Neglected fathers: limitations in diagnostic and treatment resources for violent men.

In its examination of violent activity within the family, current literature assumes a "pecking order" exists: Larger and stronger family members attack those who are smaller and weaker. Adult males are usually studied as primary maltreaters of spouses, while females are considered mainly responsible for physically abusive behavior with children. Use of this perspective has led to neglect of male abusers, who injure half of the mistreated children in the United States. Through assessment of 66 studies of child abuse published during a 5-year period, this paper documents the lack of attention a

Psychiatric illness in fathers of men with bipolar primary affective disorder.

A systematic interview regarding family history was administered to 48 men with bipolar affective illness who were attending a lithium clinic. Several families were found in which both the patient and father had affective disorders, but the mother and maternal second-degree relatives were well. Of 30 men who had histories of hospitalization for mania, three had fathers with affective disorder (all bipolar). Of 18 men who had depression and hypomania, one father had unipolar depressive disorder. The hypothesis that bipolar manic-depressive illness may be transmitted by a single dominant genetic

Valproate Use by Fathers and Risk of Neurodevelopmental Disorders in Children.

BACKGROUND: There is concern about the increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) among offspring of fathers taking valproate within 90 days before conception. METHODS: Using nationwide databases from Norway and Taiwan, this cohort study examined associations between exposure to paternal valproate monotherapy during the 90 days preceding conception and incidence of NDDs among offspring after at least 6 years of follow-up. Pooled logistic regression analyses compared risks of NDDs among offspring whose fathers were treated versus not treated with valproate in the overall cohort (pop

The Lived Experiences of Fathers with Postpartum Depression: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Although parents may joyfully anticipate the birth of a child, it's impossible for them to know ahead of time just how profoundly their lives will change. Postpartum depression (PPD) can result. While there is a substantial body of research regarding maternal PPD, paternal PPD has received far less attention and is neither adequately understood nor diagnosed. This is exacerbated by outdated but persistent sociocultural masculinity norms and the stigmas around mental health issues. PURPOSE: This study sought to explore the lived experiences of new fathers with PPD in order to provi

Supporting Fathers in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: This scoping review explores the critical yet often overlooked role of fathers in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) environment, particularly during the emotionally tumultuous period following the birth of a critically ill infant. BACKGROUND: The birth of an infant significantly disrupts family dynamics and may impact the role of each parent. Fathers in the NICU are frequently overlooked, leading to feelings of isolation and stress. Fathers often face confusion, stress, and a sense of exclusion, which are compounded by the trauma of having a critically ill infant. DISCUSSION:

Living Arrangements and Intergenerational Support in Puerto Rico: Are Fathers Disadvantaged?

OBJECTIVES: To examine how intergenerational support varies by parents' living arrangements and whether there are gender differences in received support in Puerto Rico. METHODS: Data come from the 2006-2007 Puerto Rican Elderly and Health Conditions Project, a representative longitudinal study of adults aged 60 and older in Puerto Rico (n = 2,288). We examined the association between parents' living arrangements (alone, with spouse/partner only, with children) and their receipt of functional (help with errands/housework/transport) and health (help when sick) support from children, and whether

Fathers' Experience of Perinatal Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms: A Systematic Literature Review.

Perinatal Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (pOCD) refers to the onset/exacerbation of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) during the perinatal period. This disorder has been studied in mothers, with limited research conducted on fathers. The aim of the current study was to conduct the first systematic review of research investigating the experience of pOCD in fathers. A systematic review was conducted via electronic searches of Scopus, ProQuest, APA PsychNet, PubMed, and EBSCOhost. There were 523 articles identified and screened for eligibility, resulting in six eligible studies included in the f

NICU Fathers: Improving the Quality of Paternal Support in the NICU.

BACKGROUND: Parental support in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is critical; yet, the nursing staff may struggle to provide optimal support to NICU fathers. Generally, fathers are not viewed as equally competent caregivers when compared with mothers, and fathers often impart these beliefs on themselves. Increasing the nursing staff's knowledge and understanding of paternal support can change attitudes and foster positive behavior changes, enhancing the perception of support received by NICU fathers. PURPOSE: To implement a needs assessment and educational intervention for the nursing

Bidirectional Associations between Youth Adjustment and Mothers' and Fathers' Coparenting Conflict.

Research demonstrates significant associations between coparenting conflict and child adjustment problems. However, the implications of youth adjustment for coparenting, especially during youth's adolescence, remain poorly understood. Addressing several gaps in the literature, this study examines the longitudinal trajectory of mothers' and fathers' reported coparenting conflict from youth ages 10-17 and tests bidirectional associations between youth social anxiety, hostility, risk-taking behaviors, and mothers' and fathers' coparenting conflict. Participants include 757 mothers, fathers, and y

Prematurity-related knowledge among mothers and fathers of very preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: Empowering parents as health promoters may contribute to decrease the costs associated with prematurity. In Portugal, 8% and 1% of the births occurring in 2018 were preterm and very preterm, respectively. This study aimed to assess prematurity-related knowledge with regard to its prevalence, causes and consequences, according to sociodemographic, obstetric and offspring's characteristics, among mothers and fathers of very preterm infants. METHODS: Between May and July 2017, mothers and fathers of very preterm infants were invited to participate through the Portuguese association of

Predictors of change in mothers' and fathers' parent-child aggression risk.

Parents' cognitive schemas about parenting, personal vulnerabilities, and personal resources may affect their risk of engaging in parent-child aggression (PCA). This longitudinal study examined predictors of change in mothers' and fathers' PCA risk across the transition to parenthood, comparing trajectories of parents evidencing high versus low sociodemographic risk. Potential predictors involved parenting-relevant schemas (consistent with Social Information Processing theory, including approval of PCA, negative attributions of child behavior, and knowledge of nonphysical discipline options),

Fathers Count: The Impact of Paternal Risk Factors on Birth Outcomes.

Objective To determine the contribution of paternal factors to the risk of adverse birth outcomes. Methods This is a retrospective cross-sectional analysis using birth certificate data from 2004 to 2015 retrieved from the Finger Lakes Regional Perinatal Data System. Primiparous women with singleton pregnancies were analyzed in the study. Two multivariate logistic regression models were conducted to assess potential paternal risk factors including age, race/ethnicity, and education on four birth outcomes, including preterm birth (PTB), low birthweight (LBW), high birthweight (HBW), and small fo

Does fathers' and mothers' rumination predict emotional symptoms in their children?

OBJECTIVES: Although rumination can have a negative influence on the family environment and the quality of parent-child interactions, there is little research on the role of parental rumination in predicting adverse child outcomes over time. This longitudinal study examined whether mothers' and fathers' brooding rumination would each uniquely predict emotional symptoms in preschool children. METHODS: The initial sample consisted of 160 families (including 50 mothers with past depression, 33 fathers with past depression, and 7 fathers with current depression according to the Structural Clinica

Prenatal and early postnatal depression and child maltreatment among Japanese fathers.

We investigated the association of paternal depression in the prenatal and early postnatal period with child maltreatment tendency at two months postpartum among Japanese fathers. This population-based longitudinal study recruited Japanese perinatal women and their partners living in Nishio City, Aichi, Japan. Of the 270 fathers who participated, 196 were included in the analysis. All data were collected via self-administrated questionnaires at four time points: 20 weeks' gestation and in the first few days, one month, and two months postpartum. Paternal depression was assessed using the Edinb

Anxiety-promoting parenting behaviors: a comparison of anxious mothers and fathers.

The majority of research identifying anxiety-promoting parenting behaviors has been conducted with mothers, leaving a gap in current knowledge about the role of fathers' parenting behaviors. In an attempt to fill this gap, this study compared anxiety-promoting parenting behaviors of anxious mothers and fathers. Parents completed self-report measures of parenting behavior and independent coders rated parenting behaviors (i.e., overcontrol, granting of autonomy, warmth, hostility, anxious behavior) of mothers (n = 34) and fathers (n = 21) during a challenging parent-child interaction task (child

Do mothers and fathers hold similar views about their child's arthritis?

OBJECTIVE: Evaluations of the well-being of children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) typically rely on parents as proxy respondents. An assumption of several studies appears to be that mothers' and fathers' ratings are interchangeable, as reports do not always specify which parent completed the assessments nor, in repeated measures, whether they were completed by the same parent. The aim of this study was to examine the level of agreement between mothers' and fathers' ratings of their child's quality of life (QOL) and to identify possible predictors of disagreement. METHODS: Mothers

Personality dimensions and substance misuse: relationships in adolescents, mothers and fathers.

The research addressed the question of whether relationships exist between personality dimensions, antisocial behavior, and alcohol or other substance misuse (AOSM) in adolescents and in their fathers and mothers, who often also have histories of AOSM. One hundred male adolescents (mean age 15.8 years) entering a residential treatment center for youths with AOSM, their mothers (n = 88, mean age 39.4 years), their fathers (n = 36, mean age 44.9 years), and community controls (n = 100 adolescents, mean age 16.5 years; n = 96 mothers, mean age 43.8 years; n = 87 fathers, mean age 45.9 years) were

The "sins" of the fathers: self-healing squamous epithelioma in Scotland.

BACKGROUND: A review is presented of the recent progress made in mapping of the hereditary skin disease "Ferguson-Smith multiple self-healing squamous epithelioma." METHODS: The use of founder effects in an autosomal dominant disease is reviewed as applied to gene mapping efforts. RESULTS: A common haplotype among Scottish families segregating Ferguson-Smith disease allowed the narrowing of the candidate gene interval and the identification of several possible disease-associated genes. CONCLUSION: The gene for Ferguson-Smith multiple self-healing squamous epithelioma lies in a narrow region
