prenatal challenges include scheduling conflicts, living arrangements, and relationship dynamics with the child's mother. These factors critically impact early paternal involvement and infant bonding. Despite the importance of father involvement, research on Black fathers' prenatal involvement and infant attachment remains limited. This study examines 75 Black fathers in the United States, investigating how relationship qu
